The boy wished he didn't have to stay in the weyrling barracks, but until Magith reached the point that he could fly, they were kind of stuck. At least it wasn't the one in Trine. That one would have had way too many uncomfortable memories, and while he would have been in his own bed, that probably would have made it worse. It was bad enough as it was.

Magith was laying down on the couch he had claimed for his own, his tail twitching as he watched E'lov sweep. Do not get dust in my nose. The blue said, watching the broom warily.

"I'll try."

He really needed to get somethings of his own, to make this more than just a room he was living in, since he had taken everything that had belonged to the others out, and the clothes that he had were raided from the various rooms around the barracks. He had come with only the clothes on his back, his dragon, and, shortly after he had arrived, his firelizard.

Said lizard was currently perched on top of his head, squeaking angrily whenever E'lov moved. "Well, if you wouldn't sit on my head..."

Baby whers it turned out when they weren't eating, chewing, and running around like the little forces of nature they were slept a lot. This of course was a rather welcome relief to Serom who'd spent the past couple of days tending to his all too high maintence little green. Sesk was certainly a pretty wher and she sharding knew it, making a point to only demand the best of everything. Something a bottom of the rung handler couldn't exactly always get specially when his wher in question was a small slim little green.

This of course often left Serom to spend what little free time he had wandering and exploring the Weyr turned Wherhold. Mostly he was looking to scavenge from the unraided empty rooms, but the Weyr also held a rather twisted sense of curiosity for him. He'd never been around dragons or even close to a Weyr other then the ones he'd seen in the distant on gather days. It was rather interesting to look through the now hollowed haunted halls and guess what life must have been like.

It was his roaming through one of these abandoned halls that brought him to a wrong turn and right into the weyr of E'lov and Magith. Pausing the man blinked at the small dragon and boy feeling as if he'd just stepped through time and into the Weyr's past. Hadn't all the dragons and riders fled? Perhaps this had been one of the younger ones that had been captured? No. . .not that couldn't be correct he was being locked up or watched. A traitor then perhaps.

Unsure what to do Serom let out a soft cough to alert the boy of his presence before presenting him with an easy if not rather darkly charming smile. "While I knew there were some riders in the handlers ranks I didn't think I'd find a young-un hiding in the likes of back here." The older man greeted giving a nod to the dragon as well his amber gold eyes glittering with curiosity. He'd never been this close to one of the old great protectors of Pern. Still weren't blue's supposed to be a touch. . .well bigger? Then again he hardly knew enough to judge size.

The black firelizard noticed the man first, before he coughed, and he took off from his place on E'lov's head to hover. "See, I told..." the cough interrupted him, and the boy turned around. He wasn't expecting anyone, so the appearance of an older man was a little surprising.

Of course, from the man's comment, he had apparently been just as much of a surprise. He chuckled. "Yes, Magith and I were bit, unusual, in our choice to support the wherhandlers."

Was it a good thing? Well, he wasn't sure yet.

The blue examined Serom closely, his eyes whirling with curiosity. There was something oddly familiar about the man, though the dragon couldn't place it quite yet. Find out who he is.

E'lov smiled, and then held out a hand. "Forgive my manners. My name is E'lov, and this is Magith."

"Eh if we all stuck to the same paths in life there wouldd be no diversity in this world." The older man replied waving off the boys rather awkward admittance to supporting the wherhandlers. Nothing wrong after all in being different. At least not in his eyes anyway.

Nodding to the boy and the now noticed hovering black flit he grinned. The boy seemed all well and fine, but he didn't particularly like the way the dragon was eyeing him. "Ah no worries I'm the one being rude accidentally wandering into anothers living space." Serom apologized taking the boys hand, his grip was firm and hand calloused from years of hard work, but still unusually lithe for a man of his age. "The name is Serom by the way, Handler of green Sesk. Well met E'lov and~" The man trailed off turning to nod to the little wee blue. "Magith. I'll admit I was surprised to see such a young dragon around here. Did you get a lift with the fleeing handlers here or were you a native of Malvren before the wars?" He questioned his tone friendly and deceptively charmingly warm. While the man himself was in his early fourties by the looks of it he held himself well, a sense of inner confidence and entitlement seeming to radiate from him despite his richly tanned and worn skin mottled with scars hinting at a far from privileged life.

