I've played through FFT multiple times as I'm sure many of you have and i'm curious, do you tend to make your party based on practicality? Or do you try to go with fun builds that aren't necessarily great and make the game harder?

Do you ever build your party on a roleplaying basis? I always get four generics and give them specific names but I've never gone as far as to imaginarily include them in the plot beyond they're helping Ramza.

It varies on the game. Party building in A2 is different than A, and I haven't played the original Tactics, so it could differ there.

Generally though I ignore archers in favor of spell casters (Except Cannoneer in A2), and have my physical bruisers more utility focus (Fighters and Gladiators in FFTA, how they have an ability for everything under the sun), with one physical bruiser being damage focused (Dual-Wielding Paladin in FFTA).

For spellcasters I usually have a committed Black Mage with either Time Mage secondary or another utility class (depending on race, usually Hume so Ninja or Blue Mage), and a White mage with Blue/Green Magics (Blue Mage with Black Magic if Blue Magic has Angel Whisper/White Wing).

Though in TA I ran a Red mage + Elementalist and Assassin + Sniper pair to simply devastate anything that could be petrified, and Paladin + Fighter and Templar + Dragoon pair to just beat down everything else, in my second run-through.

I generally build for practicality, though I try weird compositions to try and find alternate play styles.

Edit: In A2 I never let Luso be first in the clan, I cycled my other 5 through so I could see their dialouge. About two cities in Clure (My Bangaa ~<3) was the new head of the clan.

My dearest sympathy to the creator of Luso for whatever mental deficiency he/she suffers from. They could have at least let him keep his school uniform, it was a million times better than what he got. Just like in Kingdom hearts when Goofy and Donald are in Guard armor and Wizard attire then they change into regular clothes for the adventure.

Yeah I always used Viera, often two and it was hard to avoid the temptaion of doing a Viera themed party since most of their classes were so bomb.

I just have FFT for ps1 and so i make up characters and try to level them out as much as i can before a major boss fight.

Yeah when I was little and couldn't into tactics very well I was so frustrated by normal encounters being leveled to match my party that I would avoid battles anywhere but the plains. I literally saved, moved, and reset and reloaded if there was a battle elsewhere.

Of course now it's no sweat, but my first play through was like that.

I usually stick with the party that gets me through an area without dying and that allows for optimal strategy based on my skills. Of course with me unlocking classes it changes.
My primary setup is usually something like two knights/monks(or Ramza), one Black Mage, one White mage, one summoner, and a physical ranged character(Archer, Chemist with Guns, et cetera)

In the tactic advanced games I can't say I ever relied too heavily on anything though having to change my character classes often. I can't even recall who I primarily used other than that Red Mage Viera you get for completing a quest.

That sounds like a lot of management but it leaves a lot of options open, and probably makes battles pretty interesting. My last play through I had 5 male Lancers(dragoons) because I love the male armor and it's incredible simplicity, I think I gave them all double hand and or some quicken passive from a time mage skill? So they could jump really fast.

I always use a red mage or two in the advance games, and have recently come to love Blue Mages to deqath, although they take a lot of preparation to master, especially when you have 2-3 of them.

last TA2 playthrough:
Main: Blue mage/paravir dual wielding holy absorbing katana's
2 human characters doing the same as main. Mastered almost all skills and used some dodge counter thing.
2 red mage/summoners with holy absorbing robes and ice absorbing shields with blood magic.

Sometimes I'd use a Gria with ultima shot, wanted a party of 5 Gria but their classes were very limited, and you get them so late in the game. Still torked they didn't make an MMO using all these races.

last Advance playthough:
Main character and human blue mage duel weilders.
Two red mage summoners
An Illusionist.

Yeah, everyone I know IRL quits when they get to that one on one battle with Weigraf I think. I still have trouble with that one because I tend to get tired of training and try to concoct a strategy to get through story battles at the lowest level I can, then I get there and am like Oh shiiiit I forgot....
