"Rrrrmmmph....?" Aki muttered as he sat up in his bed. He lightly pushed the plush, navy blue comforter down off himself and rubbed his eyes sleepily. Glancing at his light blue alarm clock, he turned off the droning BEEP alarm noise. "What time is it...." he mumbled quietly seeing it was about seven thirty in the morning. Aki slipped out of his bed and walked over to his dresser, peering in the mirror at his reflection. "Mm I need to brush my hair.." he stated to his reflection. Slight dark circles had formed under his eyes from lack of sleep. He wasn't sure if he wasn't getting much sleep lately due to his nightmares or asthma.
Running his hands through his hair quickly, Aki grabbed his hairbrush and combed down his slightly spiky, light-chestnut colored hair. After brushing his hair, Aki took off his long sleeved and long panted pajamas, swapping them for his blue denim straight leg jeans, his long sleeve under amour shirt, a dark red over t-shirt, and finally his denim jacket with fluffy, white ends on the sleeves and on the hood. He stared at himself for a moment once more in the mirror before grabbing his scarf and schoolbag. Wrapping his scarf around his neck, he snatched up his schoolbag off of the back of his desk chair and darted down his stairs.

"Good morning mom.." Aki greeted his mother who was baking waffles in the kitchen. Aki passed the picture of his father on a stand and muttered, barely audible "Morning daddy..."
"Hm?" Aki's mother asked when she heard him mutter.
"Nothing mom I was just thinking of what I will pack in my lunch for today.." A lie.
"Oh okay! Eat up honey, the bus will be here in about twenty minutes! You came downstairs a bit late this morning..." she noted, as Aki was usually downstairs at seven twenty.
"Oh.. Well I...." Aki started and stared down as his mother put two waffles onto his plate. It was odd, she was constantly serving him. Didn't she know he could get them himself...?
"Staying up too late again? I knew I shouldn't have let you get that computer..." his mother assumed.
"No!" Aki protested.
"That's what they always say, dear..." she sighed and sat down at the only other chair at the table. She smiled to herself as she took a bite out of her waffle.
"Mm sure is good huh Aki?" She questioned Aki after she swallowed her bite. There was a long pause except for forks scraping every now and then on the plates.
"Aki! I asked you a question young man!" his mother demanded.
"Ah um yes... They're... Good..." Aki paused his hand movements for a moment to answer her.
Another silence.
"Aki, why don't you ever speak up or out? Or look at the people you're talking to?" she exhaled and shook her head. She knew he wasn't going to answer her. He never did when their conversations ended up like this.
Silence.
After ten minutes of silence Aki stood up and cleaned off his plate, setting it in the sink for his mother to wash.
"I will be outside waiting for the bus..." Aki stated as he walked over to the front door.
"Wait honey..." His mother stopped him.
"Hn...?" Aki turned around right as she kissed him on the forehead.
"Nng..." Aki cringed slightly but he stayed calm and forced a smile. He hated being touched by others, let alone kissed.
"Have a good day." she smiled warmly. She knew he probably wouldn't,  but she hoped for the best that today would be different. That everyday would be different for his benefit.
"I will..." Aki replied. With that, he walked out the door and towards the bus stop.

As he arrived at the bus stop, he pulled out his iPod Classic and plugged in his headphones. After plugging them in, he put only the right earbud in, so if someone greeted him he could say something back and not be oblivious to someone talking with him. As if he really would answer someone. Several minutes passed and other students from his school who rode his bus appeared at the stop. Aki moved a bit away from the chatting, giggling crowd. The majority of the group was girls except for two boys. They didn't pay much attention to Aki except for a few of the girls, who waved happily at him, and then quickly went back to chatting with their friends. Aki only nodded at them and leaned against the signpost that showed kids getting on a bus, signaling the bus stop's location.
"Hey, I need lunch money!" one of the boys demanded out loud, at Aki.
"...." Aki pretended that he didn't hear him. It was the same routine every school morning. Get asked for his lunch money, get it forcefully taken from him, and go yet another day without lunch. It was the same thing all the time. For some reason this boy, Natoshi, decided Aki would be his target of rage.
"Hey! Didja hear me, twerp? I said I need lunch money." Natoshi growled. The rest of the other students got silent and just watched. They knew what was going to happen. They were all used to seeing it.
"I b-brought lunch today...." Aki nervously stated he fumbled with his free earbud which wasn't in his left ear.
