Smoke and Mirriorsa cowboys, indians, and spooky things RP. There is a legend, some say as old as the land itself...
It tells of a man who loved the moon so passionately that he dared to reach for her. He battled the mountain and the clouds, the sky itself, and soon even the stars. He defeated all of them, but the violence that his fervor wrought brought only darkness into his heart, and soon he stood alone with the moon.
His love had turned to obsession, and now before the maiden moon stood not a paramour or a lover, but a man; selfish, greedy, and full of want and desire. He took her then, breaking her innocence upon the sky, leaving a trail of tears across the night.
When her brother Sun awoke, he followed the trail, confused and afraid of what had happened while he slept. When he discovered the man, head still laid out upon the Moon's breast, his vengeance was fearsome. Down he cast the man, evil spawn of the earth, and cursed him too - never would he roam while the Sun watched vigil over the earth, lest he face the fire of the Sun's anger again and be consumed by it..
The maiden Moon, too, left him with a curse: b*****d children of their union, twisted and weak, but full of hunger. Once she swelled the babes were cast downwards too, back to their sire, and forever forgotten by their mother. Condemned forever to walk only in shadow, facing their deaths in the daylight and their crimes by the light of the Moon, for all eternity.
...and so it was that the first Vampire was born, a curse of flesh, fire, and blood.© robayn . 2012 ------ Despite how ridiculous this legend might seem, the citizens of the small hamlet, Silver Pines, take it very, very seriously. It might be because of the alarming number of missing persons that the local sheriff carries a list of, as many names as he can get from the tight-knit, close-lipped persons of his town. It could also be because of the strange rumors, monstrous sightings, and nights filled with inhuman cries.
Or maybe it is because the town's Mayor is a vampire. THE Vampire of the legend, or so folks say. Of course he simply laughs when the subject arises, though most people know better than to bring the subject up at all.
Still, vampires, werewolves, goblins and gooks be damned, Silver Pines is still a fairly nice town to make home. As far as amenities go in the American Old West, Silver Pines has almost all of them. The town saloon, general store, post office, and even a school house on the edge of town, not far from one of the best fishing holes in the area. There's an old military post about a mile out as well, surrounded by forest, but it's been abandoned for almost ten years now. It serves as a sort of hostel from time to time, or play area for the kids, until the sheriff chases folks out, of course.
And, despite the rumors of disappearances and bumps in the night, people are happy. Plenty of land for all sorts of endeavors, good relations with the closest tribes, and lots of work in the local silver mine for anyone who doesn't mind delving into the dark.

He found it fitting that this trial should be held in a theatre.
Of all the human customs, he had always believed the performance of justice to be the most compelling illusion of reality. Gather the crowds, spin a fine web if delusions of grandeur and burlesque laws, and you could sell a human soul.
But it was not a human soul on the menu today. It was one of his, gone outside of their laws, and so it fell to him to deal with the matter.
After midnight, when all the town was asleep, the theatre was alive with death; as far as his eye could see, Handsciou was surrounded by the shrieks and laughter of devils delighting in their flesh and blood. Primal dances in the flickering firelight reminded him more of a circus than a court... but some things were necessary. These creatures were his to command, and they were also his to indulge. There was an energy throbbing in the theatre, amplified by hunger, and every animal there knew that the only way to sate it was with murder.
This was just the curtain-jerker.
In the place of honor, Handsciou sat at the forefront of the spectacle on elevated dias. He gestured once to one of the enforcers and he disappeared and, as if on cue, the atmosphere in the room changed. The creatures in the room sensed the change, the nearness of death, and they were not disappointed. It took less than an hour; the pretense of sentencing, the begging of the accused, and the sentencing: fire.
The last ashes of the young vampire scattered into the winds as the large, double doors of the theatre opened and creatures within began to depart in their own fashions. Some of them slipped into shadows, some of them shifted, but most adopted their human guises and took the roads. Their need for violence had been satisfied and an example had been made: no recruitment in Silver Pines.
Handsciou adjusted his dark trimmed hat and stepped out into the night, the last to leave the theatre, and looked over the skyline. This was his town.

