Nephrite was close to finishing off her usual garden round, which she always took care of once the sun had set properly and could no longer bother her. It had been gray and overcast all day and due to the frequent rain showers she did not need to water the plants this time. While some gardeners might consider themselves lucky, Nephrite was less than pleased. Rain inevitably meant she'd come in contact with mud and get dirty no matter how hard she tried to retain her pristine appearance. What worse, the mud liked to cling to her, no matter how often she tried to phase it off. Unfortunately, there'd been plenty of weeding to do.

She had donned her gardening outfit, of course – a simple yukata with a flower pattern, the sleeves tied back to be out of the way, and then a cute apron, both easy to wash – but it still bothered her immensely and she found herself looking forward to be soaking in a nice, hot, scented bubble bath. Especially as it had just started to rain again. Nephrite's eyes narrowed with annoyance.

'Amon, didn't the forecast say-' She started complaining but broke off when she noted her guardian seemed to have fallen asleep. She didn't push it, even though she very much wanted to rant about the nasty weather to him.

What with the frequent nightmares that plagued her guardian she was grateful for every time he was able to sleep peacefully. So instead she hurried into the greenhouse for shelter, her last stop anyway before she could go back inside. And have her bath. And then maybe light a stick of incense or two to make Amon's sleep even more peaceful and rested and snuggle up to him for a little. Yep, that did sound like a nice plan.

Diligently the young fiend took care of the greenhouse plants, all the while the rain was steadily growing stronger, countless drops drumming a staccato against the glass panes. It was kinda nice, she figured, and even calming – as long as you weren't outside and the weather ruined your hair. She liked the scent of rain and moist earth.

Her momentary calm and peace of mind, however, was promptly disturbed when her gaze fell upon the strange tiny bright green specks on the stems and leaves of one of her most treasured herbs. Only, these actually weren't tiny specks.

These were bugs.

Nephrite did exactly what all little girls did when faced with bugs.

She screamed.

Amon woke up with a start, feeling completely disoriented. Several seconds ticked by with him blinking confused at the unfamiliar before he eventually realized just where he was – in the living room, on the flokati rug. Eh, fell asleep on the couch again …

And, apparently, he'd fallen off the couch, thanks to Nephrite's little banshee scream. His ears, metaphorically speaking, were still ringing. He wasn't overly worried though, it had been a disgusted shriek of rage rather than fear. Instead he swore quietly when he discovered his tablet on the floor next to him, screen black. Right, he'd been reading ... Fortunately the screen lit up promptly when he touched it, the device merely having been on standby.

Amon breathed a sigh of relief. It was brand new, and he'd already been forced to return it to the store thrice – once because Nephrite had dropped it, and twice because it had been … overheating. Uh. After what Athan had told him he very much hoped it was a problem of the model and nothing … he himself might be causing. Nah ... In any way, it would have sucked to have to bring it to the store again.

'Amonnnnnnnn …' Nephrite whined unhappily, floating in through the wall from the patio since he hadn't come outside yet. 'There's bugs on my plants,' she complained in a whiny voice. 'Lots and lots and lots of nasty, tiny green bugs!'

Oh. That. I knew I'd forgotten something. “Aphids, yes. I saw them when I checked on the garden earlier today. They're on my tomatoes too. I wanted to call Jasa about them, but couldn't reach her right away and then forgot.” He shrugged.

'You saw bugs on my plants and didn't do anything about them?!' Nephrite glared at him with her best outraged 'how DARE you' expression.

“You said it. Your plants.” Amon shrugged, indicating that he felt anything but responsible for Nephrite's herbs, as rare and excotic they might be. “However, I'll call Jasa to see what to do about the bugs on my vegetables – tomorrow. Maybe I'll share the wisdom.” First and foremost, however, he wanted to go back to sleep as soon as possible, thank you.

'But … Amon!'

Her guardian merely smirked. “Go take a bath, Neph, there's dirt all over you.”

There was another shriek of rage, the sound of several doors being slammed, and then – except for the faint sensation of Nephrite still seething in the back of his mind – all was peaceful and quiet again. For now.

Amon sighed and gathered up his things. It had become fairly obvious by now that he was sharing his home with an oversensitive teenager girl now – even if she still looked kinda small and ... flat. He grinned. Still way more of a child than a woman. But, she'd certainly developed a notable interest in makeup and manicure as of late, stubbornly staring at her fingers for however long she could keep up her focus (not very long) in the attempt to make herself grow fingernails.

