The cape was, she thought, a blessing and a curse at the same time. A rich violet that few people could afford, pinned at one shoulder with an ornate silver Sword pin, it marked her status clearly even in a crowd, left her standing out like a beacon. It meant that half the people got out of her way, with either nervous looks or brief twitches of smiles. A moment of peace -- except that the other half approached with small concerns, with complains against their neighbors, with rumors that had come down through the grape vine...

It grated at Rosalie, sometimes. She was good at the search and rescue, was good at clearing up brawls and fights and arguments, even at making decisions when it came to serious complaints. She was not good at dealing with the worried young people, with minor squabbles that people should deal with on their own, with wide-eyed questions from ignorant peasants --

So. She hid in the act of browsing, shoulders drawn up under that cloak and head tipped down to study a display of gloves. Most of her was considering taking in the rest of the rounds quickly and retreating home -- or stripping off the cloak and doing it quietly, unnoticed...

Kodi was late. And only growing later. But she had told Tristan to make sure he packed the extra cloak he had! That the snow was going to come in heavier the previous night. So why was she not surprised her brother had forgotten the cloak?! The peasant had just faceplamed when she saw it, sitting exactly where she'd set it for him.

Thus, she had to take it to him. Because knowing her brother, he'd end up getting a sickness from obliviousness to everything around him.

Which was how she wound up browsing through some of the small displays of items between home and the weaponsmiths. She'd pause every minute or so, merely eying the merchandise. It wasn't like she could just buy stuff because she liked it or wanted it! Kodi didn't make enough for that.

With a small sigh, she turned longingly away from a new pair of boots...and ran smack into another individual. The girl stumbled back, a small squeak of surprise escaping.

"O-Oh! I'm so sorry! Are you alright?!" Kodi looked up to see who she'd run into...and felt her stomach tighten nervously. This was someone much higher in status then she was. And the pin of a Sword...Kodi swallowed.

The Swords weren't exactly a rarity on the streets -- but neither were they exactly an every day occurrence. They had a tendency of gathering where trouble might be brewing, of sensing oncoming danger before it came, or perhaps just perceiving the shift in emotion and attitude that prefaced a fight, or a theft, or a crazed on loon on the corner ranting about the Spirits.

Since Kodi herself didn't tend to make trouble [at least, not the kind that required legal action], her interaction with the Red Cloaks was probably minimal, and that with the Purple Cloaks -- the Second Swords, like poor Rosalie here -- were probably even fewer. Let, then, her eyes travel upward, over the ornate pin holding Rosalie's cape in place, to take in the decidedly feminine features, clashing with the masculine shape of her shirt and pants, the short-cropped dark hair, the very serious eyes, the hint of a frown --

She wasn't angry, exactly, as her hand shot out to catch Kodi's elbow, but she did take a moment to check her pocket, her pouch, more than passingly familiar with the ways of pickpockets who used a little bump like that to clean you out. Her eyes raked over the girl, exploring and then dismissing, to some degree, as lacking the kind of iron will it would take to try to rob someone as well armed as Rosalie was.

"Slow down." Her voice was warm, soft, not the ringing tone she'd use in the field. Rosalie shrugged under her cloak, still frowning.

She felt herself swallow nervously, not sure if she'd done something wrong and thus earned the 'pleasure' of running into a Purple Cloak? Or had been clumsy and ran into the wrong person. Either way, Kodi was definitely a little freaked out. Not that she had anything against either the Red or Purple Cloaks! They just made her nervous. And really, the only times she ever heard of either appearing was from those at the Inn she worked as a waitress at, telling them all kinds of stories of troublesome people being taken away. Or, y'know, something along those lines.

The hand that caught her elbow made the girl freeze and trip over her words even more. Oh dear sweet cold! What did she do?! Was she about to be taken away and never to be seen again?! Who would take care of Tristan!

Okay. Okay so maybe she'd been reading one too many books recently. Or heard a few too many tall tales from those she'd been serving.

