Chester laughed as too stood up at the departure of the humans. Isis seemed to be very impressed with their appearance, and he endeavored to answer her questions. "It's hard to say with humans, if they even take mates, but I suppose it's possible. Yes, the one standing guard was a male and the other a female. She was gathering water in that container, to take back to the others. They have a small group that lives not far from the river, through the trees. As for our safety, as I said earlier, I have not heard of them harming any of our kind, but I am not ready to test that theory." She seemed very animated, and he found that very appealing in her. There was something about this female that got his blood flowing hot through his veins. "Tell me Isis, would you like to stay here tonight? There is more than enough room in my cave for the two of us, and I can assure you, no harm will come to you under my watchful eye."

Her imagination was running rampant as she listened to Chester's answers to her questions. Part of her wanted to cross the river and investigate these new creatures more closely, but she was also somewhat afraid to do so on her own. She was still pondering this idea when Chester offered his cave as a safe haven for the night. Stay with him? What did she even know about him? He seemed nice enough, and he was certainly charming and handsome as males went. He'd been nothing but nice to her so far, which was more than she could say for some of the males back home. Most of them simply took whatever female tickled their fancy, whether they wanted to mate or not. But Chester was a different sort of Voronwe, and Isis found him to be very amiable. "I would like that Chester. Thank you for the offer. I had no idea where I was going to spend the night. I probably would have spent it under a tree somewhere."

"Well then," he said, "I am glad I made the offer. For I could not bear to think of you sleeping out under a tree all by yourself. Come, follow me and I will show you the way to my home." He turned and headed back in the direction of the lake. "So tell me Isis, do you have any other family? Did you leave anyone behind when you left your home?" His question was asked in such a way as to surreptitiously discover if she had a mate back home. He was pretty sure she didn't, because what male in his right mind would ever let one as beautiful as Isis leave him? Family though, that was a different matter. If she had family back home that were not happy with her leaving, they might come south, and try to force her to go back. As soon as this possibility entered his head, he knew he would fight for her if she decided to stay. No one, not even her family, was going to take her from him if she did not want to leave.