He poured the remainder of his long since cold tea into the sink and dumped whatever was left of his snacks into the trash before he put cup and bowl into the dishwasher. He was far from being a neat freak, but he preferred keeping things tidy and organized. If you didn't it would come back to bite you, usually when in a hurry because something had come up.

Feeling quite content with himself and the world for now, Amon stepped out onto the patio, lighting a cigarette as he went. He liked rain, the scent of moist soil and green things growing, as long as he was someplace dry and sheltered. He leaned forward, propping his elbows on the railing as he smoked. Weather like this, he might be able to harvest his first homegrown vegetables within a matter of days. Maybe in time even for Athan's visit. Even though he usually did his best to avoid the magic-user for obvious reasons, he still saw him on a regular base, since he kept having to drop of Nephrite with him. And it hadn't quite escaped him how gaunt the man looked.

He just couldn't help it, he had been trained to pick up stuff like this, appearance, body language and all.

And, a little more in the know now about that man's past, it was of little wonder to him. "Wouldn't want to bear your burden ..." Amon murmured darkly, flicking off some of the ash into darkness and rain, decision made. He definitely wouldn't allow for Athan to leave without a proper meal. If he had to, he'd even leave out the chilis.

Which made him wonder, was his love for hot food possibly related to this 'element' crap as well? Ever since Athan had struggled to explain to him about it, Amon kept noticing little things here and there, second-guessing everything. It was driving him nuts. Mostly because it made it look as if Athan had been right about just about everything he'd told him.

Amon gave of a disgruntled: "Bah!" and pushed out his cigarette in the ashtray (not a neat freak) about to return inside when ... he heart a strange skittering noise, just barely audible over the rain.

(( 4 = they eat something 8D ))

He stared into the darkness, his brows creasing into a frown. Bugs, salamanders, fairies and now what – rats? He hoped not. He didn't need any more pests around.

A tiny pair of pale-white beady eyes stared back at him. He might have missed out on it if it hadn't been for their eery luminosity. In a way it was similar to how cat eyes reflected light, yet entirely different. And right before his eyes, with a weird disturbing sound like fabric being torn it split in two.

Two.

There were two pairs of eyes looking at him now. With a sinking feeling Amon moved to flick on the patio lights – usually he kept them off because of the mosquitoes, which reminded him … He'd been wanting to talk to Neph about doing something useful with her skills for a change, certainly she could come up with some sort of mosquito repellant? All the while he never took his eye from the strange little … whatever they were.

There was an annoyed screech as soon as the light was on, and for a moment he could spot a tiny silhouette shaking a fist at him before it skittered to hide in the darkest corner with its companion. Twin. Whatever. While he could not make out any words that made sense in the gibberish they spoke, it certainly had the tone of someone ranting and complaining.

In any way, they meant trouble. Amon groaned, what was it with him attracting all sorts of these supernatural creatures?! Slowly he backed away, back into the kitchen. If he got the door and the windows locked in time, maybe …

Amon quickened his retreat when, before his very eye, the eery little creatures split in two again. Both of them. Amon cursed inwardly. If they kept doing this … he didn't need to be great at math to know this meant trouble, no matter how small these weird creatures were. He'd noticed their teeth.

Nephrite, are you alright?

Nephrite quirked first one, then both of her delicate, brush-stroke like brows. She had just finished filling the tub almost to the brim with steaming hot water, dropping in not one, but several bath bombs. Some for the foam, some for the scent and then some for the color. The scented ones she'd made herself.

She was much inclined to ignore Amon, as he had been Not Nice to her, but it was so rare for him to utilize their bond for communication, it usually meant something was up.

'I'm fine,' she said eventually, swishing her hand around in the hot water to make everything mix Just Right.

Then do me a favor and quit soaking now and make sure all windows on your side are closed.

The fiend's inky black brows pulled down in a frown. 'I haven't even started soaking yet,' she declared. And nothing was going to keep her from doing so. Swish-swish, splish-splash. 'Go close the windows yourself.' Splash-splish. Yes, that was looking just fine. She didn't care about what was troubling her guardian this time. Knowing his paranoia, it probably was nothing.

KER-PLUNK!