"Did you hear? Something happened last night, yeah some kind of crime I think."
"Crime? What sort of crime? Did someone get shot?"
"No nothing like that, but then I'm not really sure. I've heard things here and there but that's about it."
"Well who was it?"
"I'm not sure, all I know is the Mayor got involved or something like that. Guess that means whatever happened must have been bad..."
In any other town talk like that might have been considered big news but around here it was just one more odd thing. One more new strange act or occurrence that Jack heard about as he swept his store's porch in the morning. The women of the town would walk by and avoid eye contact with him as they whispered, and then once they past they would continue whatever gossip they were discussing beforehand. Again nothing really new.
For the time Jack had been here the town was indeed strange, but it didn't matter much to him at this point. It could have been five times stranger and he would still stay because he really had nowhere else to go. Anywhere else would likely bring unwanted attention or worst someone who actually recognized him as his former self. Here though he could sweep a dusty porch and go inside and wait for the first customer of the day to come in and look at his tools, or have someone ask for his help to repair something. Just another day in Silver Pines.
With luck Jack could live out his days here and maybe even find some semblance of peace. Maybe even try and forget about his past and actually become the man he was before the army. That was a long shot though, and likely a long ways off as well. First he had to put enough years behind him that people would either forget or decide to no longer care. For now though he would just take care of the store that allowed him to live comfortably and without worry of shelter or food, it was his store.

Though he was new to town, Hunter was no stranger to what sort of "strange" things went on inside of the small hamlet called Silver Pines. He didn't owe this omniscience to observation, for he'd just arrived a top his tall, dapple-grey mare, the both of them coated in dust and mud from their long journey. Nor did he owe it to news, passed from ear to ear, because so far no one in this town had bothered to more than look his way. He didn't blame them, of course, hardly any settlements in the West had opened their arms to strangers in the past, and they weren't about to start now.
Let alone one that dressed like death -- head to toe in black leathers, from his wide-brimmed hat, leather jacket, pants, and boots, riding a pale horse. He had no sunny disposition to compensate for the gloom, either; a gritty face, youth erased by the weathering of a long road, and long hair dark enough to match his mood. His hair was the only thing that betrayed his heritage, though he never took to braiding it or adorning it with feathers and beads the way his cousins did - that was something his mother would have taught him, had he not been raised by his father.
Mixed blood was the popular term, and possibly another reason that Hunter did not expect different treatment in this town from all the others.
Still astride the mare, he directed her towards what he assumed to be the town's best supply for what he needed and hailed the man sweeping the porch, hoping he was either the owner or the clerk. "Are you open?" He asked, and then continued before he could be directed elsewhere by a surly-looking counterperson, "I'm looking for silver. I'm told this town has its share of a supply."

Looking over the man who had just spoken to him Jack found himself inwardly amused that it would be an outsider that would actually talk to him. Still by his looks Jack was not sure he was entirely thrilled to have been spoken to. It had nothing to do with the man's heritage but the way he was dressed, like something out of a dime novel. All in black and atop a pale horse for that matter, if the man wasn't a bounty hunter he was something close.
Had the law finally caught up with him? Had he run out of time to try and put his past behind him? By the way he spoke it didn't sound like his objective was Jack, or a man who looked just like a former soldier. He was looking for silver, which was not the easiest of metals to come by. Given that some towns had started up just to form a silver mine and then went barren when it was all dug up. Still a few recent surges of towns like that had put this stuff in high supply and Jack had decided to take stock while it was in the cheap.
"Silver? Yes I have some. Come inside and we can weigh some out for you."
Inside Jack moved behind his counter and pulled out a box of silver ingots that had been made to sell the metal at a more convenient means. Most people bought it now for making plates and tea pots. It was a very malleable metal and was easy to cast into many different shapes, some people were even making statues out of the metal but then it was likely to be silver coated not cast out of pure silver.
"How much did you need? With the supply I have I can cut you a deal at 25 cents a bar," Oddly enough Jack felt compelled to ask the man about his reasoning for the metal, he didn't normally care what people did with the stuff they bought from him but this was different for some reason, "What do you intend to do with it, if you don't mind me asking?"

