crates scattered about. One of them is broken open in the scuffle to reveal
several useful items and a pile of supplies is knocked over that could be used
as brawl weapons.

Somebody's stagger knocked over a heap of boxes. Carltis wasn't asking why there was a whip, but he wasn't complaining: he made a dive for it.

Carltis cracked the whip experimentally before turning back to his enemy with a snarl and lashing at his face. "I said get off him!"

That hadn't been hard enough. Of course it hadn't been hard enough; he wasn't a fighter. As he grasped the smoke bomb, Aleck threw a hand up but found his glasses skittering across the floor for the second time today.
Really, really regretting this.

"Worried about your boyfriend?" the wherhandler sneered - he was breathing hard and was well banged up, but his mouth was still working just fine as he caught the whip on his arm. But it still stung, and as it wrapped around his wrist the tip caught- "AGH! My eye!" His hand flew to his face while he doubled over, spouting curses.