Nephrite squeeped in surprise, rubbing the hot foamy water she'd gotten spilled with out off her burning eyes. What … had that been?! It was hard to see anything in the foamy tub now, but after some feeling around she got hold of something that did not belong there, her frown ever deepening. Where had this strange metal grate come from?

Slowly, her gaze wandered upwards, towards the ventilation shaft. Uh-oh. 'Forget about the windows,' she said. 'I think it's a little late for those.'

Eyes wide Nephrite watched on with morbid fascination how the little creature clambered inside. It was kinda cute, really, especially with the way it incessantly chattered to itself, as if cheering itself on.

She still thought it was cute when it huffed at her, pointing at the black rectangle of the ventilation shaft and made a gesture as if wiping sweat of his forehead.

Nephrite nodded in agreement. The climb down must have been exhausting for a creature so so small, but she had been too distracted just watching to actually think of helping.

When the inky black creature huffed at her again, and kicked one of her perfume flasks off the bathtub rim, cute stopped.

Nephrite darted to catch the flask in time, but her fingers were still wet and soapy, so it slipped right through and shattered on the tiled floor. Speechless, Nephrite stared at the mess of colorful shards and fragrant oil.

'That … was not a nice thing to do …'

The inky black creature merely cackled and pointed, and then skittered along the enameled rim of the tub to escape her wrath. It was distracted, however, by the bowl of bath bombs she'd decoratively set in the corner. Curiously the imp sniffed, and then rubbed it's tummy, as if to say these smelled tasty.

Nephrite stopped her pursuit and stared. Oh no, it wasn't really going to try …

The creature opened its mouth wider than it should actually have been possible, and took a hearty bite out of a vanilla scented ball bigger than its head, swallowing it whole.

Amon took note of Nephrite's comment with a sinking feeling, wondering for but only a moment just what it meant before he slammed the door shut and promptly turned the key in the lock. He'd left all keys stuck in their according locks, exactly for reasons like this one. He moved to the window, but-

Damn it, they're fast.

Two were on the counter still, chattering in their strange gibberish as if discussing something, whereas the other two already had gone exploring the spice rack, turning over this jar and that. It didn't take long for the first to come tumbling down, spilling its aromatic contents on the kitchen tiles.

Slowly, Amon backed away, his heart beating wildly but at the same time feeling somewhat silly for being so afraid. They were tiny. There were only four of them. He'd handled the fairies (sort of, it was more of a very fragile truce), he'd handled the salamanders (also sort of – at least they seemed to have grasped now they were not permitted to enter the house unless it was freaking cold out), he could handle these. Hoping he wouldn't be noticed, he slowly reached for where the frying pans hung from their rack, for the heavy, cast iron one.

The two imps on the counter seemed to have finished their conversation (if it was actual speech at all, Amon wasn't sure of it) and now started to investigate their surroundings as well, turning this over and that, and-

“Oh no, don't you little freaks dare touch my cell.” However, it was too late. One of the goblin-like creatures picked up his cell which had been charging on the counter, opened its mouth wide and … CRUNCH

Enough was enough. Amon brought down the frying pan, squishing the creature without remorse.

Nephrite stared aghast at the small shadowy creature which had just devoured one of her favorite bath bombs. Well, part of it. The imp returned her gaze with its strangely luminous eyes, and then burped, releasing a soap bubble floating up into the air. Both, the shadow imp and Nephrite followed the bubble with their gaze until it burst eventually, equally surprised. Nephrite regained her composure first. Sort of.

'How dare you,' she snarled, lunging at the hideous little thing, her delicate fingers curled into claws. The imp just barely escaped, skittering along the rim of the bath tub only to stop at the corner and peer upwards, giving off some of its excited gibberish and motioning with its tiny hands to where the ventilation duct was.

Waitwhat.

With a sinking feeling Nephrite gazed up, only to discover a pair of luminous beady eyes was staring back at her. And another. And another.

'Amonnn …?' she sent her thoughts at her guardian in a whine. 'I think we've got a real problem.'

“Don't you tell me,” Amon muttered, observing with growing horror as the inky black shadow creature he'd just squished into a puddle came back to life like T-1000 in Terminator 2. Only, T-1000 didn't duplicate while doing this.

Nephrite was equally horrified as she watched imp after imp pour out of the ventilation shaft. That was, until she heard something crash down next door. Eyes wide she twirled around. That … had come from her dressing room.
