He walked into the Captain’s room, feeling the serenity of the place, untouched as it had been. Closing the doors behind him, he remained stationary as he used his spiritual sense to recognize what was now his room. It was simple in its design, with open doors across from him that smelled of nature and felt like they lead to sunlight. Moving forward, he stepped around slowly, feeling the space of the room for anything to watch out for. His sandaled foot touched the leg of a low table, and his other tapped what seemed to have been a cushion. Seating. The previous captain had gone for tranquil simplicity, and Koetsu had to admit that he liked the design. The blind shinigami made his way to the doors opposite of the entrance, where he stepped outside and felt the sunlight fall upon him. He took a few minutes to stroll around, noticing the small, still pond and the trees that smelled so wonderful. He wished that he could see this garden, but he couldn’t go against his vow so easily.
Returning to his office and shutting the doors behind him, he removed his captain’s cloak and hung it near the entrance to the room. He took a seat on one of the cushions near the low table, and placed his zanpakuto, Shoujin, on said table. Taking a deep breath, he placed his hands on his zanpakuto, summoning his spirit to speak with him. A man covered in monochrome armor had appeared in the blackness of his blindfolded eyes, smiling in triumph of sorts. The man crossed his arms as Koetsu’s mind shifted and changed into his zanpakuto’s inner world. A vast, endless ocean, with the night sky full of stars and a beautiful reflective moon that floated solemnly within the air. The man, Shoujin, had stood on the dark ocean’s surface, his hair billowing but silent. Koetsu slowly descended from the sky of his inner world, coming to a landing halt once his sandals touched the ocean’s surface. There, he lacked the blindfold that he always wore, and his steel blue eyes were the only color in Shoujin’s otherwise monochromatic inner world. Koetsu, took a seat onto the surface, crossing his legs and smiling at his zanpakuto spirit. Shoujin had done the same, but when it had sat, the ocean rippled and gave off the sound of a raindrop hitting the water with each ripple.
Koetsu spoke first, his voice calm, but laced with excitement and accomplishment. It was somewhat deep, with a hint of youth inside. “We did it, Shoujin. All of our hard work has payed off; I’m a captain now and I couldn’t have made it here without your help.” Shoujin nodded his head, giving the sound of a pin dropping onto a steel floor. He held his hand out with a thumbs up, and began to speak, his voice much more deeper and imposing, shaking the sky with each word. “Yes Koetsu, you have succeeded. I may have helped but it was your diligence that got you here. Remember that.” The two remained silent for a few seconds, staring at each other wordlessly. Only then did Shoujin speak a second time, increasing the ripples in the ocean underneath them.
“So what are you doing to do now that you’re Captain, Koetsu?”
“I want to meet the other Captains, and see if I can find a Lieutenant. I spent ten minutes in my office and I already feel lonely.”
“A good choice. Sitting in here won’t accomplish your desire, so why don’t you go ahead and get going.”
“Alright, Shoujin. I wish you were more subtle when you kick me out of here.”
He said his last sentence with a smirk as everything returned to the blackness of his blindfolded eyes. He stood, returning his zanpakuto to his waist and moving towards the exit of his captain’s room. He put his haori back on, and smiling, exited his office to explore and meet new people.
“Looking to be off to a great start, Shoujin.”
