Aaron fell to the ground with a thud. He blew his hair out of his face, and looked around when he heard a familiar voice. "Arete? Hey there!" Aaron grinned and turned red. He sat back up and started fooling with his shoes. "What am I doing? Uhh-- Well I went to the cafeteria to find Yue, and it turned out he was about to get skewered by the chef, but I calmed them down, and then the chef said that I could bring some food back to the jungle if I could catch one of these multi-colored bunnies that are hopping around the forest, and well--" Aaron looked at the Muse. "I guess you see how well that turned out... What are you doing out here, anyway?"

Arete blinked innocently and then took a bite out of a red apple in his hand. In the other he held a straw sack overflowing with food. "Oh, I'm here collecting some food supplies from the cafeteria." He answered simply enough. "Honestly I never expected you two to work so hard for it. I just thought you'd provide the distraction I needed to make my move." He grew a mischievous smile, reveling in his own brilliance before adding. "Not that I didn't have any faith in you two or anything..."

Aaron knocked the dust off his pants and looked at the Muse as he chomped into the apple. There was a moment of tense silence, and then Aaron cracked a smile and started giggling. "Oh" was all he could manage to say. He nodded his head several times, and clapped his hands together. "Well... I suppose that makes sense then! You got the supplies then?" Aaron looked off in the direction that the bunnies had run off, deciding that it wasn't worth his time to chase them.

Arete gave a simple but cheerful nod as he slung the sack over his shoulder. "Yup yup. So as far as I'm concerned, you passed your test. Good work. I realize you still have a life here, so feel free to take a little time off and enjoy yourself. I'll be back at my trailer whenever you're ready to pick up training again." He smiled and then added. "There's more life here than I remember. Don't be in a rush to abandon it, ok?" With that the Muse gave his signature salute of farewell, and started heading back to the jungle.

Aaron watched as the Muse went back toward his home. Aaron felt like he'd achieved something, even though he'd really only managed to serve as a distraction. He figured this would be a good time to meet back up with Del and Alex, so he turned to head back toward the dorms. Something caught his eye, though. In a flowerpot, there was a small multi-colored egg. Aaron picked up the rainbow-striped egg, and wiped the dirt off of it. . .

The egg cracks and something pops out...

The shell falls away and you find a single clip of pistol ammo inside. And hear I thought finding gun ammo in random breakable objects only happened in video games!

Aaron looked at the clip of ammo in his hand. What on Earth? Aaron looked around to see if he could find another egg. Could this have been the result of the bunnies from earlier? It seemed like some sort of bizarre Easter plot that was thought up while a couple of college students were waiting in a parking lot for a friend. . .

Aaron found another egg, just like the first, in a hat. . .

What the hell is going on? Pistol ammo doesn't just pop out of eggs. . .Am I being punked? Aaron continued to look around. He checked some more flower pots. He Ran over toward the forest where the bunnies had run off. Nothing. Aaron looked around, trying to see if there was someone around watching and laughing at him. There were security cameras pointed to various places around the square. So I am being watched. Go figure. . . Aaron was about to give up when he walked by the wooden stage that was set up in the square. The stage was just at eye-level, and right in the knot of one of the wooden planks, there was a small, rainbow-striped egg. Aaron rolled his eyes, and pulled himself up onto the stage.

It felt good to be on the stage. He looked around into the square and thought to himself about how awesome it would be to perform to a crowd here. Maybe I'll try to get students to a concert out here. That would be a good way to make some more friends, at least! Aaron bent over and picked up the last egg. He cupped it in his hands and waited for it to hatch open to reveal another clip of pistol ammo. . .

Aaron was so shocked, that he barely felt the pain of the talons digging into his skin. He felt his feet get pulled off the ground, and watched as the ground melt shank away below him. Despite the sense of terror that he should have been feeling, Aaron couldn't help but smile and wonder if this was what it was like to fly. . .

Aaron returned to the center of campus, and looked around warily, juts to make sure there were no stray pterodactyls around. Satisfied that the place was empty, he cracked open the book and started studying. It was rough work, but he managed to decipher the material (the pictures helped). He set himself to practice.

