The Death Room is the mysterious room in Shibusen where Shinigami often resides.
Appearance
The entrance to the Death Room is located at the end of one of the passageways in Shibusen, indicated by a large door marked with a skull and the plate, 'Death Room.' However, although from the outside, the door is firmly placed on a wall, when one walks inside the Death Room, when looking at the door from inside the Death Room, the door seems to be standing on its own with no wall behind it, implying that it might be some sort of different dimension.
Once going through the door, one has to walk through a tunnel of torii gates, which are styled to look like guillotines. After that, they reach the main part of the room.
A strange-looking room, the Death Room is dome-shaped and domed ceiling with a bright blue sky filled with white clouds, in contrast to what one would expect from a dwelling of a typical Grim Reaper. The clouds actually float around as if the ceiling is an actual sky, sometimes with the clouds drifting along the ground. In the anime, the sky actually ends up being the only bright piece of scenery left as the Insanity Wavelength causes the true sky to turn a dark red. The main part of the room is a large round platform with some stairs leading up to it. In the centre of the platform is a large mirror with a brass frame with a Shinigami mask on top, where Shinigami usually dwells. At the top of the dome, small windows show the scenery outside (only shown in the anime).
Around the platform is a vast desert-like expanse, which looks like it stretches on for eternity. The entire ground around the platform is filled with strange cross-like foundations rising from the ground. In the anime, it is shown that each cross marks a place where a Kishin Egg is buried, meaning that the Death Room is a place for storing souls as well as Shinigami's dwelling.
In the manga, the appearance of the Death Room keeps changing, from a strange room with candles and crosses floating in the air, and a single platform in the middle of nowhere. Recently though, it adopts the same appearance it has in the anime.
Contacting Shinigami
Shinigami can use the mirror in the Death Room to monitor the progress of Shibusen's students. The mirror can also be used to function as a sort of video conferencing device between Shinigami and one or more person. Shinigami is also known to dwell 'inside' the mirror at times.
Shinigami can contact people freely, but others must contact Shinigami through a special method. That is, to find a mirror or any reflective surface such as a window, and trace the numbers '42-42-564' onto it. The mirror will start to ring like a phone, and the Shinigami picks up and he and the caller can see each other via the mirror. '42-42-564' is pronounced shini-shini-goroshi (しにしにごろし) in Japanese, which literally means death-death-murder (死に死に殺し). People seeing Shinigami in the Death Room can also call Shinigami directly by writing the number on his mirror.
There seems to be other ways of contacting Shinigami, although these methods are never delved into. Tsubaki once conjures up a meeting with Shinigami by using a smoke bomb marked with a skull, and Death the Kid uses his Grim Reaper powers to create a Shinigami mask-shaped magic circle on the ground, causing a holographic image to come up.
Part in the Series
Shinigami often calls students he wants to talk to into the Death Room for one-to-one talks. He also holds private meetings with Death Scythes and staff, and at one point, Medusa. After Asura's revival, Spirit is almost always in the Death Room with him.
Calling Phrase to contact Shinigami: “42-42-564, whenever you want to knock on Death's door.”
