"No, no. Of course not." Neri agreed, nodding to affirm that she never thought Lute would in the first place.

T'rel question came as a surprise to her. Now it was Neri's turn to feel her face grow hot, but once again, with her complexion, it was hard to tell. "Oh, n-no. I never had lessons." she said. "My father taught me, though. He was an excellent singer, finest voice in the Hold. I suppose I inherited it from him." Then T'rel suggested they sing a duet together at the gather, which Neri took as a mere flattery, but blushed even more for it all the same.

Neri looked up curiously as Lute stood up, yet when she planted the kiss on T'rel's cheek, she quickly shifted her eyes and became suddenly very interested in her hands which were resting on her lap. When Lute spoke, Neri looked up again and nodded. "Indeed." She looked at T'rel and smiled affectionately. "So cute." she agreed.

"I agree." Neri said enthusiastically to Lute's comment about the drum. While she was no expert on music, Neri knew enough on many fields to be able to hold up a conversation, and she loved to get the opinions of those who were more knowledgeable than her on a subject. It made life all the more interesting. "If there was an instument that represented Ista, I'd say it was the drums. What about you?" she said, thinking of the rowers in boats, rowing on time to the beat of the drum. She looked over to T'rel's guest playfully, "And if there was an instrument that represented Fort, I'd say it was the Lute. So tell me, Lute. I know you studied at the Harper Hall with T'rel, but were you born there? Where are you from?"

A thought crossed her mind of what she'd be like if she did have a tongue to match the saltiest of sailors. The idea caused Lute to grin. She'd have to keep less upstanding company in all likelihood, or have to not hang around public and crowded places for fear of offending someone, or bringing the ire of some parents who don't want their kids to learn that sort of language. Yeah. She was perfectly fine as she was. She could leave the terrible language for certain company or if she ever found herself in a tavern or something that was okay with it. Not something to do often though. Taverns weren't really her scene.

Lute nodded, approvingly. Duets of any sort were usually okay in her books and Neri did have a quality singing voice. Even without formal training, it would be fun to see her in a duet or with accompaniment.

T'rel reaction got her grinning like all get out and she gave him a gentle nudge. "See? Neri agrees with me," She said while fighting back a light chuckle. "So no need to hide yourself."

Returning her attention to Neri, she smiled. "I agree with you there. Ista's heartbeat lies with drums. There is plenty here to suggest the rhythmic beating likened to drums. The boats, the people working and living, the waves. Heh. Although with all the wind, I'd say a close runner up instrument would be a woodwind. Maybe flute or ocarina." The other woman's play on her name caused her to titter. "No. I was actually born here. My folks moved here from elsewhere and built there lives here. My mom is a weaver and seamstress, and my dad is a beastcrafter with a focus in runnerbeasts and cattle. He's gotten into sheep and goats pretty recently. I was told that I could go into just about whatever I wanted. By nine, I had decided that being a harper was right for me so I found myself a visiting Harper one day and brought him home so that he and my folks could talk. After a good long talk, I was off to Fort to start my apprenticeship." Lute sighed at her reminiscing. "I was a precocious little scamp. I enjoyed my time in the hall greatly and made many a fine friend, a few great ones, but it was nice to come home when I was searched." She flashed T'rel a bit of an easy smile. "Rumith has always enjoyed listening to me play, so I haven't had to sacrifice one love for another. Having a familiar face or two around from the old Hall also has been really nice. I suppose I've been lucky in that aspect. I can still enjoy and participate in my original craft and I've got all the love and companionship I could want with Rumith, the other riders and their dragons, and what family I do have here."

She paused for a moment then looked over to T'rel. "Mm," She began with an upwards nod of her head. "What do you think, O fellow dear Harper friend? What instrument is Ista?"

"You and Neri are biased. R'yn would laugh at me if he caught me blushing like a redfruit. Women folk think it's attractive," he pulled a face. "Cute. 'Oh, he's just being bashful!' 'Look at him blush!' 'Isn't he sweet?'. Shards, if I had a mark for every time a woman--" he shook his head, brushing at his cheeks with a hand as if to actively dispell the heated feel to them.

"While a drum may fit the to do of everyday life, I disagree," T'rel said with a shake of the head. "Ista's people are unique and to put them to the repetitive tones of a drum would be an insult. The bright colors clothing, the variety of people we have here. It calls for an instrument with a variety of sounds. Something that can mimic the sounds of the whistling winds in the coves and weyrs. Something that can mimic the sound of waves crashing on the shores, flitters humming in the distance, dragons humming--" with each word, he strummed a chord on his guitar. "Something that can capture joys and sorrows without sounding like a beaten message on the drum heights. Something that can capture the emotions created by Impression. The fear caused by Thread. The instincts the Istan people have to keep surviving!"

"I don't think all those things could be indicated with a simple drum. Maybe pipes--and a guitar, of course," he grinned. "Fort though--that's different. There's a difference between the Hold, the Hall and the Weyr. I'd say maybe a triangle for the Weyr. A tin-sounding tinkle that resounds for a long while." He wrinkled his nose in distaste. "The Hall's best described the way it is. A group of musicians, teachers, writers working for all of Pern. I don't think there's any set instrument one could name that could describe the Hall. A guitar, lute and pipe playing together--maybe. The Hold--it's best described by this--" he struck up a quick, upbeat tune on his guitar. "Gather, gather! It's gather day! A gather every sunny rest day, and more often when possible."

Neri shrugged her shoulders. She didn't agree with him, but she didn't feel the need to argue. "You've never heard my friend play drums." Was all she said.

With him, the drums were so much more than a dull steady rhythm, they were alive. Just like the island. It seemed like everything came down to some kind of rhythm, from a heartbeat, to the crashing of waves, a dragon's wingbeat, even the sound of a person's gait. That was something Finbar was particularly good at. He could tell what person was coming just by the feel of their footsteps on the ground.

Neri didn't feel like arguing (surprise, I know). That was, until T'rel made the comment about a triangle. She leaned back laughing. "Let me get this straight- you don't think the drums can symbolize Ista, but a triangle is enough for an entire Weyr?"
