I work in a nursing home as an assistant director of recreation. My boss asked me if I can work on May 19, which is a Saturday. I told her I can't because it's my Shabbat. Well, the asked became a told. I have to work Saturday. I explained why I can't, but she told me the facility treats everyone equal no matter what there religion is. Sometimes I have to work on my Shabbat and that I have to miss service for the day. First, we have one person working, but she wants 2. One is going to be away and the director been working a lot and needs a day off, which she is getting on Sunday, plus she is off on May 17. I am working May 20 and I will be by myself because they can't get a 2nd person. Anyway, she told me it's a facility policy that it doesn't matter what your religion is and everyone is treated equal. I don't feel it's equal if it's going against the religion. I did some research and found out it's going against the federal law title 7 of the Civil Right Act of 1964. I also asked for the policy and haven't gotten one. She told be she doesn't know if it's written or not. She was going to talk to the adminitstor, but I haven't heard anything yet. I been told to call the ADL. I was just wondering what everyone thinks about this.

I also had a choice to either work that Saturday or quiet. Those are my choices. I don't think that's right.

What country do you live in, if I may ask? Because if it's the US, that sounds like a religious discrimination lawsuit.
Edit: I'm no lawyer, just so you know. I just know that it sounds like one. And maybe you could talk to a lawyer. Preferably one with rabies.

I live in NJ. I just talked to a lawyer today. He is Jewish and doesn't like it either. I did contact ADL.
I was told today that I am schudule to work Saturday and she accepts me to be there even though I told her I can't.
On Friday, I was in a meeting with the Adminiastor and he told me if he favors me than he has to favor everyone else according the the policy. They going agianst all religion

The ACLU needs to hear about this. Since you cite the Civil Right Act of 1964, you're in the US, which means that you absolutely have not just a case, but a strong case. Have your lawyer serve notice to your employers that failure to respect your religion and that of the other employees -- who should also probably sign it as a show of support and a heads-up that the boss/company are about to be on the receiving end of a whole lot of trouble -- will result in not just a lot of negative public press, but a very likely payout in your favor.

That explains a lot. I used to live in Dirty Jersey. The Civil Rights Act hasn't reached that state yet, at least that's the mentality. I hope you manage to make things better over there, if just for yourself.

Yesterday they took me off the schedule.
