Garrett's green eyes opened slowly when he was suddenly being addressed, giving Thornley a most perplexed expression. He glanced uncertainly towards Aravel, who simply observed them both with the same reserved deer-expression he often wore, before returning his attention to the blonde. "Lord you may be, but you've called me a fool twice, and that just makes you a prat." There was no apology or hesitation in his tone. "I didn't do this to shave some meager coin off your palm, and I don't use him for anything, least of all like the muck you seem keen on treating me as."

Furrowing his brows, his smile finally dimmed to being almost entirely absent, though it clung stubbornly in a last attempt to be better than the self-serving frump in front of him. "We'll see what you afford in but a short time, m'Lord. I pray you'll show even a fraction of kindness to the unfortunate creature that will be subjected to your tender mercy." The dark-haired man exhaled slowly, spine rigid. Were Thornley any less than a Lord, he'd have drawn his blade and been walking over the man's body -- as it were, a duel between Lords, no matter if he was disgraced, would be more trouble than it was worth. "Aravel may find you of interest but I, my Lord, have better things to do with my time than entertain someone so ignorant. A good day to you all the same, hm?"

He was quite done, moving as though to step around the wall of a man. Garrett would much rather return to a certain merchant's home and utter every word of rage in private that he'd never even consider breathing a sound of in public. He still had a reputation to uphold in darker corners of society, as it were.

"And perhaps the reason he does is because I know the deer is your tool." Thornley's posture too, was upright and strict. A hand slid neatly into his coat, touching his weighty totem with self-righteous authority, as if he hadn't been lamenting its presence just a while ago. "If, or when -" he noted grim, "it emerges, it emerges innocent, and I do not blame innocents. You need not worry about my deer, but perhaps worry yourself about your denial in using your magical stag for party tricks."

"The Old Ways are to blame, as is the weakness of the hearts of men to resist the ward-tree's call." The hand withdrew from the cold stone. "And Man is always guilty...especially of insulting those above his station."

Then the hand formed a sturdy fist, and Thornley, very undignifiedly and ill-advisedly, threw it towards his face.

Well. He hadn't been expecting that.

A reprimand? Certainly. To be flayed by sharp tongue and wit? Sure, he dealt with that daily. He was not, however, prepared to handle the business end of a fist, but it was ready to deal with him, colliding solidly with the mercenary's high cheekbone. So unsuspecting and stiff in posture as he was, Garrett's head snapped viciously to the side, the force behind the brick wall's attack making him spin slightly to the side and topple backwards. He slammed into something lean and unforgiving - the dappled spots by his eyes betraying it to be Aravel's flank - the angle of which allowed him to stumble and catch his footing rather than fall gracelessly to the ground.

The Guardian's intent had been met and with it, his more pressing necessity came to play. Where he had gently warned the blonde of handling his Chosen before, Aravel was far less forgiving this time; his head lowered and turned sharply, intending to catch the extended arm in the prongs of his rack. Leveling his head for the briefest of heart beats with his glowing, almost toxic green stare meeting Thornley's, his intrigue in the Lord was alarmingly absent. If Thornley wasn't faster than the Buck, it was likely that the sudden, sharp toss of Aravel's head was going to hurt.

Distantly, Garrett's voice drawled with satire. "He says he's not a magical stag for tricks."

I assure you, he deserves every scrap he instigates. XD

And so there was a roar, with no coherent words, but managing perfectly to convey indignation and pain and egotistical rage as his muscled arm was matched by the buck's snapping motion - a battle cry too, for as his torso was wrenched upward, he swept a wild and well-soled foot towards the man just balanced on his feet. If Lord Thornley Ormonton was going down, then the instigator (his memory was conveniently short-term) was most definitely going down along with him, preferbly much, much harder.

It was most unfortunate that the mercenary's footing wasn't as able as it usually was -- the previous night and his jarring slug to the face had him fairly incapacitated -- and it was doubly as unfortunate that he was as prideful as the Lord who so sought out to disable him further. Garrett uttered an inarticulate sound of indignant surprise before his knees buckled, almost instantaneously reaching for Aravel; with the buck busy with trying to separate the two, he was of little aid to his Chosen in that moment.

And so, the esteemed sons of Earl and Viscount toppled to the marketplace road, entangled in the beginning throes of proper fisticuffs.

It would take Aravel several more minutes of stamping his hooves in deliberate places and pushing his antlers and nose between the two until he could urge his Chosen down the street and away from the burly blonde. The Guardian would have to continually keep his antlers against the dark-haired man's back to keep him from turning around to address the Lord, avoiding another scalding confrontation -- for now.
