User ImageHis pride was hurt. When an entire class laughs at you because you're 17 and you can't swim, yea... your pride gets hurt; or your manhood. Sometimes both. Either way, Satoshi had a miserable time during gym class earlier that day. When his classmates found out he couldn't swim, and witnessed a minor panic attack from the koi Mononoke, he was belittled with comments like:
"Little fish can't swim!" "He's a fish out of water!" "Get the guppy some floaties!"

His classmates cared more about the fact he couldn't swim, than the fact he could breathe under water. Who needs to swim when you have gills to do the breathing for you? All that flopping of your arms and kicking of your legs wasn't needed when you could walk on the pool floor and still breathe!

With heavy sigh, Satoshi walked down the empty hallway, clad in a pair of swim trunks, flip-flops and a towel loosely hung over his shoulder. He was going back to that horrible chlorine smelling pool room to practice in the middle of the night. He'd show his classmates just how good he could swim! If he could figure it out that is. He pushed the door open and flicked on the lights, glad that no one else was there. He really didn't need any more embarrassments for the day. "Alright fish boy," he started to tell himself. Needing the little pep talk. "It's time to learn to swim. Not like I can drown." he scoffed to himself. He was making fun of himself, what an a*****e!

Tossing his towel on to the bleachers, he kicked his flip-flops off and stepped towards the edge of the pool. He stood there staring at the still water, narrowing his copper eyes. 'Just kick your legs and flap your arms, that's all you need to do. You can do this! Water is your thing... you're a fish for crying out loud!' He thought to himself, dipping a foot in to test the temperature of the water. Cold. Just the way he liked it. Without further hesitation, he took a deep breath and held it, dropping right off the edge into the deep end. There was a minor splash while Satoshi entered the water, and then a burst of bubbles as he lost that breath of air. He switched to his gills and began to breathe underwater as he kicked wildly in the deep end, struggling to get back to the surface.

He looked as if he were drowning! He struggled for several minutes before he began to get frustrated with himself. Kicking his feet and flapping his arms got him nowhere! Scowling, he closed his eyes as he lay on the bottom of the pool. In his fish form he could easily adjust his swim bladder to float around and swim in the water, why was it so hard as a human? What was he doing wrong? Thank god he was alone in the poolroom, or someone would probably think he was a drowning victim...

Mystique huffed in annoyance as she walked down the hallway towards the poolroom, she couldn't believe she forgot her book at the pool. She had spent the class reading having been given permission to sit on the bleachers instead of being in the pool due to the fact she was still shedding her winter coat. She was just glad that she could brush the worst of it out of her tails in the morning before heading to her classes, it would be really embarrassing if she was leaving clumps of hair everywhere.

Entering the poolroom she headed to the part of the bleachers she had been sitting at earlier that day. She found her book right where she thought it would be, picking it up she checked to see if there was any damage from being in the chlorine filled room all day. Finding none she sighed in relief, the librarian could be scary when it came to books.

Turning to leave her eye caught on a towel. It was strangely out of place as she had watched the instructor make sure everyone had their towels before allowing them to leave. Looking around from her spot on the bleachers she frowned, as far as she could tell she was the only one there.

Leaving the bleachers she set her book down next to the towel and walked to the edge of the pool. She blinked when she realized that someone was laying on the bottom. Since there were no air-bubbles she figured he wasn't drowning and bodies float so he wasn't already drowned but that didn't explain why he was down there.

Careful not to get her silk kimono wet she kneeled down next to the edge and called out, pitching her voice to be heard through the water, "Are you alright down there?"

It was easy to fall asleep on the bottom of the pool, especially from the white noise of the pool filter system. But over that constant buzzing sound he heard something, a voice. And to be more specific, a girls voice! That brought a smirk to his face and those copper eyes opened to peer up at the surface. Before he could stop himself, he opened his mouth to speak to the damsel at the edge, sucking in water instead of air. Sure, he could breathe under water... but he couldn't fill his lungs with it! A rush of bubbles exploded from his mouth as he gripped his throat. Why was he such an idiot?!

Unable to swim for the surface, the boy started to move towards the shallow end. He was walking as fast as he could, a comical sight to see as he ran in slow motion, the water putting up a good resistance to his movement. Once his head cleared the water, his shoulders shook violently from his coughing. Was he pissed? Yes. At her? Naw. He was pissed at himself for trying to talk under water. He knew better than that! But he could be mad at himself later, now he had to milk the situation...

Reaching the edge of the pool, he pulled himself out to collapse against the tiled flooring. He was still coughing up and spitting out water, shifting to his side. As he lay there, he glanced to the girl curiously. He couldn't quite recognize her out of uniform, was she a classmate? He wasn't sure but made a mental note to ask. When his lungs and throat cleared he sat up slowly and wiped any trace of water from his eyes.

"Sorry," his voice was rough from coughing. "Didn't scare ya, did I?" Looking at her again, he flashed a gentle, charming smile. "For future reference, never try to talk under water... water doesn't work like air in the vocal cords." He kept his eyes on the girl as he brushed wet hair out of his face.

The sudden appearance of bubbles caused alarm to spike through her. She stared down into the water hoping desperately he wasn't drowning. When she say that he was moving to the shallows she let out a relived sigh. She never would have been able to forgive herself if she had caused him to drown.

She watched worriedly as he coughed up water, that had to hurt. "Are you alright?" she asked concerned. She eyed the slowly growing puddle wearily, just how much water did he inhale she wondered.

She couldn't help but laugh at his comment. "I don't think I have to worry about that," she waved her three tails, "When you have as much fur as I do you don't tend to spend much time in water."

Sobering she regarded him curiously. He appeared to be some kind of fish judging by the gills, if she remembered correctly there was a koi among the students. "Your the Koi Mononoke aren't you?" She racked her brain trying to recall if she had ever heard his name but came up blank. "I don't believe I've ever caught your name, I'm Mystique." Standing she offered him a hand to help him up.

"I'm fine now." Satoshi said reassuringly, taking the hand that was offered to him. As he rose to his feet, he couldn't help but smirk. She heard of him, eh? He gave a bob of his head, "Yes, I'm the koi. The name's Satoshi... It's a pleasure to meet you." With the girl's hand still in his, he pulled the prince charming move as he called it. Bowing slightly at his waist, he rose the girl's hand to his lips to gently kiss the back of it before he released it.

"I have to admit, I'm shocked someone else came down here. I didn't want anyone to see how I fail at swimming so I came down to practice on my own while everyone was on his or her way to bed. At least, that's what I had hoped." As he spoke, he move to where his towel was. The cotton cloth was used to dry off his face before loosely draped over his shoulders. His body was littered with patches of scales, the orange and white flakes glittering under the lights. The majority of the scales were concentrated down his back, though he had several other patches around his shoulders, elbows, collarbone, stomach and knees.

"I'm sure I've seen you around school before, but I can't remember you. I'm bad with names and faces, just like with grades. Can't win 'em all, right? But maybe we haven't met... I'd surely remember blue eyes like yours. They're a beautiful color, blue, just like water." Although it had the sound of a crappy pick up line, Satoshi was serious just then, and unable to tear his eyes away from hers. The color was fascinating to him!

"Sorry, I don't want to embarrass you or anything." He smirked a bit, cocking his weight onto one side. "Sometimes my mouth runs faster than my brain, anywho... I'd ask if you'd want to swim but I doubt you have a bathing suit on under that kimono... and although I wouldn't protest to skinny dipping......" His shrugged his shoulders with a sassy grin, eyeing her a bit. "We'll save that idea for another day outside of the school grounds." he winked, hoping she understood he was simply joking.
