Earth's only moon, called Luna, or simply, the Moon, was damaged in the Astral Gate explosion that left the Earth in such an inhospitable state. When the Gate exploded it blew a large jagged crater in the moon, and the resulting debris has been raining down on the planet below at regular intervals ever since, causing severe damage to the surface. Tidally locked, the satellite rotates exactly once in the same period it takes to revolve around the Earth. This means the same side is always facing the Earth, and the other remains concealed from the planet's surface.

On the far side of the moon there hides a small prefab warehouse concealed by dull grey camouflage. Used as a storage facility by unspecified criminal elements to store arms, contraband, or anything they might need to hide, it is well protected by a few dozen armed criminals, many of whom are wanted by the ISSP in connection with crimes ranging from fraud to murder.

The facility has a large storage warehouse, a hangar airlock capable of housing transport freighters, and connected living quarters for short term habitation.

Besides the criminal elements that inhabit and operate the building, The Count, a systems analyst, computer expert, and financial advisor, also seems to know about the operations. As such, he has advised Captain Reaver of the Athenian of the potential value of the men and material stationed at the base, citing that the removal of unsavory elements would be beneficial to the corporate elements he represents.

In the shady warehouse, a lone thug skulked between shelves and crates. Glancing around to make sure he was alone, he grabbed a nearby crowbar and went to work on one of the crates. He wrenched at the planked lid for a moment before two of the planks pried free. Once one end was free, the planks bent back easily. He set down the crowbar on the edge of the box and peered inside.

"Hey!"

The thug nearly jumped, knocking the crowbar to the floor with a loud clanging that echoed through the cavernous space.

"Most of those are supposed to get picked up in a few days, so hands off," the other thug said to him, walking over.

The first shrugged sheepishly.

"Hey, this isn't what we're supposed handing off, is it?" he asked, returning his attention to the crate and withdrawing its contents. There was only one item, above what seemed to be another lid. It was an old submachinegun.

"They call it a Tech Nine," the other explained morosely.

"Oh! I get it! It's like a calling card!"

"Duh. Even though he's got his name in each of the crate's transponder cards... Dude's got problems."

"It don't sound too smart sticking your name on everything in this business."

"Yeah, but it helps when nobody knows who you really are. You get a name people can remember, and get it out there, suddenly nobody's looking for Joe Whatshisname. Guys probably a banker outta Venus or something, some random schmuck. Nobody will be looking for a banker, they'll be looking for some inked up gunrunner just cause his name has a ring to it."

"I guess that makes sense."

"Now shut that up, nobody minds us grabbin' a few, but they don't want all their boxes busted into. Remember which one you opened. In a few days, the ship will show up, and we keep 'em in the hangar until we see the cash, then we help 'em load up. No fuss."

The thug threw his own machinegun over his shoulder and turned to leave. The first scooped up the Tech Nine for himself before returning everything to its proper place and heading back to his quarters.

The shattered moon lie empty, an expanse of nothingness long since ignored, abandoned, and forgotten... -_-
