So, for these past few months, I had, without really thinking about it, been going fluoride free. For most of my life I'd just use the little sample tubes the dentist hands out every visit, and gotten remarks like "excellent, healthy teeth" and I went 21 years with no cavities or any real oral health issues.

For the past few months I've been using burt's bees all natural toothpaste, which does not have any fluoride in it. I think they made a fluoride containing version, but I didn't bother switching to it, since I already had the big tube.

This month, less than a week after my 21st, I had a dentists check-up, and low and behold, despite my actually improving flossing regiment, I had two small cavities in my back molars, facing eachother.

Now I'm going to have to get them to drill in from the surface of my teeth and fill it so it doesn't spread down to the root. Oh joy, shall I get the white fillings, with the shorter lifespan and the toxic plasticizers, or the ones that break down over time into elemental mercury and make your mouth taste like metal?

I wasn't even really sucked into this whole "fluoride is big government water poisoning" debate, because honestly I think that's whack. I just wanted to avoid sucralose and weird industrial preservatives.

That sucks.

I use Nature's Gate anise (mint can kiss my butt) fluoride free toothpaste. I have cavities from when I had a poor diet and oral hygiene as a kid. When I go in for check ups now, my teeth are in great shape. I clench my jaw which had worn away part of my gum so I have a super small sensitive spot when I brush. The dentist recommended Sensodyne. Using it just the once gave me stomach aches for a day. I also always decline the fluoride mouth rinse as it gives me tummy aches too.

I have both the white and the mercury fillings. Gotta have all the bases covered. cool

There are dietary sources of fluoride too. I believe salmon is one, but I'll have to double check. Just heading out from work and home or I'd post so links.

Element maybe, (I wouldn't know about that,) but not chemical. That award goes to batrachotoxin, which is excreted by poison dart frogs.

Atleast, so far as I've heard.

I've asked about having the mercury removed but at this point it's better left in. It's a bit like asbestos. Asbestos is fine as long as you don't disturb it. The fillings are in there and taking them out (my dentist pretty much did all my molars) would be more dangerous than leaving them in. I might get them removed way down the road and replaced with gold or something.

my mom was dumb and raised me with stuff like fruity pebbles so i already have two filled cavities, and some they are supposed to fill that I refused to have them fill, and Im tryign to take care of them before they get worse, basically if they hurt I give them extra attention until they stop hurting and Im fine so far, but once I had to resort to flouride which I had quit, but not like I swallowed the glob of toothpaste anwyays, I rinsed my mouth after like 2 dozen times lol.

And pretty sure a low sugar diet with high fiber would help your teeth. Also apples and blueberries are supposed to help your teeth, but I think it might be because their insecticides they use on those plants are SODIUM FLOURIDE.

It's not really "whack," actually. Fluoride is only effective at strengthening tooth enamel if it's applied directly to the teeth. Putting it in drinking water is a stupid idea because if you ingest it, it doesn't really get to your teeth, and it can have other toxic effects in the body. I'm pretty sure the ADA has said as much (I can't be bothered to find a reference for this myself, I'm sure it's on Google Scholar if you're really interested).

So I don't mind having fluoride in my toothpaste, but I don't really want to be eating it.
