Okay, so I'm playing through FFT again, and I need some help with my Party, the plan is five Dragoons again, however I've come across an issue.

So I needed to train Monk levels for each character, and I intend to use Martial Arts as my secondary skill set as it includes revive and Chakra for healing(my party has high bravery and low faith save for Ramza's faith.)

I just got done spamming the plains battle to get First Strike Reaction Ability for my whole team, but it doesn't seem to activate often, in fact it hasn't activated a single time in about five battles. Does First Strike only work against human attacks? I know they all have it equipped, and I know it happened some of the time in my previous all Lancer playthrough, but since I'm going to be using Chakra for healing anyways, and it heals MP, I'm considering using Mana Shield instead for their Reaction Ability. I intend to use Time Mage's Quickness to shorten their Jumps as opposed to using two handed like last time, so maybe I should go the defensive route for Reaction ability as no two-handed means I'm less likely to kill enemies with first strike.

So does anybody have more in depth info about how often First Strike triggers compared to Mana Shield?

Okay, I got this from the Final Fantasy Wiki:

First Strike is a reaction ability. The Monk class learns it for 1,200 JP. It functions like Counter; however, rather than attacking after being hit, the unit using First Strike attacks the enemy preemptively and cancels the enemy's hit. The ability's success rate is affected by the character's Brave level and will work against all uses of the Attack command by units in the character's attack range. Unfortunately, this means that monster abilities will not trigger First Strike unless they are under Frog status, but ranged strikes will, if the character is equipped with a similar weapon.

So considering this I'll end up having a high chance of activation but it still won't activate against monsters...

I found little info on Mana Shield, If it works every time I have Mana and absorbs the entire blow like in Tactics Advance then I think i'm going to go with it.

Okay, Swiftness doesn't apply to Jump So I'm going Draggons
Jump
Martial Arts
Mana Shield
Twohanded
Fly or move +3 if Dragoon's have innate ignore height which I think they do...

I've found that the Blade Grasp ability(not sure if it has the same name in the PSP release) that you learn from Samurai, will always be the best reaction ability to thwart all physical attacks. Granted I've only played the original release on PS1, so they might've changed how well it works on the PSP. On the PS1 it would usually reduce the chances of anyone landing a physical hit down to at least 42%, and that's when it was being used by someone learning to be a Calculator(Arithmatist). If it's a class that is more physical and/or uses a shield, they tend to be around the 18%, or even possibly lower if you have the more epic shields. I think my best was Orlandu with a Kaiser Shield against some goblin in the Deep Dungeon and the hit rate only got as high as a 3% chance when attacking from behind.

Sorry if I ranted, but there's my input.

I am a big fan of monk abilities, but if you are needing guaranteed healing whilst ramping through the story, please PLEASE consider auto-potion. Yes it might get annoying after a while, but it is well worth it. Only carry X-Potions and auto-potion heals you for 150HP each time. It is overkill at times, but you have the money for unlimited. Having characters with high Brave means you can consider these kinds of reaction abilities. I am just looking out for you in case you need a different secondary skill set... say ninja. Everybody loves ninjas! emotion_awesome

Yeah that samurai ability has been renamed but other than that I think it works the same way. I usually single out casters and archers first so I don't have to worry about ranged attacks since First Strike doesn't work in those cases.

I used auto-potion in one of my teams before, not sure which, it can be really useful, but I've gone back to just using First Strike since most story battles have human units anyways. It activates almost every time now that my Brave is in the 80+ range for the party, and even if I don't hit them it still negates their attack.

I'm going to go for the Samurai's two handed again too, wanted to use a slightly different build than my other All Dragoon play through but this one's got amazing offense.

So I dusted off my PS2 and loaded up FFT just to see what what going on in the last play through I was doing.... and it was just sick what I saw. I was in mid-chapter 3 and everyone was level 60+, with all their brave maxed out at 97 and everyone's faith at 92, just enough so that they don't start giving me messages about wanting to leave. On top of that my party was comprised of the following classes. Master Thief, Master Monk(it was Ramza), Master Lancer(Dragoon), Mastered Holy Knight(Agrias), and a Mastered Mediator(Orator I think it is in PSP) At first I was confused cuz they were all purely physical classes, then I realized they're all mastered Calculators(Arithmatists) with math skill as their second ability. Their set up looked like this:

Main class skill
Math Skill
Blade Grasp
Secret Hunt
Teleport

With the only exception being the Mediator who was Mustadio and his second class ability was those of his squire class.

I went to the next story line mission, the battle in the Yaguo Woods, just before the series of fights leading to the end of the chapter, and it was just brutal.... no one stood even a slight chance. I hit everyone with don't act, including Mustadio, by working off height, then hit them all with holy from my next guy and everyone was dead.... including Mustadio ><. In less than a round of combat I wiped out the enemy force of 7 undead things, and one of my own, and not even all my people got to have a turn.

I turned it off cuz I had to go to work, but I think I'm gonna keep playing it tomorrow. xd

Nice! I hear using holy is much better for arithmatics than flare, don't remember why though. Are there any holy-healing equipment items in FFT? I know Excalibur is holy element but can't remember if they have any that give absorption, that would be great for those instances where a team mate is hit.

I believe Excalibur is the only item that absorbs holy. Though there might be a perfume that does it too.... I don't remember.
