This doesn't seem fair to me. Everyone should get a clean slate regardless of what their parents did.

Are you referring to something in the bible or something in the legal system?
In the case of the legal system, the problem might be that the history of your parents (assuming they raised you as legal guardians) could influence your own personality and so encourage you, even if indirectly, to follow in their mistakes.
In the case of the bible, I never read anything about our parents' sins weighing on us, but regardless of that I believe we do get a clean slate to start with. Bibles are written by humans and there are several examples that can be given of human interference within the text. That being the case, the idea that sins are hereditary would likely be caused by the "same blood" theory. Yes, our DNA comes from our parents, but once upon a time I think it was believed that the very blood of a child comes from that of his/her parents. So if the father was a murderer the child had the blood of a murderer flowing through his/her veins.
I'm no history expert so I can't be certain of my theory, please don't take it as a fact. This is just my own speculation.

“Yet you say, ‘Why should not the son suffer for the iniquity of the father?’ When the son has done what is just and right, and has been careful to observe all my statutes, he shall surely live. The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.

You mean this verse Jeremiah 31:29-34 ESV / 10 helpful votes In those days they shall no longer say: “‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge.’ But everyone shall die for his own sin. Each man who eats sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge. “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. ...

Whatever I suffer on behalf of my parents will never outweight the gift of life they provided me. It is up to me to make the best with what I have, and to be thankful. That's my take on it.

That's the nature of the world. Our actions can have long term consequences that we don't know nor can see and can effect people that we don't even know that they will affect. I don't think our grandparents foresaw how their use of resources would effect our environment today. We don't know how our choices will effect our grandchildren. All we can do really is try to do what we think is best and not ignore new information about our actions as they become available.

The Covenant between God and the Israeli is set in blood. Meaning those today who call themselves Jew are bound by that same law.
It's really carrying the sins of your parents or forefathers, it's carrying on the promises of your ancestors.
Though... one thing that is genetic... is curses. I have seen curses lifted that had been around for centuries... in a single family. Though curses only work if you believe it will.
