Once we have PM/witch battling (aka once we have Puella Magicae and witches), you may sign up to battle a witch! The number of girls permitted in a battle will vary depending on the strength of the witch. That number may increase if a girl in one of the spots requests backup. But remember that a Grief Seed can only go to one girl! Battling witches is less like teamwork and more like a competition. You must get Grief Seeds to stay alive.