Stepping into the town General Store and dusted the dirt of the road from her skirt before adjusting her basket. It took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the dim light versus the bright light of the outdoors. Eva looked over at the proprietor, seeing that he was with a customer she roamed the store a bit gathering a few things she needed. Coffee beans, baking powder, honey, flour, soap, and lantern oil. Realizing she couldn't put off her purchase any longer regardless of the other customer's service being first, Eva walked up to the counter to make her purchase.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Tompkins," she smiled brightly, trying not to seem overly rude about interrupting his sale but she did have to get these things home before getting to the school building, "How are you this afternoon?"

The sound of the door opening had Jack looking up from the man and the silver transaction. In a normal town a man might be considered a fool for looking away from a chuck of silver while a stranger watches, but this was not a normal town. The one thing Jack knew he could count on was the town keeping all the thieves away from his store. Not as though it mattered much to Jack as he would likely do little to stop a criminal at this point in his life.
Seeing Ms. Eva come through the door was a pleasant sight to be sure, with so much blood and filth in this world it was always nice to see someone who appeared to be away from such things. It was likely Eva was picking up the things she would need like she always did, almost a regular she was at this point. She always bought more grocery items than anything else, which he kept stocked just for her as not many other people stopped by for such things at his store. There was another general store on the other side of town, run by an odd thin man who seemed to have one of those faces that held way to many secrets. He went by the name Alexander Cula, or just Mr. Cula to the people who came in his store. Word around was he also sold pharmaceutical items as well, which people said he did so because he was a doctor, but honestly Jack felt the good doctor was spreading that rumor around himself.
"Good day Ms. Jacobdttier, back again I see. I can't say I blame you for not wanting to go to Mr. Cula's place, man gets my skin to crawling at times. Would you like to put this on a tab or take care of it now?" Jack gave the stranger a quick nod showing he had not forgotten him did not wish to be rude to the woman, "How have the children been treating you these days?"

"I appreciate it." Hunter followed the man into the store while giving him a respectful distance. It didn't take long to size this store-keep up; his hands were meant for other things than mending fences and fixing broken odds and ends. Hunter wasn't looking for trouble, not yet anyways, and so he'd do his best not to irritate the local colour.
The Silver was fine quality from what he could tell, but then it didn't have to be the best for his purposes. Speaking of his purposes... "I'm going to make a gift for an old friend." He replied, though his eyes never left the silver. Somewhere in the background of the store he was aware of another shopper and then the sound of a woman's voice. As soon as he heard the feminine lilt he ignored it, focusing on the silver. While the shop-keep attended his other customer, Hunter ran his hands over one of the ingots and then set it down, picking up another for inspection. He'd only need a few for his purposes, but it was better to be prepared.
Soon as he had an estimate of what he wanted, Hunter set the ingots down and turned to look at the shop-keep, waiting for his attention to return to the transaction. Patiently, he turned his thoughts inwards while the pretty girl purchased her groceries and made small talk. Time was no concern to him, after all.

Her green eyes sparkled with a conspiratorial smile, "If you promise not to tell, then I completely agree with you. Mr. Cula and I don't exactly see eye to eye on things. So I would much rather be a welcome patron here at your store then deal with that crotchety old man."
Eva always made sure she had a bright, friendly smile for everyone she met and that included Jack Tompkins, "The children are treating me just fine, Mr. Tompkins. In fact they've all been asking when you'll be coming by again. Apparently this time they want to build chairs for their homes. They were all very excited when you taught them how to build the bird house, so now they want to try something harder."
If she were completely honest with herself, Eva had a small school girl crush on Mr. Tompkins. She would have to be blind not to notice the rugged handsomeness of the man. But it never went anywhere other then friendly smiles and idle chit chat when they saw each other around town. Eva was far from naive and knew their town, and many of the children she taught, were not human - at least not fully. So her choices for courtship were slim if she wanted a full human; thankfully Jack Tompkins had moved to town a few years back. But again nothing had happened.
"I was wondering if you'd pull some of those sweets the school children like. I thought as long as the exam goes well today they might like a treat. And I'll be paying now rather then on tab," offering a sweet smile, she offered him the money and waited for her purchases to be wrapped up. She always tried to pay her purchases immediately rather then putting anything on tab in Silver Pines. People had to make a living, and if she had the ability then she wouldn't hinder anyone. Many people in town called her too sweet to live here, but live here she did.
Turning to the stranger looking at the silver ingots, Eva offered a small apology, "I do apologize for interrupting your purchase. School starts soon, I hope you understand," she glanced at the position of the falling sun to make sure she wouldn't be late, "Are you simply passing through or are you thinking of moving here to Silver Pines?"