"P-Please forgive me! I wasn't watching where I was going. Too busy admiring the boots there, and wishful thinking clouded my mind. And...umm...I'm sorry?" Obviously she was definitely in no way used to being face to face with someone higher ranked then an 'Artisan', with the occasional lower Noble.

"Umm..." Kodi didn't even know what to say now.

If Kodi had placed Rosalie's rank above Noble out loud, she might well have gotten a laugh in reply. Rosalie's own view on the position was clear: something to be done with her that got her out of sight, that kept her quiet and distracted and out of her father's hair. And it worked. She'd taken to the position easily, thoughtlessly, and spent most of her days trying to forget the fine heated quarters of her childhood.

In contrast, the stuttering and quiet panic in Kodi's face and body language made her frown and go quiet, gloved fingers still curled around the girl's elbow to keep her from dashing off and Rosalie's chin hiked up a bit. As Swords went, she wasn't the most imposing one out there -- short and stick straight, out of uniform most people wouldn't have given her a second look. And that, of course, was what the purple cloak was there for.

"...everything alright?" The words came slowly, carefully, Rosalie's eyes gone toward calculating as she looked the girl over. Squirrelish behavior usually implied someone had done something wrong...

She wasn't sure what to do now. And felt very much like a caged creature that had been caught doing something wrong. But...she hadn't done anything! Had she? Kodi couldn't think of anything. But that hand that was still curled about her elbow felt like a heavy weight chaining her to the spot.

"Y-Yes. I...I mean, I'm probably late for work at this point. And I got distracted while trying to run to the weaponsmith. My brother forgot his heavier cloak. I was trying to take it to him." Kodi just started talking, probably giving the poor Sword more information than she really cared to hear. But she was so nervous and everything was just spilling out with no filters.

Kodi managed to close her mouth, and stare at the Sword. There was a faint flush to her skin, and not from the chill. "Oh...I'm so sorry! Forgive me. I...I tend to ramble when...um, nervous." She really wished Tristan was here at the moment.

Rosalie huffed out a breath, fingers shifting around Kodi's wrist and eyes flicking around them for a moment before she let go. So. Maybe this one didn't have the guts to be a pick-pocket anyway, considering the high points of color on her cheeks and the helpless bubbling of her voice out of her throat. The girl freed, she smoothed gloved fingertips together in a fidgety way, strands of fine dark hair cutting across her line of vision.

"He won't die if you slow down a pace." Not this time, anyway. Not at this time of year, while the fish were still hopping and the worst of the chill faded away. She shook her head, still frowning, but her attention starting to wander away.

Once her wrist was released, Kodi stumbled back a step, one hand rubbing along the area the Sword had been holding. She was clearly confused, yet wise enough not to question why she'd been released. Or why she'd been grabbed in the first place. Instead, she watched the other, letting her heart slow to a steady beat and wishing the flush to her cheeks would disappear.

A small bit of surprise flickered through her gaze and a very small, hesitant smile curled her lips up. "No...I guess he won't, will he?" But she couldn't help but worry about her brother!

Kodi let out a small sigh, running her hand down her skirts to make sure they weren't dirty. Or, well, any dirtier than usual. She glanced up at the Sword again, a curious look about her. "If...you don't mind, I'd like to...apologize for not watching where I was going. P-Please forgive me!" A few seconds pause. "Might I ask what your name is?" Why did she want to know? Wasn't it better to be more anonymous around them? UGH! She couldn't remember. And why did she have to feel so nervous?!

"Rosalie Costigan." It came with a frown, not a friendly smile, no dip of a bow. She tipped her head to look down her nose at Kodi, to consider the nervous girl, the fidgeting, the flush. Behind her, the merchant was fidgety, about as unhappy as Kodi was. No one wanted a Purple Cloak standing outside their shop, stopping traffic, scaring off potential business...

"...did you need something?" And this was about as much as she was willing to do, when it came to small talk.
