☯Character Bio: Jangen was born to a rather well-off Earth Nation family living in Ba Sing Se. His father was a soldier and his mother had decent work. He and his siblings lived a pretty good life, but it was far too boring. Jangen was never one to enjoy school and basic learning. He was put into earthbending training and absolutely loved it, but he hated the oppressive structure of monotonous city life. Jangen was a slacker in much of the rest of his life, but he was a gifted earthbender and trained hard to become even better.
Still, the sense of yearning was always there. His older brother was happy to follow in his father's footsteps and become a soldier for Ba Sing Se and the Earth Kingdom, so was his younger sister. But Jangen was adventurous, he longed for freedom, to live with no rules, to live off the land, to connect with the Earth. Surprisingly, it was the structure of earthbending training that really drove this desire. He loved learning about the spiritual ideas of connecting with the earth, but felt like it was never quite taught or emphasized enough in the training.
When he was old enough, about age fifteen, Jangen left home using just that excuse, the idea that he wanted to further himself as an earthbender by better connecting with the earth. He soon discovered living free wasn't as easy as it sounded. No money meant no way to get food, shelter, or other supplies. He started working in a small Earth Nation city using what he knew of metal bending to help in bigger construction projects. Again, the wander lust set in. The structured, corporate city life was not for him. When he had saved enough money, he left his home in that city as well, took what he had, bought some supplies and a sword, feeling the weapon would help him survive alone in the wilderness.
Jangen left and again started living a nomadic life. He managed to survive mostly by living off the land, though he did resort to thievery every so often to steal some food for himself.
A few years after he started living on his own, he started to really look at the rest of the world and current events. He saw that disasters that were occurring and the sad condition that parts of city life were in. He compared this to the natural world and made the connection that it was the new technology-centered, corporate culture that caused the problem. He meditated on this and felt it was what he needed to do, this was indeed the truth and people needed to know it.
That was when he heard about the spiritualists. He backed the movement and joined in to help. He believes in a cause where the people deliver the message, but only wants to reclaim some land so the Spiritualists can live there and show the spirits there are still some who are not corrupted. He is willing to kill for the cause, he was still taught Earth Nation soldier morals. If you are willing to die for a cause, so too should you be willing to kill for it.
