Sand is a combination element of Fuuton and Doton, meaning you must have those two elements to gain the Sunaton combined element as your third element.
All sand jutsu require a source of sand to be performed unless specified by the jutsu itself. Each jutsu requires a specific amount of sand, hereafter referred to as "Units".
One unit is equal to a single cubic foot. That is, a space one foot wide, one foot deep, and one foot tall. This amount is considered as being tightly packed sand, meaning it can actually cover much more space when loose.
Jutsu will not always conform perfectly to unit based measurements. A large jutsu may not require as many units as it might seem, and a small one may require more. This is not common, but can happen.
When in any area filled with sand, a shinobi is not required to supply or count units of sand, as it is assumed there is enough sand in the area to supply the user's needs.
There are several ways a sand user can transport the sand they need.
One, a sand gourd. These are available in the marketplace. Gourds specify how much sand they can hold.
Two, sand weights. These are basically sandstone, being sand packed solidly enough to be worn on the body. These are also available at the market, or may be made using sand compaction techniques. One unit of sand is equal to 100 pounds.
Three, storage seals. Storage seals have specified cubic storage spaces. These numbers are equal to units.

Only inorganic objects such as dirt and stone may be converted. The size of the object that may be transformed is dependent upon the user. Usual scaling rules apply. You can use at or below your level, but not above, and each rank costs chakra of that rank.

Dirt converts to sand at a rate of one cubic foot to one half unit. Stone, being very dense, breaks down at a 1:1 rate. One cubic foot to one unit. However, breaking down stone requires one rank higher payment than breaking down an equal amount of dirt.

Suna Shikaku [Sand Sight] Rank: D Type: Ninjutsu | Supplementary Element: Sand Units: 0 Description: Sand Sight is a technique that allows the user to “See” through sand. This is accomplished in two different ways. One way, is that of a sense of sorts. The user is able to feel people moving across or through the sand within their range, and even pinpoint their general location. The second way, is that of literal vision. The user is capable of peering into the sand itself, and seeing things below the surface. This can be used for anything from spotting people below, to finding caves hidden by the sand. The way this works, is that the user makes a single hand seal, sending a pulse of chakra outward from them. The chakra travels through the sand, bouncing off of other objects and returning, much like sonar. Once the signal returns, it forms together into a comprehensible image the user understands as sight. The technique also works well for seeing through sand in the air, such as sandstorms, making it invaluable for crossing the desert safely.
While the technique can be used to see through sand techniques, it only works against the user’s own techniques, with the exception of those that make sandstorms. In any other case, the opposing chakra in the sand will repel the chakra pulse, making it impossible to see through.
As the user’s rank grows, so too does their ability with this technique. D - 15 feet C - 25 feet B – 30 feet A - 35 feet S - 50 feet Ichibi Host - 100 feet. The Ichibi host has greater power over this technique, due to the simple fact that he is more in tune with the sand itself than anyone else could ever be. This is a passive technique. Meaning it can remain active as long as the user is able to supply it chakra, regardless of what else the user does. Activation costs D rank chakra, and every post after that costs one point, including the final post. Chakra control bonuses increase the range visible by one rank, excluding Ichibi. Given the overall size of the shark, it is not capable of inflicting serious injury unless it is able to latch on and the opponent is unable to remove it. The sharks bite has a strength of D rank, and they can be quite painful to remove. Up to four sharks can be created with this technique.

If the user opens the eye connected to the sand eye, the connection will be lost. Trying to expand the distance beyond thirty feet will double the cost of maintaining the jutsu for every five feet.