As Jack heard the reply from the stranger he could not help but hear the sound of a man looking to get some killing done. He knew the sound well because he had often made such a tone in his voice back in his former life. For a brief moment Jack worried if his old life had finally caught up with him and this man was here to give him this so called "gift". That moment past when the shopkeeper realized a hired gun would not have waited so long and likely not made himself known so casually to the person he aimed to kill.
Also the fact that the man talked about this gift while looking at the silver had Jack understanding it was meant for someone other than of his species. There was another reason Jack kept so much silver in stock as he did, it was because it was easy for one killer to smell the blood on the lips of so many in the town. It had not taken him long to understand something was not right about the people but then once he did he didn't care because they left him alone, and most likely that was the reason so many normal lawmen stayed away. Whatever the reason Jack came into the knowledge about how silver effects so many of the people in the town, ironically enough being the name of the town. The stock of silver made many of the lesser sized townspeople of a predators natures fill uneasy entering his store.
As Eva answered his question Jack turned back and gave her the best smile he was able to make, which was just a grin but for Jack it was something. Mr. Cula...or Doctor as he wished to be called, was one such towns member who always got to sweating when he entered the store, and so he did fill some relief that one of the few normal people had a way to stay away from him. However to Jack he was no better than Alexander Cula just used a different tool to do the job.
The topic of the children wanting him to come back and show them how to build more things was almost a nice idea. He had gone to the school originally as just a kind gesture to show some level of trying to fit in with the towns people but apparently he had sparked something in his visit, and not just with the children he had a feeling. It was a feeling that had Jack worried as he did not want anyone thinking he was someone worth taking the time to get to know. His hands were bloody and he would have to carry that for the rest of his life, but only he should have to carry such a burden as he was the one who had done the deeds.
"I...I will see what I can do. I have just the rock candies right now, I can order others if necessary," once again an item in his store that did not fit except for one customer, "Maybe...if the children do well I'll come by," it was a silly risk but Jack didn't want to be rude but still...
The shopkeeper went about wrapping Eva's things and took her money as she paid, she always paid. Most of the people who came into his shop set up a tab and paid either once a week or once a month depending on what they did or how they were feeling. Jack never made a fuss about it as he did not want any problems, no matter what kind. Jack placed the wrapped things on the counter with Eva's change on top as he waited to see how the stranger would answer.

The woman's voice came to him like a voice outside of water, his own mind submerged in his thoughts, and it wasn't until her question was half-asked that his attention had fallen onto her. She was young for a teacher, or he assumed that was her business at the school. That is, to his knowledge she was. It had been so long since he'd considered the normalcy of school that he was no longer an expert on what was normal. The lateness of the hour, however...
"I have business to attend to while I am here," he answered, both vaguely and honestly, "but it shouldn't take me very long." Hesitating, Hunter then added, "Aren't you afraid to walk in a place like Silver Pines after dark?" His eyes narrowed slightly. If not the town, then whatever monsters that passed for children in that school house at this hour were enough of a danger to a human woman.

"Oh that's too bad. It's always nice to have new people move to town," she smiled sweetly and turned to the counter to gather up her basket. However, she turned around almost angrily, abruptly spilling her items to the soft wood floor at the newcomer's next question. The thuds of her groceries seemed overly loud in her ears as she calmed her anger. Pursing her lips, she painted a very small smile on her lips before looking back at the stranger.
"Why would I be afraid of my home? I've lived here my entire life in this small town and nothing has ever happened. The Mayor makes sure of that," Eva voice while soft, was strong and sure. Kneeling down, she began to lift her purchases back into her basket.
