Not 100% sure if this is where this topic should go, but here we go...
What is going on with The Academy? When I requested to join this Guild I was super excited that this section was part of the group, but when I went over to check it out I notice that the most recent posting was way back in Februray... And that some haven't had anything for over a year. Is there something that I am missing out on, or another way to get these classes?

Originally many of the topics now marked [guide] were classes, however stuff happened that caused the teachers to stop teaching them, I suspect there were a few cases like my own where students simply stopped interacting with it, and the class just pittered out. I also suspect that if there were a collection of students that want to take a class the teacher might decide to reopen it. but for want of students the academy is in a hibernative state.

What I've noticed in a lot of Gaia, is that so many people don't take such things seriously, and so you'll get "teachers" who will start up a class, thinking it's fun to play school, but then they get bored and wander off to do something else. Same for students, they start out being interested, but because they see Gaia as a game, they don't keep up with assignments. So even when you might have serious students and teachers, it's the ones that aren't that kind of ruin it for everyone else.
From a teacher's perspective, it takes a lot of work to type up material and put together lesson plans, and when you can't get anyone to actively participate, it gets to the point where you have to stop wasting your time, and move on to something else that is more productive.

Yeah, that all makes pretty good sense. Just coming into the Guild I wasn't quite sure what was going on with it. It's too bad that the classes sort of died out, in my opinion at least, since learning is a continual process.
Has there been any thoughts on how to get people more interested in the classes once again?

We have tried to get classes moving, but it's very difficult. The hardest thing at first is finding a teacher who's reliable, and also able to teach. Getting students is easy, but getting students who interact with the class is another thing. Plus teaching is pretty difficult. I tried to teach a Japanese class and immediately found out how difficult it was to teach over the internet.
We keep all the old classes up there as guides to read through, and if you need help you can always post in the forums to ask. There's plenty of nice people on here who will answer your queries and give information smile

Maybe we could try a test run, to see if the academy could do well this time with all the new members?

Bloody Rosen Knight Maybe we could try a test run, to see if the academy could do well this time with all the new members? The problem with that would be the dual nature of the academy, it isn't just about new members who want to learn, it is also about people who have specialized knowledge who want to teach. Maybe I misunderstand what you mean by test run, but I think you meant that a few classes would be open and accepting students. And the classes go on and see if students maintain interest in the class. You would require teachers who are knowledgeable and want to teach those classes. That is a major investment on the teacher's part (making classes, planning lessons, answering student questions etc.) and (speaking for myself) it kinda sucks when you put all that effort into a class that pitters out after a few lessons. Also bear in mind that it is also a commitment by the student to actually take the class, make time to do the related work, etc. people's lives are strange and hectic, so it is difficult for some students to schedule crunch classes, with the rest of their life. I have a possible idea as to what might (stress might) make teachers more inclined to teach. I know at least I would appreciate it. If there could be a thread for class requests. that way prospective teachers could get an idea how many students would be interested in a given subject. Transversely a prospective teacher could post a brief summery of a class they are considering teaching to see if anyone is interested. This is just a thought, but I think it might help stimulate the academy's revival, and I can't think of anyone that would be negatively effected by it. *sorry if my writing seems a bit garbled atm sweatdrop *

I love to learn, and also to share what i learn too, so thats why I want to help revive the academy ><
