Seriously. I absolutely adored the Mages Guild, and when I learned that apparently it disbanded after the Oblivion Crisis I was grief stricken. However, there was a ray of hope when I learned of the College. HOW-freakin-EVER, once i found it, it was awful. At first, I thought it was going to be awesome, what with the excursion into the ruin to learn as a genuine student with a real instructor. Ah, but twas a lie, for just as with all of the other major questlines in Skyrim, it was short, rushed and weak. I mean c'mon.... The Staff of Magnus, item of ultimate power, too dangerous to even be wield in the world: making for an epic questline, right? But nooooooo, what happens? You find the staff in the ruin, it has a barrier that gets increasingly powerful, Thalmor jerk snooping around, he takes it, super un-epicly kill Archmage, you kill him, Yay you're new Archmage AND you get to keep this super powerful artifact that almost destroyed the world in a chest in your house somewhere.
The worst part is, the college doesn't feel like an organization, a family, if you will. In Oblivion, the Mages Guild, the Fighters Guild, the Arena, even the Dark Brotherhood, felt like a family. A group, an association, a brotherhood. In Skyrim it's nothing like that.

I understand your complaints but I have to disagree with a couple things. 1.The staff is one of my fav. weapons I use it all the time after I obtain it from that rather harsh dragon priest. 2. I thought it was somewhat cool that the arch mage got killed by being flung out a window. 3. It isn't suppossed to be a really a put together group they are free to do as they see fit. and do so accordingly.
I do however the whole college lacking but hey it is still better than some other questlines in the game.

I didn't mean to say that the staff is useless, just pointing out that one second it was too powerful to be controlled by mortals and the next you can just take it home like it's no big deal. I was sad when the Archmage died! I didn't have any real bond with him but... I kinda had a thing going with his ancestors.. : biggrin ovyn Aren, Fathis Aren:: Yeah but.. but.. STILL! I miss the camaraderie.....

Yeah, I honestly think that as far as the big questlines go, the Brotherhood was the least rushed and the College was the most rushed. It really disappointed me that they did nothing with the Psyjic Order after the whole eye of Magnus fiasco to extend the questline, because honestly...that Order didn't have much of a part anywhere, yet they're a hugely sought after organization that has become legendary. I thought I'd at least get to go to their island and help with the Eye.
As for feeling like a family, the Brotherhood wins out again. Right when I walk in they're telling each other all the funny stories about their day and teasing each other like family would. I also noticed the Sanctuary has a warm sort of feeling to it despite any creepiness; something the other organizations didn't have either.

The Dark Brotherhood was the first of the guild-type questlines I completed, and it seemed to be pretty lengthy and emotional. So when I completed the College next, I thought in comparison it was very short, rushed, and rather lacking in emotion. In the Dark Brotherhood's plot twist, I really felt that sense of betrayal. I felt the tension leading up to it as the guild seemed to be splitting into two factions. I didn't care anything about the arch mage, though, or his arch nemesis. Other than the fact that I love high elves, even when they're utterly contemptible! whee
The College of Winterhold started off great! You're a total newb and have to take training classes. You genuinely feel like the new kid at school: talked to almost like a child by your teacher; picked on a bit by the school bully (J'zargo); making new friends with your classmates. Then all of a sudden you're thrust into the position of Mr. Bigwig and given all these mega-important solo tasks, and then you're magically The Chosen One... It was like a chunk of the story was missing - a huge one!
I love the college setting and atmosphere and history, though. It really does feel like a big "college" campus. There's drama. There are little side quests. And the main plot ends up being really cool, however quickly it all comes about and finalizes.

There are still a number of downloads coming for the game. Once read somewhere that Skyrim will have the most a Bethesda game has ever had, supposed to round out to about 10 in all with at least 5 being the size of Dawnguard. So plenty more that could be going down, if what I heard was true anyway and I hope it is. Thank you...

Greetings;
What I really like about the college of winterhold...Well, it made leveling up my magic schools a breeze. There is a quest you get where you put on some gloves and clean out those focus fountains, right? Makes your magic never diminish for like 3 real world hours-not in game hours. Telekinisis on a broom for 5 minutes and went from alteration 78 to 100. Go down to the beach and cast soultrap on some horkers and conjuration maxed out. Don't really remember off hand what I did for Illusion, but I know I used one of the more major spells, why not, right? Magic meter is always full. Problem was that the 3 hour time limit ran out before Restoration and Destruction were done, but they are easy enough to fix. Restoration seemed to go up faster than destruction, so dual wield flames and heal other on say...A torture Victim twisted Then to finish off destruction, put on your best magic regenerating robes and head on down to the ratways...Through the doors of the tavern and on down to where the crazies are kept underground. That fellow, can't remember his name offhand, locked up behind that door...Never comes out until you follow the main quest far enough to know he is a part of the Blades. Shoot at him through the door, open and close the peephole so he goes in and out of combat after a powerful shot! Once out of combat, your magic will regenerate quick and you are ready to hit him all over again mrgreen
Antronach forge is pretty cool. Lets a level 1 character get their hands on Daedric weapons and armor, though not much and certainly at a price...Don't need the recipies either if you know what you are doing and ah...Have the sigil stone.
And what about all those other new members, ones who came before you, finding their dead bodies here and there can be fun. The brothers who wanted to make the perfect mead. The Argonian lady who wanted to practice her illision magic with Skeevers or that one person...Burn to a crisp on the beach, wanted to perfect flame cloak for everyday life in ol' frozen skyrim. Thats always fun.
Big thing about the college is that it is just a place to work on your skills and do your research-within reason of course. Not supposed to be a family. Hehe. Remember what happened with Arniel? Arniel's endevour...Finds out just what happened to the dwarves and you get to summon his otherwise useless shade...Oh and you get Keening which is nice. Missed it since my days as lord Nerevar.
The master level magic quests are kinda fun too. Bully a unbound Daedra...That was fun. Cowing that obnoxious...Hehe...
Thank you...

Not true Todd Howard said there was only going to be about six the first three will be xbox exclusive for thirty days. Don't trust the gangs of internet jokeys who are just guessing.

I understand where you are coming from with this but I must disagree witha few things.
Number one. You keep the staff BECAUSE you are the Archmage and you are the best person to keep it safe (Keeping it in a chest is just stupid keep it in the collage)
Number two. Sure it could have been better but it still makes for a good story and is enjoyable .In fairness it can not be said that the Collage sucked because it is really useful.
Number three. The Mages guild was amazing and I felt like I belonged so try and feel like with the collage.