Suna Hogo Sochi [Sand Shield] Rank: D Type: Ninjutsu | Defensive Element: Sand Units: 2 Description: Extending their arm in a specific direction, the user forces sand in the area into a circular shield that hovers just in front of their palm. The shield may be moved so long as the user keeps their palm flat, making it a useful defensive jutsu, though the moment the users hand starts to close, the shield will collapse. The user wraps a target's entire body in sand, creating an incredibly hard protective shell around them. Inside the shell, the target's body floats in almost liquid sand, and the unique blend of sand and chakra puts them in a state very much like suspended animation. They are unable to move, and any motion made outside of the liquid sand will not affect them at all. This technique is primarily used for transporting badly injured people without further damaging them, or allowing them to damage themselves. This technique will not heal the target, nor will it restore their chakra. Absolutely no change will occur in the target's body while they are under the effect of this technique. The technique can last, without further chakra from the user, for up to one day. For longer periods, the user must continue adding chakra to the technique every twenty hours or so. Sabaku Bunshin [Desert Clone] Rank: A Type: Ninjutsu | Supplementary Element: Sand Units: 8 Prerequisites: Suna Bunshin Description: An advanced form of the Suna Bunshin, this clone has the same physical stats as the Suna Bunshin. However, this clone does not have the regeneration ability of that technique. Instead, this technique focuses on creating chakra pathways within the clone's body. With these pathways, the clones are able to utilize ninjutsu to a limited degree. Any sand jutsu known to the user below A rank can be used by the clones, and they can even use their own body as a source. If the clone uses it's body as a jutsu source, it is destroyed immediately. The sandstorm fills an entire thread and can only be used outdoors. While active, the sandstorm is capable of tearing skin and flesh off of a human body as if they were trapped in a sand blaster. Only the user is immune to this effect, meaning if your allies do not have a prepared defense, you will most likely kill or severely injure them. Being that the sandstorm is only a mimicry, having no wind to sustain it, the jutsu only lasts for five posts. This jutsu also requires a charging time before the sandstorm can begin. One post to gather the needed sand (Sand must already be present. Gather in this instance refers to imbuing it with chakra.), one to spread it into the air, and one to begin the movement. A total of three posts before the jutsu truly begins. (In the desert the first and second posts are unnecessary, as there is already plenty of latent sand in the area to begin the slashing motions.)

Otoshiana no Hara [Field Of Traps] Rank: A Type: Ninjutsu | Supplementary Element: Sand Units: 0 Range: Thread Description: The user channels their chakra into the ground beneath them, and drastically changes its structure. The changes are not at all apparent just by looking at the ground around the user, but if one were to look below the sand, they would see that countless holes have been formed in the sand all around the user. These holes are each big enough for one person to fit inside, and they typically number one hundred in number. Anyone stepping upon the top of one of these holes will find the top collapsing immediately, making it almost impossible to avoid falling into. Once inside one of the holes the hole will close up at the top and then start to elongate, growing deeper with the sand that forms the walls of the hole constantly rolling in such a way that finding purchase upon the walls to climb up is simply impossible, even with the assistance of chakra. And simple jutsu to move beneath the earth are repelled by the wall as well. If the user does find a way out, or they are lucky enough to avoid falling in the first time, they will still need to be very careful of all the traps that remain. However, one weakness of this technique is that the traps are very pressure sensitive. As such a solid impact with something such as a kunai can set them off. As such, more intelligent opponents may be able to find a way to set off the traps prematurely. Additionally the traps will not work on the user of this technique.
Once this technique has been performed, every time someone other than the user of it moves on the ground, they must roll a ten sided die. Even number, they set off a trap. Odd, they do not. Bakusai Kabe no Suna [Blasting Sand Wall] Rank: A Type: Ninjutsu | Defensive Supplementary Element: Sand Units: 2 Per Foot Prerequisites: Suna Kabe Description: Much like Suna Kabe, the user builds a wall of sand, using the same principles as in that jutsu. Once the wall is complete however, it has a different added function. Whenever the wall is struck by an attack, it retaliates, sending out a sand formed mimicry of whatever struck it. A simple punch will cause the wall to form a hand and punch back. A kunai will shoot back a shard of sand the same size and speed of the kunai. This ranges from simple punches, to jutsu and things like explosive tags. No matter what it is struck by, the wall will retaliate with equal force, mimicking the shape of it's attacker.
Unlike the Suna Kabe, which breaks down when struck, the Bakusai Kabe no Suna absorbs the attack so that it can copy it. Any attack up to A rank in power will easily be absorbed, and sand from the wall sent back in equal force. This does however weaken the wall temporarily as sand is removed from it. To compensate, the user may pay extra chakra, and add extra sand to rebuild the wall after it counters an attack.
