GM > Zaku. They were designed to be. The GM was faster and more mobile than the Zaku in both land and space, had stronger armor, and had better weapons, being the first to have mass produced beam weaponry. All in all, the GM was the superior mobile suit. They even had better pilots too, in my opinion, since many EFF mobile suit pilots were originally fighter pilots, and having had faced mobile suits using a far inferior fighter plane throughout most of the war and surviving, would take a lot of skill and badassery and make them very experienced and battle hardened by the time they enter the cockpit of their GM's.