"Ooh a home cooked meal for me today! You really shouldn't have!" Natoshi taunted.
".... please just go s-steal from someone else..." Aki quietly pleaded Natoshi.
"Pshh what are you high? No no no. Only your lunch money or, now, home cooked lunch! Now hand it over or else." Natoshi smiled at Aki, only it wasn't a friendly smile it was one that said 'if you don't do what I say, you know the consequences'. Reluctantly, Aki did as Natoshi said. He set his bag down, pulled out a brown paper bag from within it, and handed it over to Natoshi. Natoshi sneered and snatched it out of Aki's frail hands. The other kids went back to gossiping and laughing after the scene ended.

When the bus finally arrived, Aki was on the bus first, since he was so close to where the bus stopped. He took a seat near the back, only definitely not the back seats. Since the buses have twenty-four seats, he took seat eighteen. This way he was in the back, away from middle schoolers and just out of reach of the backseat jerks. Natoshi climbed on behind Aki and shoved Aki when he passed where Aki had sat down. Natoshi decided to sit in seat twenty, directly behind Aki. The rest of the students from the bus stop climbed on and took their seats in the back. Aki wasn't used to sitting in the back, he normally sat in seat twelve. The very center of the bus. He did thus because there was one little girl who sat there who was extremely nice to him and gave him a snack. Today he wasn't in the mood so he simply put his left earbud in and turned up the volume to his song to drone out the noises of the bus.
The ride would take about forty minutes, so Aki was startled when after ten, the bus came to a halt.
Construction work was causing a traffic jam. Aki sighed and shifted in his seat, he could feel Natoshi's knees pressing through the seat. He knew Natoshi was doing it on purpose, but he ignored it. Suddenly he could smell the scent of smoke. Aki promptly covered his face with his scarf, choking on the smoke. He peeked over his seat to behind him and sure enough, Natoshi and three other boys had lit cigarettes and were blowing the smoke at one another. They were getting a kick out of the smoke loops. Natoshi noticed Aki in the corner of his eye and whirled around so he was looking directly at Aki and let out a puff of smoke in Aki's face. Aki was unprepared for this action and was caught off guard. Instantly he started to cough and choke more violently as he slid back down into his seat. He hated Natoshi so much right now. Did Natoshi even know he had asthma? Aki pulled off his scarf and used it like a fan to blow away the smoke that was lingering overhead, but it was too late, Aki had ready inhaled too much of it. He cringed as he couldn't stop coughing and grabbed at his jacket. His eyes were tear filled from not only the smoke, but also just himself starting to cry. A girl sitting in front of Aki stood up and looked over the seat at Aki. Aki could barely see her through his watery eyes, but he did recognize her. She always sat in seat sixteen. She never got involved with the others in the back, she preferred to sit with her younger sister. Her name was Kimi, and she was peering down at Aki with horror in her face. Her black and green dyed hair drooping in her face slightly. She climbed over the seat to sit with Aki and started patting his back roughly to help him. At this point, Aki didn't care if someone was touching him, he just wanted fresh air. He started gasping and Kimi knew what was wrong she opened the window in Aki's seat and the one in Natoshi's seat.
"Hey what the hell are you doing, freak?" Natoshi yelled at her for opening his window.
"I am getting fresh air to come into this bus! You need your window open to draw out the smoke and he needs his," she pointed at Aki who was still gasping and choking "open so that he can have fresh air!"
"Uhh, why?" Natoshi questioned idiotically.
"He has asthma you moron! You can't smoke around someone with asthma!" Kimi screamed at Natoshi.
"Mmm... Do I care?" Natoshi laughed and looked around at his 'friends', but stopped when he realized they all had serious expressions on their faces. He glanced at the two other boys, and to his shock, they had put out their cigarettes.
"What the? What? You guys seriously..? Really? You guys....? Hideki? Soshi?" Natoshi stared at them, almost dropping his cigarette out of his mouth.
Kimi cut into his state of shock by telling him "I wonder if your father would beat you if he found out you smoked? It's not like you can't not take any MORE beatings from him then you already receive!"
"You shut the hell up!" Natoshi raised his hand to hit her and she flinched, but stayed glaring angrily at him. Natoshi held his hand in the air for several moments before bringing it down and smothering his cigarette on the seat, which made a SSSSSS noise as it was smothered.
"Good boy." Kimi mocked him and quickly turned around to find Aki standing, taking in air from outside. She smiled and sat back down. Her little sister caught her by surprise, as Kimi didn't realize she had been watching.
