I'd recommend trying to watch all the Pre-Avengers movies before proceeding with the Avengers movie itself.
It's pretty sweet just seeing how everything came together.

Hulk, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America. I think that's the proper order of them. I need to rewatch them. I haven't seen them in a while. Though, I didn't find Hulk to be a needed movie when trying to get ready for Avengers. Everything else felt like it had at least a touch of set up for Avengers, but Hulk felt like it's own movie to me. Then they wanted him in Avengers so they added a little cameo at the end.
And Avengers was amazing. I'm looking forward to their second round of movies and the second Avengers. It should be epic. And hopefully they'll add in Spiderman. His movie looks amazing, I can't wait.
