The Story of the Dirge

For the better part of a thousand years the superpowers of the region have waged holy war with one another. The nations of Arkadia, Roma, Christdom, and Islahn all rage in the fires of war in the name of their god. Through fire, steel, and magic have they torn the region apart. For a thousand years has the blood of the people stained and soaked the stones and trees.

Recently, a number of minor lords, nobles, and some common folk collectively decided that they had enough of the fighting - that faith in their respective gods was not worth the bloodshed and turmoil. And so, under threat of treason, the group left their respective nations and founded a new home upon the center island of the region. The island was divided up into three separate territories: Alabaster, Rabanastre, and Dalmasca.

It has been a little over a decade since the colonization of the center island and the war seems, to the inhabitants, a distant memory. However, the illusion of peace can only last so long.

The Nations of the Dirge

Roma
The Holy Empire of Roma. The worshipers of Cathol. The capital city is Cardinal City. It is under the strict rule of Emperor Abel, a devout believer in Cathol. Hardly accepting of anyone who does not believe in Cathol, they ruthlessly wage war with the rest of the region.

Christdom
The Kingdom of Christdom. The worshipers of Christos. The capital city is Nazaris. It is ruled by the goodly king Mathias, but the majority of the kingdom is overseen by his adviser Judae. Judae takes a more hostile approach to relations with other nations.

Arkadia
The Covenant of Arkadia. The worshipers of Yahna. The capital city is Arkhan. It is ruled over by the Council, a group of aristocrats who view the war as a boon to their economy. The motives for the war are purely financial.

Islahn
The Dynasty of Islahn. The worshipers of Allahan. The capital city is Nasir. The ruling class is a patriarchal society. Hardly accepting of anyone who does not believe in Allahan, they ruthlessly wage war with the rest of the region.

The Center Island
Alabaster, Rabanastre, and Dalmasca - the three territories of the center island, forming a smaller nation-state. Consisting of people from all other nations, they coexist quite harmoniously.

If you want, you can create your own village or something equivalent to that within one of these nations. Just PM me a description of it and I will add it in.

The Magic of the Dirge

There aren't very strict rules in terms of what individuals can do with magic. However, I do ask that everyone try to create limits with their characters. No one should exceed what is humanly possible, and the larger the spectacle of magical ability, the more taxing it is.

The types of magic usually involve elemental manipulation, psionics, summoning, controlling, healing, and more.

I leave this part of your character(s) up to your imagination and trust you to be rational.

The Mission of the Dirge

I'm hoping to create this roleplay as a basic template that can grow and evolve based upon the people participating in it. I don't want it to become a who-has-the-bigger-p***s showdown where everything is battle-oriented. Story and character development should be the primary goal.

To that effect, I reserve the right to steer the roleplay in the direction that I think it should go, unless the participants can do it all on their own with their awesomeness.

Please PM your profiles to Sugar Dhaku. Don't worry about initially creating it. I won't be too stringent as to what kind of character you can make. Character Name: Drakaer Wrym
Character's Nation: Arkadia
Magical Ability: Transformation
Character Background: As a young man, Drakaer displayed excellent abilities in tactical warfare and had a knack for strategy. This was undoubtedly brought upon by the tutelage of his military father. He was brought up to believe in the might of the Arkadian military as well as the belief in their god. He quickly rose through the ranks to a high-ranking position wherein he participated in many bloody battles. However, something changed within him. During an assault on an enemy fortress, he was assaulted by a powerful form of dark magic. The magic enveloped him and twisted him, causing him to change. It was reported by a scouting party that the assault on the fortress was nothing more than a massacre. He hasn't been seen since.
Other Information: Rumors of the massacre spread throughout the nations, and so fed his legend. Rumors occasionally surface, claiming to spot him in random villages.