"Ah, Tiana everything is fine. You ca-" Kimi was cut off by Tiana.
"Big sissy, is he okay?" she looked at Aki with curiosity.
"Hm? Oh.. Um.. Aki...? Are you alright?" Kimi tapped on his back softly.
"Eep! Um y-yes... Thank you.... I'm sorry you had to go to such trouble for me... I hardly know you.. And yet.. Y-you helped me..." Aki said solemnly "Thank you.." he quietly thanked her.
"It was nothing Aki! And I don't hardly know you! We're neighbors! I used to come over and play with you! You know... Before.." Kimi stopped when she realized what topic she had just brought up.
"Ohh I remember now.... Ah.." Aki trailed off as the bust started moving again. He could remember the tragedy so clearly.

"Hahaha daddy! You're so silly!" Aki giggled happily as his father made a face over his own using some of the fruits from the fruit platter. It was Aki's sixth birthday, and little did he know at the time, the tragedy waiting to happen.
"Haha ohh I'm not sure Aki! You're a goofball too!" his father protested playfully, passing the gift from Aki's mother. Aki did a raspberry at him and, laughing, he took the gift to open it. Inside the wrapping was a new set to his growing collection of Legos.
"Thank you so much mommy!" Aki excitedly started opening the Legos.
"Woahhh easy there fella! Aren't you going to open my gift?" His father handed Aki another gift wrapped up nicely.
"Oh! Yeah!" Aki took the gift and tore through the wrapping. Within the wrapping paper was a dark red and white colored cat stuffed toy. It went up to Aki's waist if one stood it up on its legs. Aki stared at it and then jumped at his father.
"Thank you so so sooo much!!" Aki thanked his father.
"You're welcome buddy!" his father rustled Aki's hair while he hugged him. His mother was busy snapping photos, like any mother does during their child's birthdays.
"Aki, would you like to play for a bit before the cake?" his mother asked him after taking another shot of the scene.
"Hmm... Yes I would please!" Aki told her and climbed out of his father's grip to open his Lego package that he was going to open earlier. After achieving help with opening it, he started to build random little objects. There weren't enough in the package to build what he wanted, so he ran to his room, grabbing his Lego Tote. Inside the tote had hundreds of other Legos from previous birthdays and Christmases. He started to drag it, but it had gotten too heavy. Panting, Aki looked around his room and saw his pair of roller skates.
"Aha.." he grabbed them and maneuvered them underneath the tote.
"Per..fect!" Aki panted and wheeled the tote out to the living room where his new Legos were waiting as well as his cat toy.
"Aki! Do you need any help?" his father asked and rushed over to where Aki was having trouble.
"N...no! I got it..." he exhaled. Taking a few deep breaths, he continued on, pulling the tote.
"Are... Are those your roller skates under there?" his father peered down underneath the tote, to where he saw Aki's roller skates.
"Yeah! They're helping me.... Unf!.. Pull this!" Aki gasped slightly, it seemed like his asthma was going to get the best of him.
"Here I am going to help you!" his father told Aki as he started to lift the tote for Aki.
"Noooo," Aki protested and pulled on the tote. "I can... Haff... I can do it..."
"But son..." his father looked down at Aki with worried eyes.
"I can do it..." Aki whimpered, still tugging at the tote so his father would put it back down.
"Hmm," his father thought for a few moments "alright fine.. But the minute I see you struggling! I swear... Jeepers you go for it big boy." his father shook his head doubtfully, but put the tote back onto the skates. Aki took a few more deep breaths and continued pulling the tote. Eventually, he got into the middle of the living room and opened the tote.
"Yay!" Aki exclaimed excitedly, as he started to construct what looked like a small fort. His father smirked and sat down on the floor next to him, observing him closely, trying to figure out exactly what Aki was building.

After about twenty minutes of precision and Lego building, Aki had, indeed, constructed a small fort for himself as well as his toy cat. He ran to his room as fast as a kid with a severe case of asthma could. He came back with a small satchel full of several hacky sacks. Happily, he started tossing them at his father from behind the fort. Aki had put a few in his toy's arms, expecting it to throw them. However, Aki kept taking them for ammunition.

Finally, Aki ran completely out of ammunition to throw at his father.
"My turn!" his father mused as he sat behind the coffee table and tossed them lightly at Aki.