"Honestly, and no disrespect ta your dragon there, I heard most of the handlers were killin hatchling dragons on sight no matter who's side they're on. Perhaps that was just a rumor though." Serom shrugged though his face did hint at a bit of worry for the young lad and his life-mate. The boy couldn't be over 17 turns old at most and from the state of his living area he wasn't exactly being looked after.

"Very true." It was nice to meet with someone who could care less about the fact that he had betrayed his own kind, and that, more than anything, would help with the boy trusting the older man.

"Ah, well, I'm pretty used to people wandering in and out of the weyrling barracks, so that doesn't bother me. I've had more privacy now than I did back in Trine."

His dragon was a little less trusting, but he curled back up into a ball, resting his head on his forearms and watching E'lov. He could keep his from making any major mistakes as long as he paid attention, and the man didn't seem as if he was here to hurt E'lov.

"Actually, we caught a ride with one of the other riders who had deflected. They're up at Benden now, but it was easier for them to bring us here." He hadn't heard that hatchlings were being killed, but then again, it wouldn't have surprised him. It was kind of a mad free for all. "I hope it was just a rumor." Just because he was on the wherhandler's side didn't mean that he wanted any of his clutchmate's to be hurt.

"Have you been a handler for long?"
PostPosted: Fri Aug 17, 2012 2:58 pm

"Eh I've been a handler long enough." Serom waved the question off with a smile listening to the boy intently. "So you're a lad from Trine huh? I didn't think yea could have been from Malvren. I hear they haven't had another clutch in a while." The older man pointed out giving a nod to Magith.

"Well I hope you're settling in all right despite those of us who like to wander a bit. I did hear there were a few other riders who came over to the Handler's side, but I haven't had the pleasure of running in to any of them. I suspect they're probably being used to help transport the higher ups from place ta place what with whers not usually liking to go between and certainly not with a rider. No telling where'd you'd end up doing that I suspect." Serom added as an after thought. In truth though he'd heard of a wher going between he'd never seen one do it, heck the most he'd seen was one occasionally hover in the heavier evening air and even then not for long.

E'lov merely shrugged. He hadn't payed much attention to what had been going on with the other weyrs, being at first busy with apprentice duties, and then once he was searched, with chores, and Trine drama. Not much of a reason to pay attention to any thing outside that.

"I'm settling in as fine as I can," he said, finishing up with his sweeping, leaving a small pile while he snagged the pot he was currently putting the dust and dirt in. He swept the dirt onto the dustpan and then poured it into the pot. "Not many people come up here." He hadn't seen much, if any, of the other riders as well, so it wasn't just limited to the wherhandler. "That would make sense. Especially with Benden being so far away." He hadn't really thought about what they would use the dragons for, but transportation made sense, and he also supposed that they might be used for hunting. It was a pity that he couldn't really do any of those, not until Magith was a bit older.

"So, I'm curious," he said, and with those words, his dragon picked his head up, watching warily. 'Where do the wherhandlers sleep? I know there was a new clutch lately, and I was half expecting to be booted out of here, since it doesn't require flying to get to."

At E'lov mentioning not many came up this way Serom frowned. It was a deep frown tinted with a bit of sorrow of a man seeing something wrong in the world he wasn't sure how to right. "That's quite a pity lad. Boy like you shouldn't be cooped up here. You should be out chasing some pretty ladies or as much as having a young dragon will let yea get away with." Serom replied and smiled his eyes distant with fond memories.

"I was quite a skirt chaser myself at your age until I had me little girl." He murmured low letting the warm memories fill him for a moment before turning and chuckling at E'lov's question.

"Whers and their handlers sleep where ever they want. Of course the higher ranking handlers have taken the nicer rooms, but because whers never get so big they can't walk down the halls and steps like a normal human can do we can pick and choose whatever room we like. They're not like dragons in that they get too big to fit in such places before they can fly and need to have a ground level room." Serom carefully explained watching as Magith lifted his head to eye his rider from the corner of his eyes. Hmm what got the blue so interested? The handler wondered, but left the question be.

