User ImageThe sun was just beginning to set on the neutral territory between Redwood and Kells Forest. Nibbling on some the sparse vegetation, the rabbit was blissfully ignorant of the much larger, much darker, and decidedly more carnivorous creature lurking just a little ways away. A very hungry creature that was most interested in granting a quick and bloody demise to the soft, furry little rodent.

The she-wolf crept closer, inching nearer and nearer to her prey. She hunkered down, almost within striking distance when suddenly the rabbit straightened up at attention and dashed off, disappearing into the distance, no doubt heading to the safety of its burrow.

Coyote growled in displeasure and turned a disconcerting, bi-colored glare on the source of the rabbit's fear, debating whether she was annoyed enough to strike.

Soot let out a loud yawn as he leisurely walked along. Having no sense of direction, he just let his paws take him to wherever they pleased. He had eaten a squirrel a few paces back and was now itching for a nice run... or nap. Either of those would do for him. Maybe a run and then a nap? A nap and then a run? Soot pondered what seemed to him as a large conundrum as he unknowingly stepped right into a bush.

Letting out a yelp, he fell face-forward into the foliage. He heard the sound of rushed skittering feet, most likely a rabbit, and mentally sent out an apology for destroying what was probably the rabbit's home. Groaning, Soot pulled himself out of the bush, shaking twigs and leaves from his fur.

Shaking his head left and right, he paused to see a dark female with bi-colored eyes much like his glaring at him. He shook out his fur one final time before turning to her with a grin.

"Hi!"

...hi? Did he really just say hi, of all things? With a smile? Right after he scared away her dinner? Oh, but he was an impudent male, and impudence should be dealt with swiftly and with great clarity.

"Wolf," she began, strongly considering leaping upon the male and attacking him despite her dislike of pain; after all, he would be the one in pain, not her.

"Your clumsiness chased away my meal. What do you intend to do about it?" Apparently, her hunger and irritation had also tarnished Coyote's silver tongue.

Soot blinked.

"My name is Soot, not 'Wolf'" he smiled. "You must have mistaken me for someone else. I'm sure you've run across a lot of dark wolves before," He wagged his tail a bit.

"As for your meal..." Soot thought to himself for a few seconds, debating internally about whether or not to offer his hunting prowess. Eh, what could it hurt?

"I could always find you another rabbit" He sent her a grin. It was the least he could do for scaring the female's food away, even if it was an accident.

Coyote's lips curled back in a silent snarl at this male's continued impertinence. Was he doing it on purpose, or was he truly that dense? Whichever was the case, the she-wolf found that she did not care. He was still being incredibly irritating and she was most certainly not in the mood to tolerate it.

When he made his offer, she was skeptical at best. Was one so clumsy even capable of hunting? Well, he looked well-fed enough, so perhaps he had at least a modicum of skill, but that was hardly the point. Somehow, Coyote knew that it would be in her best interest to send him away right now, preferably forcefully.

However, some part of her would not allow that. He had scared her prey away, so it was only right that he take responsibility and find her a new meal. It was only fair...not that she was liable to leave it at that, but it was at least a start.

"Very well, wolf," she agreed, easing up a little, but still far from calm and relaxed. "You may find me a new meal."

Soot wrinkled his nose. He wondered if the female was partially deaf for the fact that she continued to address him as this 'Wolf' person. Not wanting to insult her if she was disabled, he let it go.

Sticking his nose into the air to scent the wind, he gave her another lazy grin.

"I'll be back with your food in no time, Princess," He had no idea what to call her, since she hadn't introduced herself, so he just gave her a cute name that came to his head. Females liked cute names.

With that, he loped through some foliage and followed the trail of the rabbit he had scared off moments before.

Coyote stared after him with a disbelieving expression. Had he really just called her princess? Oh, yes. There was little doubt in her mind now that this male was not the sharpest fang of the set. Not by any means.

Her ear twitched.

When he got back here, he would be very lucky to get away again unscathed. In fact, he might be better off running away now, while he still could. Then again, she would then be obliged to chase him and be twice as hard on him for causing her the extra trouble.

Soot sniffed along the ground, following the scent of the rabbit. He wondered if the female would actually wait for him or just wander away. He had little experience with females, especially a female as silent as this one.

Coming to stand beside a copse of trees, Soot paused. Scenting the air quietly, he eyed a hollowed out tree a small distance away.

"Hello, rabbit," he whispered, stalking his way towards his prey. The rabbit thought itself safe, in the corner of the hollowed out tree, but it had unknowingly trapped itself. With a howl, he dove at it, skidding so that his upper body slid into the hole within the tree. Chomping the rabbit between his jaws, he delivered it an instant death and grinned. The female would be happy. Pushing himself backwards with his paws within the tree, Soot encountered a problem when trying to slide his shoulders out. Pushing against the aged bark, he realized that he was stuck.

"Well," he mumbled around the rabbit corpse. "This is a problem"

Coyote was growing impatient. Just how long did it take to catch a rabbit, anyway? It was not that difficult a task. Then again, given the male's obvious inferior intelligence, it could prove to be too much for him. Perhaps he had fallen off of a ravine in his attempt.

Pondering this distinct possibility, the female decided that she would not be objectionable to the idea. However, it would be inconvenient if he had indeed gotten himself killed before delivering her her dinner. While his death would not trouble her, he should at least pay her back for his clumsiness before he died.

Really. This was ridiculous. She was not going to wait around for a dead wolf. It would really be for the best if she knew for certain how he had met his demise, so she could decide whether it was in such a manner as to make up for her lost meal. That decided, the dark female set off to find him.
