For Metal, I'm currently listening to:
Machine Head, Sepultura, Pantera, Slayer, Metallica (80's), Nevermore, Judas Priest, Dream Theater, Lost Horizon, High On Fire, Iron Maiden, Amon Amarth, Prong, Mayhem, Mastodon, Overkill, Carcass, and Wolves in the Throne Room
I don't particularly like to pick favorites when it comes to metal, though. I like listening to a wide variety of subgenres, from trad metal to groove to thrash to death to black. I love almost everything about metal.
For rock: Rush, Van Halen, God is an Astronaut, some punk: Black Flag, Maximum Penalty, On One, Dead Kennedys
For classical: Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Bach, Widor, Dupre
For electronic: Joe Boyd Vigil, Wagon Christ, Amon Tobin, Emancipator, Irresistible Force, DJ Calus, DJ Clarknova

What's the appeal of black metal and similar music? The sound of black metal seems to me to be more about ambience and atmosphere than about lyrics. That has a certain appeal to me. The raw sound also has a nice feel to it.