[1/8]Aaron had known the basics for a very long time. Some of his initial training with the Aboriginals was with unbalanced pole-arms, and the ax style was not too terribly different. The head of the pole was just heavier, that was all.

[2/8]Aaron began by holding his new steel ax above his head. According to the manual, an ax wielder needs to recognize the weapon as an extension of his body. It wasn't an extra arm, but instead, it was a way to increase the length and capabilities of one's own arm.

[3/8]He twisted the ax so that the ax head would point straight up in the air. Aaron held the ax with both hands raised over his head. He then began to balance on one foot.

[4/8]His logic was that, if he could raise both hands over his head and keep balance, then the addition of the ax should not affect that balance. He held the pose for five minutes before switching to the other foot. He kept up the balancing act until he was sure that his balance would remain unaffected in that way.

[5/8]Next, Aaron held out the ax in his dominant hand with both arms outstretched, parallel to the ground. Normally, this would be easy, but the added weight of the weapon would make it more difficult. Aaron kept practicing this form of balance for twenty minutes before switching hands.

[6/8]Feeling comfortable with the weight of the weapon, Aaron began to swing the ax around in circles. He swung it in full arcs and in half-arcs, just to get a feel of how precisely he could stop the ax. In this way he practiced his reach and his chop.

[7/8]He followed this exercise up with a practice of some of his older techniques. He practiced his Vault. While in the air, he moved from a Vault into a Downward Blow.

[8/8]Aaron stopped the ax before it hit the ground, and then righted himself to a vertical stance. He flipped the ax around and caught it by its head, and then flipped it again to catch the end of the arm. He flipped the ax over his shoulder and expertly into his holster. He was ready now to start learning the skills.

After a short break, Aaron began to work his way through the various techniques.

[1/4]The book described ways a wielder could channel his ki into the weapon. This made sense to Aaron, since the weapon was meant to be an extension of himself. He began by concentrating on his ki pool.
[2/4]He reached into the azure depth of his internal chakra. He felt as the energy flowed from the ocean of ki near his center and toward his arms. As he did so, he could feel the ki move visibly into the axe.
[3/4]The axe itself began to glow with a faint blue-ish tint. For the first technique, he would be learning an advanced stage of his older skill, axe block. He held up his axe, and readied himself with a grounded stance.
[4/4]He thought about the axe as a defensive tool. He held it forward and concentrated on the head. It flashed for a second, creating a sort of buffer-zone around its edge. Aaron smiled at his success.

[1/4]Aaron moved from there into preparation for his next skill. He ran to the edge of the square and grabbed several small rocks. He made a pile of them near his feet.
[2/4]Aaron continued to concentrate on the flow of ki. It was cycling from his pool to the ax, and back into him, as though he and the weapon were of one body. He picked up a rock as tossed it high into the air.
[3/4]As the rock fell, Aaron realized that if he did not strike hard enough, he would only succeed in knocking the rock a distance. Additionally, his blow would have to be precise. He heaved the ax to the side and readied himself to swing.
[4/4]It was as if the rock fell in slow motion. At the precise moment, Aaron threw his weight into the ax and swung. It cleaved through the rock, but also left Aaron slightly unbalanced. I'll have to keep that in mind if I ever need to use this skill. . .

[1/4]The rock was in pieces on the ground, though, so Aaron felt full of confidence. He was picking up these skills rather well, and his reading issue hadn't been a problem. Manuals are just guides. Experience is so much better
[2/4]This time, Aaron grabbed a handful of the rocks. He knew that there was no way he would hit them all if he just tossed them together, but he was very interested to see how many he could hit. All at once he threw them up into the air.
[3/4]As the began to fell, Aaron looked around, trying to see how many of them were falling on the same parallel axis. He counted seven together that he thought he could hit with the Wide Swing technique. He readied himself as he had done with the last technique and waited to strike.
[4/4] Wait. Wait. There! Aaron swung the axe out until he was holding the end of the pole with his hand, and gave a mighty swing across the axis of falling stones. He could feel the ki in the weapon move centrifugally toward the axe-head, and against the stones. With a few tinks, the pebbles hit the ground. 6 were halved, and one was quartered.

Aaron decided that that would be a good resting point, so he decided to head back toward the cafeteria for something to eat.