"Agh no!" Aki squealed. He tried avoiding some and others just hit him anyways. After his dad stopped and laughed whole-heartedly, he looked at Aki with a smile on his face, "Time for cake?"
"Umm.. Okay!" Aki set down the hackey sack he was about to throw and grabbed his stuffed toy. He darted over to his father and took his hand with the hand he wasn't holding his toy with. They both walked into the kitchen where Mayu Aki's mother, was adding finishing touches to Aki's birthday seat. The chair had four balloons tied to it and streamers hanging off it as well. Aki jumped joyfully into the chair and grabbed his fork and knife, ready to dig into a slice of cake. Mayu pouted at Aki and mouthed 'hang on'. Aki unhappily set the fork and knife back down, pouting himself. When Jiro his father, got to his seat his parents chanted the Birthday Song then waited as Aki blew out the seven multicolored candles on his blue frosted marble cake. Mayu clapped her hands together and then sliced a small sized piece for Aki, and two moderate sized pieces for Jiro and herself. Aki grinned and started eating his cake happily. Jiro smiled at Aki and ruffled his hair.
"Mmf! Hey!" Aki giggled.
"Heheheh I couldn't help it Aki! You little rascal!" his father noted. He laughed and looked down at his slice of cake. It looked delicious and delectable. He took a bite and coughed quietly. Mayu looked at him with a look that said 'everything alright?'. Jiro nodded abruptly and cleared his throat. Glancing at Aki he smiled and watched him eat. Aki kept eating before he noticed Jiro was watching him. He stopped mid-chew and looked at James questioningly. "Everything okay daddy?" Aki asked, spewing few food particles.
"Yup, just watching you." Jiro told Aki. He looked back at his piece and took another bite. He cringed slightly, it was strange for Jiro to be acting so odd. It was only cake. He wondered if there was something in the air. He took some more bites of his cake and looked at Aki again, who smiled happily with his face covered in cake and frosting. Jiro laughed, but started choking. Mayu rushed over to his side and started patting his back.
"Honey! What's wrong?" Mayu shrieked as Jiro didn't stop. Aki was staring frightened when Mayu looked over at him.
"Aki! Call an ambulance NOW!" she yelled frantically. Aki started crying but got off his chair and ran over to the phone. He fumbled around with it but quickly dialed 911. A lady on the other line picked up.
"Hello. Please state your emergency." she said calmly.
"Help!! My daddy! Help!" Aki sobbed through the phone.
"Where are you?" the lady asked.
"Umm.. I'm at home!" Aki sputtered.
"An address please." the lady told him. Aki looked sound the kitchen.
"Aki what's taking so long??" Mayu yelled frantically. Aki cried harder and searched for mail. There was a bill with their address on it, he told the lady on the phone.
"We'll be there as soon as we can." the lady said and hung up. Aki put the phone back on the receiver and looked back over at his parents. Mayu was attempting to do the heindlick maneuver. Jiro was gasping for air in between choking as his face started turning purple. Aki sat down where he was standing and hugged his knees to his chest, crying. Aki had his eyes closed and heard the police and ambulance pull in their driveway. The police came in first and Mayu explained in a rush what was happening. The police had one of their men go out and get the medics that had arrived with the ambulance truck. They rushed in with a stretcher, rapidly got Jiro up on and then drove off with him. Mayu and Aki got in their car and followed behind the ambulance. When they got there, the doctor had bad news for Mayu and Aki. Aki was waiting in the waiting room while Mayu had a talk with the doctor. Mayu came out to Aki with tears streaming down her face. She had a new look about her. A sad, distant look on her face. Aki looked at her questioningly.
"Mommy, where is daddy? Is he okay?" Aki tugged at her shirt. Mayu pursed her lips and shook her head. She bent down and whispered to Aki "Daddy's in a better place now.. He won't be coming home anymore.." Aki looked at her with an estranged look.
"What.. What do you mean m-mommy? Daddy isn't c-coming home..?" Aki started to sob and Mayu hugged him.
"No.. He's not coming back Aki." Mayu told him as they walked out and to their car. Aki sat in his seat, staring out the window. Jiro was gone, Aki didn't know what he was going to do without him. He loved him so much. Aki fell asleep in the car staring out the window.

Kimi frowned, it seemed Aki had stared off into space. She sighed and turned around to find her sister suddenly sitting across in seat seventeen where some boy was sitting. The boy seemed amused with Kaede. Kaede was playing with his hoodie strings. He noticed Kimi staring and turned Kaede around to face her sister and he turned to look out the bus window.