"There was indeed a new clutch. I was there for it and they were kind enough to gift me an egg which is now the little vain green fast asleep in my quarters." He added with a grin and a shake of his head muttering. "Damn high maintenance little critter." Under his breath hoping that Sesk would sleep a while longer soundly and leave him in peace a few moments more.

E'lov chuckled. "Until this little guy's older, it's probably better that I'm cooped up here."

Does that upset you? his dragon asked, moving so that his head rested underneath E'lov's hand, all of his thoughts pulled away from being curious about the wherhandler.

"Of course not, love," the boy responded, caressing the blue's head. He was so distracted by reasurring the blue that he barely heard Serom mention that he had a daughter.

That was an interesting fact, though not one that he felt as if he needed to inquire into. If she was around, it was likely that he'd run into her eventually, and if not, well, he didn't want to bring up somehting that might be upsetting. Lots of people had been lost in the fighting after all.

"I guess that makes sense." Whers were smaller, so it wasn't really necessary for them to have their own spaces, though perhaps that would change now that there were bound to be more of them.

He had a baby wher? That was surprising. He had thought that the man would have a full grown beast, but apparently there were alot of differences between handlers and riders. "I bet she's a handful." That much couldn't have changed. All babies took a lot of work. "Do you think I could meet her sometime?"

Serom watched as the boy conversed with his dragon and for a moment felt a twinge of pain that he lacked such a close bond with his own wher. What must it be like to have someone so close to you that they could know your very soul. In the back of his mind though he felt Sesk stirr, the vain little beast rumbling and filling his mind with her displeasure as she sought her handler out to be appropriately admire.

"That and greens are rather small~" The man continued letting out a low soft chuckle as the boy asked if he could meet his wher. "Indeed in fact she appears to be looking for me now~" He added with a smile and a wink.

"Just be sure to be very complimentary, and if your not complimentary make sure to mix it with things that sound complimentary. I promise she can't tell the diff~ And there she is. Sleep well Sesk?" Serom asked as the little green wher trotting in whirring and rumbling in a scolding manner at her handler.

E'lov had likely since his defection seen quite an array of whers none though could surely match the beauty of Sesk though. The little green's hide shone and shimmered like the sheen of the richest emerald, the smile creature light on her paws padding up to her handler like a dancer on her pads.

Mine The little wher hissed posing and preening even as she took a demanding swipe at Serom's thick boots. The man reaching a rough hand down to pat the little green's head. "You're very pretty you vain beauty of a wherry." He rumbled somewhat good naturedly giving a nod to E'lov and Magith.

"Sesk this is E'lov and his partner Magith, do try and be nice." Serom added the little green wher seeming to take notice of the other occupants at the man's words and turned prancing her way up to E'lov to circle him preening and posing for attention occasionally whirring.

He nodded. That probably did help, with whers being a bit more convientently sized. Dragons were awesome, but they did take up a good amount of room, even the small ones.

He listened to Serom's advice. Alright? He wasn't quite sure of why he needed to, but he would. It couldn't be that hard, right? To complement the creature?

His black chittered at him when the small green trotted in, and he smiled. Baby whers were cute! Admittedly, they weren't as cute as little dragons, but E'lov was more than willing to admit a bias there. "She is adorable." Not hard at all.

He hadn't really paid much attention to the whers, spending of his time up in the barracks, barely leaving for food, and most of the times then only during the day. He couldn't help but look over the small green with interest, comparing her mentally to his blue.

She was a darling, not as delicate looking as he would expect a hatchling to be, but he supposed that was more of a wher trait. Most of the time you didn't need bulk up in the air, and the whers were used in things that often needed it.

Serom was lucky. He wondered if he could with asking a few more questions, and decided to go for it. "So, what kind of training will this little lovely have?" Did they train in groups? With all of the hatchlings? Or was it more of a one on one, figure it out on the go sort of thing?

When the small one approached him, he held his hand down, allowing her to make the first move. He wasn't sure if she would like to be caressed like Magith did, and he looked over at Serom. "Does she like to be caressed?"
