Well honestly I didn't see this on here, though I could be wrong and somehow missed it, but anyways this is an amazing series. I'm all for the Survival Horror, Psychological Thriller / Psychological Horror games/movies/books/role-plays and this has to be one of my favorites.
of course then there is the other game I love called Eternal Darkness. It screws with your head in so many ways. This is considered a Psychological Horror of course. I can give you the summary off the back of the case if anyone would like?
Anyway, if you like Silent Hill which game do you like the best out of all of them, and if you care to tell, why?
I like the third but to me it wasn't as thrilling as it could have been, and a bit too easy to play through, but none the less I still enjoyed it! I also got all of the endings I've played through it so many times!
The second is amazing as well, more thrilling then the 3rd, and I still got the endings to this one too.
The fourth, oh my god, yes, though still not as thrilling as it could have been, it had enough to keep me pacified. I think this one is one of my favorites really.

I really enjoy the characters and story lines of the Silent Hill games, but I've never actually played one. Why? Because I get spooked easily and tend to throw my controller... and then die a horrible death. (This causes me issues with the games I DO play, and I just feel like Silent Hill would be too much to handle.)
Do you feel like they are keeping pretty true to themselves with each game? Or do you think the series is starting to evolve and/or deviate wildly from its origins?

Do you feel like they are keeping pretty true to themselves with each game? Or do you think the series is starting to evolve and/or deviate wildly from its origins? Honestly it depends, I believe, on the game you are watching someone play, or are playing yourself. From the first Silent Hill up to the third and fourth yes I feel they have largely remained true to themselves. However a lot of the prequels and off shoots of the story line are somewhat disappointing in my opinion.
Like with the game Shattered Memories, (I believe that's the name but I don't have the game here with me now, a friend is borrowing it.) overall, yes, they kept the feel of a Silent Hill story, but they took out many of the elements in the game that made it fully enjoyable. When I played it I found it amusing that the game made you take tests a few times through to evaluate your psyche, and then applied it to the game itself to mess with your head, essentially making it so that the game played you as much as you played it. However, what I disliked was the fact that when you played, you couldn't fight the things chasing you, you could only run. Yes that added some sort of other challenge to the game, and it was enough to keep my pulse racing, but it still took away from the experience.
It didn't help either that none of the enemies you faced really looked any different. They were pretty much all exactly the same and eventually that just grew to annoy me.
The movies, though, they aren't the best. The first one that was made was interesting enough, and it kept my interest at least. The quality wasn't bad either, but the lack of depth in the Dark World kinda depressed me a bit, and also the fact that not many of the creatures made their way into the film. I understand they probably had a budget but still. I honestly haven't watched the new one? My brother, who is also a hardcore fan of Resident Evil and Silent Hill said that it wasn't worth watching and that they did a terrible job. So I'll probably wait till it comes out to watch it.
Also, don't feel bad, I have a friend who can't even handle being in the same room as a horror movie or game, even if she is distracted by something else and isn't looking at the screen. I'm a huge horror/psychological thriller fan so I often feel bad for her having to deal with me some times. XD

I enjoyed the first movie, and I'm sure I'll see the second one... when it comes out on DVD, and I can rent it. The ending of the first one made me cry. Which actually isn't saying much because just about every movie makes me cry!
Shattered Memories definitely sounds like it has an interesting concept. I read about a game yeaaars ago that really messed with your head. Like, for example, you would face a boss monster--but the controller would say it was "unplugged" so you had no control and had to watch the boss rip your character to pieces. Or you'd walk into a room, and you'd be walking around without a head. Things like that. Games like these would royally freak me out, but I definitely like the concept behind them.
I was asking about Silent Hill since it's such a long-standing franchise. With Resident Evil, this latest game has most critics and fans feeling like it's having a major identity crisis.

Oh don't feel bad, the ending was pretty depressing, especially the part with Cybil (The cop). I always liked her, even in the game that she did show up in and it was sad how she died.
Resident Evil, yeah for the most recent one, the story seems interesting and all, but it does seem like it's not sticking much to it's roots, and like it's wondering a little too far off of it's path. I mean, from the previews I've seen from one of the newest it seems like the creep/scare factor is barely there. Then again it could just be because I haven't played it so I don't know yet, but still.
Also I think the game you're talking about is in fact "Eternal Darkness" It's not a Silent Hill game though. There will be times that you will walk into a room and suddenly your body parts will start exploding off of your body and you can still walk around while it's happening. Until, of course your legs explode. You're character will also be so freaked out that they will stab themselves and cause damage to their life bar. Not to mention at times the game will literally scare you into thinking that it's deleting your files. Another will be that the tv says that it's switched to another channel/ makes you believe the visual of the game vanished. Really there are way too many things that it does to explain, but I think you get the point. ^ ^
Yeah "Eternal Darkness" is a Psychological Thriller / Horror that really screws with your head. I've beat it once or twice now though.
Also, thank you very much for talking to me here. No one seems to pay any mind to the threads I start and maybe it's because they have no particular interest in the subject, I'm not sure? I am grateful that you have stopped to try and talk to me though, really. ^ ^

You just have to keep trying to stimulate conversation. :] Some great threads get accidentally overlooked.
What year did Eternal Darkness come out? I could have sworn the one I read about was yeeeears ago, so I thought it was older.
Yes, I have double-checked it, but someone said that RE6 is officially dramatic horror instead of survival horror... which is incredibly sad considering the first game was considered the first of the genre.
Who is your favorite Silent Hill character?