"Sissy!" Kaede smiled at Kimi.
"Hey there cutie. Were you bothering him?" Kimi teased playfully.
"Wha? Nuh-uh! He said I could sit there and play with his strings!" Kaede protested. Kiki laughed. "I was joking Kaede!" Kimi smiled and ruffled her sister's hair softly. She looked at the boy sitting in seat seventeen. She hadn't seen him before, had he always rode the bus? She shrugged and set Kaede in Aki's seat as she moved back to seat sixteen where she normally sat. Kaede bounced up and down on the seat happily and started playing with the fur on Aki's hood. Aki blinked a few times, coming back to earth from zoning out. He felt someone playing with his fur and he glanced back. Kaede paused and then looked up and smiled at him. "Your jacket is very soft and fluffy!" she exclaimed, continuing to play with the fur on his jacket. Aki stared for a moment, but then smiled softly at her. "Yeah.."

After a while, the bus finally arrived at Aki's school. Aki got off and walked with Kimi.
"So then, this is a first. Right Aki?" Kimi asked Aki walking in with him.
"...hn?" Aki looked at her oddly.
"You're walking with me!" Kimi giggled.
"Oh.. Yes I suppose I am.." Aki stated, watching the floor. Kimi looked at him and pouted.
"Hey, Aki my face is up here. I'm not on the floor!" she complained. Startled, Aki quickly looked across at her. She was shorter than he. Significantly shorter, about four inches shorter.
"I-I'm sorry..." he apologized as his gaze dropped back to the floor. Kimi watched him and shrugged.
"It's okay. Sorry to complain!" Kimi told him.
"..." Aki kept his gaze lowered and just nodded to her. Kimi was going to say something else, but she was cut off by bumping into someone.
"Oh! Sorry about that!" Kimi rubbed her nape and looked up to find Natoshi.
"Yeah you had better be sorry ya little loser." Natoshi snapped back. Aki gripped his backpack strap tighter and went to walk around Natoshi, slightly waving bye to Kimi.
"Hey heyy! Where the hell ya think y'ere going?!" Natoshi grabbed Aki's shoulder roughly. Aki winced and turned to face him.
"What do you want now...." Aki asked him. Kimi grimaced and shoved Natoshi.
"Get lost you jerk. You already blew smoke in his face on the bus! What else could you do to him?" Kimi growled at Natoshi.
"Pffft! The wimp needs a girl to stand up for him! For your information, Kimi," Natoshi spat out Kimi's name as if it were a bad omen "The lunch I took-- he gave me-- didn't have a dessert in it for me!" Kimi didn't know that Natoshi had also taken Aki's lunch.
"Just go away Natoshi. Maybe if your father did find out about what you do all the time he would hit you harder next time!" Kimi shouted at him. Aki's eyes looked around frantically. Many students were closing in around them. Too many. It was getting stuffy where they were standing and the air becoming unable for Aki to breathe. Aki looked for an opening and there was! A girl in the crowd had tripped and fallen over and two other students were helping her up. Automatically, right before Natoshi struck Kimi, Aki grasped her hand and pulled her away. Dragging Kimi he ran as fast as he could to get away from the crowd and Natoshi. When they were inside their lockers' hallway, Aki stopped running and let go of Kimi's hand. He bent over, putting his hands on his knees, trying to catch his breath. It had happened so fast that Kimi barely knew what had happened. She blinked and looked at Aki, who was panting and practically gasping for air.
"Thanks Aki!" Kimi smiled at him, relieved that she didn't have to try and block Natoshi's hit.
"Don't.. Thank me," Aki paused to gasp "yet.. He still knows where we have.. Class. And then the bus ride home..." Aki panted frequently between his words. Rushing out of there so quickly wasn't good for his lungs. They only functioned properly about 47%, much less than a normal person's lung function, far less than a person with standard asthma. This is why he had been diagnosed with a severe case of asthma. Only a small percentage of people in the world were diagnosed with severe asthma and it was the rarest case of it, too. It was just his luck to have been diagnosed with a severe case of asthma.
Kimi frowned, knowing he was right. "He wouldn't--can't-- do anything in front of a teacher.." she said while walking with him to his locker. Her locker was actually nearby; their last names both started with 'ta'. His Tamakoda her's Takine. Aki sighed and leaned his forehead against his cool, black locker. He shut his eyes and replied to Kimi "A teacher... Wouldn't stop him..." Aki still paused to breath in between his words, but his breathing was easing up. Kimi stared into her locker. She knew he was going to say that. And she knew darned well that Aki was right. She shook her head while getting out the books she needed for her morning classes.
"I'm pretty sure we'll be okay!" she told Aki cheerfully as she slammed her locker shut, causing Aki to flinch and look at her. She laughed "There you go! Now you're looking at me!" Aki blushed and opened his locker, hiding his face in his locker as he got what he needed.
"Y-you just st-startled me.. That's all...." Aki objected. It was true that the sound of the locker slamming shut had caught his attention, however he didn't perceive her reaction to him glancing over. Kimi giggled at Aki and tapped his shoulder lightly. "C'mon, let's get to our class!" she tugged his jacket softly. Aki whirled around as he stood up so he could face her. Only when he finished whirling her face was right there. Aki stared with his lips glued shut and slightly widened eyes. Kimi stared back, smirking at the moment. Her bright green eyes upholding their glance at Aki's dandelion yellow eyes, while Aki's eyes wavered a bit before him turning back around to hide his reddened face. "Um.. Yeah let's g-go.." Aki started to pace walk to their first class. Kimi smiled and followed behind him.
"Don't think you're going anywhere without me, Aki!" Aki slowed up a bit to let Kimi catch up, and then they got to their first class. Luckily, Natoshi wasn't waiting for them inside the classroom. Classes came and went, and eventually lunch arrived. Aki walked out of his fifth period class and to his locker to get his afternoon things. He scoured his locker for any change that might've fallen out of his things previous days for lunch money. He had ninety-six cents. Definitely not enough for an entire lunch. He sighed, closing his locker and peeked over at Kimi's locker. There were three girls huddled with Kimi. Laughing and giggling, talking about shows he didn't watch, stores he didn't go to, usual girl chitchat. Kimi noticed Aki peeking and pulled on his arm.
"Hey Aki! Why don't you eat with us?" Kimi suggested, she knew Natoshi had taken his lunch, but Kimi had an idea.
"Um.. I-I don't have a lunch...." Aki mumbled quietly. He was way too shy to talk in front of four girls. Kimi shrugged, "so we can give you some of our lunches!" the other girls looked at her with curiosity and Kimi waved her hand at them. Aki blinked and went to shake his head, but Kimi grabbed his sleeve and pulled him along. Aki winced, however stayed caught up with Kimi enough to make it look like he wasn't being pulled to follow. The other girls and Kimi started up their conversation again, only asking Aki questions about those shows he doesn't watch.
"So, like omygosh, Aki who do you think killed her in Preppy Little Fibbers?" one of the girls bounced in front of him. Aki was taken aback by her sudden question and stumbled on his feet a bit. He didn't know what to tell her. Aki thought for a moment before coming up with an answer "Well I used to think it was the blond girl but now I think it's the creepy boyfriend....?" Aki wondered if he was talking about the right show. The girl pouted and put a hand to her cocked hip, suddenly stopping.
"How could you have ever thought it was her?? It's obviously the creeper boyfriend!" she exclaimed. Aki frowned, he didn't realize it had been so wrong to say that.
"I-I'm sorry.... I was... I.." Aki stammered as his gaze dropped to the ground beneath them.
"Well, whatevs! I don't really care anyways! I'll just have to see on the final episode!" she noted as she started to walk again and turned back around to talk to the other girls again. Kimi fell back to quickly talk with Aki. When she did, Aki noticed her feet and he looked over at her face.
"Don't mind them. She was talking about a show on every Tuesday after school. I figured you hadn't watched it. Good guess about if being the creepy boyfriend!" Kimi winked at Aki. Aki's face turned a nice shade of pink and his eyes widened as he quickly looked back at the ground. Kimi giggled and patted his back softly. Aki didn't so much mind it when Kimi pat his back. Kimi's hands were small and delicate. Much smaller than other people's, especially boys. Aki glanced at his own hands. They didn't look like a boys hands, but more feminine. His nails were neat and long, whereas other boys in his school had rough nails cut far back. Grease stains from working with mechanics were also present on other males' hands. Aki sighed and peeked back over at Kimi. She had let go of his sleeve, but was keeping a pace slower so Aki could walk slowly and have no need to rush. They finally came upon the Cafeteria, the crowded, loud, bustling with activity lunch room.  Aki noticed a chill in the air, the air conditioners were working well in the Cafeteria. He shuddered and Kimi noticed him shaking slightly. She told her friends to get to the usual table and that she was going to have a talk with Aki. She got closer to him and peered at his face. Aki backed his head away at her sudden movement, as an initial reaction.