Yeah, I should try to more often. ^ ^
Eternal Darkness, I believe came out around 2002. I mean it may have come out before and been remade, but I don't believe it has?
Yeah, it is, unfortunately. It's sad that they drifted away from their original genre, cause it kinda ruins the point of the game I think? I mean, Resident Evil 4 didn't even scare me in the slightest and I've beat it literally 5 or 6 times so I think the downfall started there.
Also, the real first of the genre was something called "Sweet Home" or something like that, though they seem to prefer to say that the original Resident Evil was the first of that genre. They drew off of ideas from Sweet Home to make their game however, so others say that it was the first not the other way around.
My favorite character? That's a difficult one really. Game wise...if we are choosing from main characters probably Heather, the protagonist of the third game.
However if we are talking about side characters...Cybil who I believe, if memory serves right, was in the first or second game, would have to win. I haven't played them in forever though.
As for favorite enemy, though he is the most annoying enemy to fight/deal with in the game it would have to be Pyramid Head.
In the movie, my favorite character is Cybil hands down.
What's your favorite character?

Probably Cybil.
Are you looking forward to seeing Heather in the new movie or do you think it'll be way too off the mark?
I have a friend who is obsessed with Pyramid Head. Like... unhealthily obsessed, total guy crush.
My longest lasting impression from the first SH movie is that whenever Johnny Cash's "Burning Ring of Fire" comes on the radio, I get the chills.
Scariest moment of the Resident Evil franchise (for me) is hands down Nemesis jumping through the police station window in RE3. I throw my controller EVERY time. It's been years, and I've played that scene a dozen times. I have the escape route memorized. I still scream and toss the controller! Second scariest is the zombie hands/arms breaking through the boarded windows in the police station in RE2, early in the game, if you walk too close.
RE4 was a real turning point. I kind of think of pre-RE4 as one thing, post-RE4 as totally different. I know a lot of people like the over-the-shoulder camera angle, but I think prerendered, stationary camera angles like in the early games made it more difficult but also a lot scarier. When you couldn't move the camera, you were always afraid of what was off screen.

Well from the previews I've seen so far, I believe they seem to have done a semi decent job at least with the actor. However, I'm not so sure about personality, from what I've seen so far. Also, taking a few other friends opinions on the movie, I'm still not so sure if I'll like the film. None of them had really good things to say about it. So most likely, it will end up being way off the mark.
Doesn't mean I won't watch it ever though. Like I said before, I'll just wait for it to come out on DvD.
I agree on the RE3 comment. I hated it and it took me forever to get past that one part. However, the zombies arms coming out of the windows was a little freaky for me, but not too too creepy. I don't really have any other scariest moments for the Resident Evil franchise.
Yeah, the style was okay but I still have to say that I prefer the old one. As you said it was much scarier, and therefore, thrilling for me. Granted there were times when I wished I could look behind me, but that was the feeling it was supposed to give, so I can't complain.
Resident Evil 4 though truly lost it's horror factor for me though. I think there was only one time in the game that I ever really got slightly freaked out, and that was somewhere towards the end when you are going through the tunnels and trying to avoid one of the huge infected guard guys. (I can't even remember what they are called right now.) I do know that it's when you are waiting for the lift to come down. It took me a few tries the first and second time I played the game through.
Edit: I totally forgot about the Ring of Fire comment. Yeah that part was amazing. I picked out the song right away, and found it slightly amusing because I had just listened to it before watching the movie.

How long have you been a fan of SH?
Every time it gets foggy in my city, I always think of Silent Hill. (I know, it' snot technically fog, right?) No one ever gets my jokes about it, though.

I have actually been a fan of Silent Hill for a long while. I can't remember exactly when, but I know I liked the series from the first game when it came out. I watched someone play it when they got it, and then I decided to try it out myself. I fell in love with the series.
Oh yeah, I used to visit my Grandmother when I lived in Pennsylvania and up there, we have a lot of cities/towns that get extremely foggy. Well these towns would get fog horns that would go off on extremely foggy days or when there was smog in the area. It sounded exactly like the Silent Hill alarm. XD
I would probably get your jokes about it. I already make jokes about fog here and the only reason my friends understand it as much as they do, is because of me showing them the games and movie. We have a mall sort of thing here in Florida and at night, when I'm hanging out with my brother (cause I get to go there sometimes when he is working) it reminds of of Silent Hill it's so creepy and desolate. I told him that they should film a SH movie there one day. XD
Also, I believe in the movie is Ash, smoke, and Fog.(Smog) I can't recall what it is in the games, but I'm pretty sure it's the same thing.