"Ummm... Y-yes Kimi..?" Aki asked her, adjusting his scarf.
"Are you too cold Aki?" Kimi asked him, resting a hand lightly on his shoulder. She thought the temperature was just right in the cafeteria. She didn't know what was wrong with it for Aki. Then again, there wasn't much she really truly knew about him. Aki cringed slightly but looked down at her.
"Um it's a bit chilly due to the A/C, but I'll live..." Aki explained to Kimi. Kimi nodded and tugged on his shoulder a bit.
"C-mon! Let's get going to the table!" Kimi gestured, letting go of his shoulder and pacing ahead. Aki caught up behind her and sat across the table. Kimi and her friends sat around the opposite side. Aki frowned and glanced down at his folded hands on the table. An awkward silence fell on the group. An extremely awkward silence. Kimi's three friends started unpacking their lunches, constantly replying discreetly to a received text. One of the girls spoke up, but was quickly cut off by Kimi
"So I got a ne--"
"So girls what are we going to share with Aki?" Kiki glared at her friend who was about to say something. Her friend looked at her oddly and shrugged it off.
"I can give him some of my carrots!" one of the girls named Carlynn happily stated, taking out a bag of carrots from her bag. Aki had heard his name and his gaze was creeping back up to their faces. Carlynn had a cute baby-doll face and majestic brown hair flowing down off her head. She grabbed some from the bag and gave them over to Aki. Aki gave her a small smile and took them from her hands.
"Wow Aki your fingers are so cold and you have amazing nails!" she exclaimed excitedly. Aki blushed at the half-compliment.
"Um.. Th-thank you..." he popped one of the baby carrots into his mouth. Kimi's two other friends suddenly became very interested.
"Really Carlynn? How nice are they?" The girl who was about to speak earlier asked Carlynn. Her name was Blanca, and she had a heart shaped face with golden blond ringlets falling into her face and just above her shoulders. She reached across the table and snatched Aki's hand from where he had it sitting on the table. She pulled his hand over so Aki was pulled up off his chair and leaning across the table. He frowned, attempting to pull his arm and hand back from her falsely nailed hands. His breathing became short and quick silent gasps as he started panicking to get his arm back. The only problem was the three girls had flocked around his arm examining his feminine nails. Kimi made a face and tried squeezing in between them to give Aki his arm back, unsuccessfully. Kimi's actions caused the girls to jerk Aki's hand away from Kimi. Aki, pulled yet again by their actions, became draped onto the table. Aki's chin hit the table hard, but not hard enough to cause extreme pain. He started to pull himself up off it when something smacked his rump. He froze where he was and didn't want to turn around. He already knew who had done it. As Aki gasped for air that wasn't giving, Blanca spoke up, releasing Aki's fragile hand. Aki fell backwards into him and frantically jumped away from him.
"Hey Natoshi baby!" Blanca rushed around the table to get to her new boyfriend. She giggled as she threw herself at him and he caught her triumphantly, pushing Aki back into the table. Kimi reached out to Aki and grabbed his arm, pulling him to her side of the table and away from Natoshi and Blanca. Aki gave her a look of relief, but bent back over trying to catch his breath. He hadn't even exerted himself and yet this was happening. He clutched the edge of the table until his knuckles turned white from gripping so hard. Kimi frowned and looked at Carlynn and Miu and whispered
"Either we get rid of Natoshi or move to a new table today, girls." Carlynn and Miu looked at her oddly and they both objected.
"Um, but we always sit here Kimi..." Carlynn pouted. Miu proved to be more upset over what Kimi had said.
"What's your problem Kimi? Lately you've been acting really weird and I don't think it's PMS!" she whispered loudly at Kimi. Kimi blushed, enraged she would blurt something like that out-loud.
"Hey! Can you not say that so loudly please? And well maybe times are changing?!" she fought back. Miu frowned as a disgusted look crossed her face.
"Fine, you and... Your boyfriend," she gestured at Aki with the same look she gave Kimi "can get a new freaking table!" Kimi gasped. Miu hadn't ever been so mean. Was it because of Blanca and Natoshi, that she was putting up an act so suddenly. Or maybe something else. Kimi scowled at Miu and pulled Aki up. Aki looked at Kimi with pleading eyes, as if to say to let him back down. Kimi couldn't though, because they had to get a new table. She mouthed the word sorry to Aki as he coughed some more and gasped for air. Kimi felt her brow furrow and a sad look come onto her face as she glanced at Carlynn. Carlynn was staring in shock and sadness back to Kimi. She reached secretly around Miu who was looking over at the lovey-dovey couple across the table to give her a piece of paper and the rest of the bag of her baby carrots. Kimi smiled and mouthed 'thanks' as she hurriedly moved herself and Aki to a different table. She helped Aki settle into a chair, and sat next to him. She hesitated slightly, but put the carrots down in front of him on the table and stopped her arm while moving it back to herself. She pondered her next actions for a moment, but proceeded. Kimi placed her hand on Aki's back gently and rubbed it, wondering if that could help him at all. She patted softly frequently, before his choking fit stopped. When Aki finally did calm back down, he put his arms on the cold table and buried his face. Taking smooth, deep breaths, he slowly lifted his gaze up, tears visible on his face. He glanced at Kimi, wiping his face quickly. Kimi gestured at the carrots.
"Look, Carlynn gave you the rest of her carrots!" Kimi stated. Aki looked down at them and nodded. He opened the bag up and took out one baby carrot to eat.
"I'm s-sorry Kimi...." Aki muttered to Kimi, staring down at the carrot as he ate it slowly. Kimi furrowed her brow in confusion.
"What are you apologizing for Aki?" she wondered. Aki glanced over at her and frowned.
"Your friends... Hate you because of m-me...." Aki stated plainly. Kimi shook her head at what he said.
"No not because of you!"
"No.... I believe it's because of me...." Aki quietly told Kimi. Kimi grimaced and couldn't help herself from doing her next action. She reached her arm over to Aki's hand, snatching his hand, and slapped the back of his hand with her opposite hand. Aki helped and ripped his hand away from her, rubbing the now red back of his right hand.
"W-why did y-you h-hit me...?" Aki sputtered upset. Kimi sighed and rubbed her face.
"I'm sorry Aki... You just can't blame yourself for other people's problems.. Like mine. I had it coming anyways.. Carlynn is more friendly than the other two, but she has to put up and act for them still.." Kimi paused going to put her hand on Aki's shoulder, which made him slide away from her so she couldn't, "besides! I was getting annoyed with their preppy girlyness" Kimi laughed slightly. She glanced behind her at Blanca's tabled and sighed, they were giggling and laughing. Seemed like they'd already forgotten about her. She looked back over at Aki.
"...." Aki stared down while rubbing the back of his hand, ".. Then why were you friends with them...?" Aki asked her softly. Kimi sighed and shrugged her shoulders.
"Well in middle school they were my best friends. Then in Junior High, things got slightly weird. Finally when High School arrived, they became indulged in different things than I. It seems I should have stopped hanging out with hem then to save myself the torture." Kimi chuckled at her own demise as she rubbed her nape. Aki didn't reply, only stare at the bag of carrots while eating a second. Kimi sighed and opened her lunch bag up, revealing a delicious looking ham and cheese sandwich. She licked her lips and went to take a bite, but noticed Aki staring and his stomach growl quietly. She pulled the sandwich away and bit her lower lip. She could deal without her sandwich one day if Aki did for many. She held out the sandwich to him, waiting for him to take it. Aki stared for a moment before asking
"You're not gonna hit m-me again are you..?"
Kimi burst out laughing, which Aki couldn't see how hitting him had been so hilarious to her. She shoved the sandwich at him and looked at his face.
"Seriously Aki? You're going to hold that against me forever aren't you?" she laughed. Aki blushed and took the sandwich turning around in his seat. He tried to frown or scowl at her, but he could only feel a smile curling at his lips. He looked at the sandwich she had gave him and he turned his head back around to find Kimi happily eating a Boston Cream Pie yogurt. Aki glanced back down at the sandwich and started eating it. It had been a while since he last had a ham and cheese sandwich. Aki enjoyed the taste so much, that he finished the sandwich in seconds. Which only made him even more hungry than before. He opened the bag of carrots back up and ate those. He had enjoyed sitting with Kimi and the fact that she gave him her sandwich. He figured he could sit with her again tomorrow, only bring his own lunch.