Character Name: Jaquan Pierex
Character's Nation: Originally from the Empire of Roma, she has since settled in Dalmasca.
Magical Ability: Pyrokinesis
Character Background: Jaquan was raised in the Empire of Roma, taught to be devoted, to be religious, and to be obedient above all. She did her best to learn those lessons, she really did, but she simply wasn’t very good at it. Especially once she discovered her magic, there were incredible items she wasn’t supposed to touch and fascinating people she wasn’t allowed to speak to, and it was driving her mad. Her magic reacted to it, and after a few incidents where she narrowly avoided setting fire to her schoolhouse, her teacher, and her home – among other things – she ended up just trying to repress it all as best she could. Once she was old enough to leave home, she went away and wandered for a few years, learning her magic on her own terms. Eventually, she came to Dalmasca, a place that spoke to her in a way that no other place has before or since. Though she still travels, she now calls Dalmasca home.
Other Information: Jaquan has heard some troubling rumours of children gone missing as of late, and her current project is to track down the source of these rumours and get the details.

. o O ( Initial post for moi. Time to get the proverbial ball rolling. Remember, it's sandbox-y. So don't feel like you're too constricted. )

The moon hung silently in the clear night sky. The face of the celestial night orb seemed to be mocking him with its constant smile. The large, raven-black owl opened its piercing silver eyes, perfectly round and black pupils piercing the light coming from the sky. Its sharp talons pierced the bark of the limb it had perched itself on. The village nearby was beginning to settle down for the night. The townsfolk were leaving the large barn at the edge of the farm hold and were singing loudly and drunkenly while laughing and enjoying parting company. They had just finished their summer festival dance and were too drunk in mirth to have any other thoughts than the night's proceedings.

And then a sobering scream pierced the night air. It was upon them as quickly as they had heard the scream but it was too fast for them to see it. A few of the adults felt a rush of wind sweep past them; a few others, drunk on ale, fell to the ground with hard thuds. The sound of wings beating sounded in their ears, but they could still hear the scream. Another rush of wind blew open the barn door and knocked over the several oil lanterns that were still lit. The lanterns broke open, igniting the oil and catching the hay bales. Within seconds the contents of the barn were up in flames.

"Mama! Papa!" A voice sounded from the roof of barn. And all at once two of the bewildered adults realized that their young daughter was no longer beside them.

"Sophia!" the mother cried. "Derrick, do something!"

Derrick, the girl's father, out of pure instinct, ran to the opposite side of the barn. There, the rotund man found a worn ladder and began to climb it, fearing each step would break the twine holding the legs in place. As he neared the top, the ladder swayed. The barn was beginning to buckle. The support beams were nearly ash. The ladder began to tilt backwards, succumbing to Derrick's wait. With a burst of adrenaline, Derrick jumped from the ladder and onto the roof of the barn. It was there that he saw it: something long and metallic that barely shown in the moonlight. Piercing red eyes shown in the darkness like red-hot coals.

"Papa!" Sophia cried once more, shaking Derrick from the fear that he felt.

"Sophia! Hold on!" Derrick rushed towards his daughter, ignoring the red eyes that stared at him. He didn't even seem to notice the serpentine tail whipping at him from his side. Derrick then cried out in pain, had heard a few of his ribs crack. He was flung off the side of the roof and fell several feet to the ground.

"Derrick!" His wife has rushed to his side and knelt over him. He was still alive but could not move.

"Mama!" Her cry was barely heard over the sound of large wings flapping open and cutting through the air. With the rush of air, the barn finally collapsed into a pile of blazing wood.

"Sophia! Sophia!"

And she was gone.

Jaquan had hidden herself under the spreading branches of a large tree to escape the heat; she could do notes in any weather, but she preferred the cool shade to the relentlessly beating sun. Odd for someone who liked fire as much as she did.

The lazy scratch of her pen was the only sound around her. For the middle of the day, things were disturbingly quiet. There was no chatter of adults, no squealing or laughter of children, only the occasional animal sound and otherwise, just the wind. Of course, if the stories she had heard were true, people had good reason to be staying inside – and keeping their children inside – unless absolutely necessary.

Or maybe it was just the heat.

Jaquan didn’t find herself in need of any more shelter than the tree provided, though – she might not have enjoyed the sun’s vicious beaming, but she could take it. Besides, she wanted to finish writing this down before she forgot anything that she’d been told; when her entire purpose in being here was to track down these rumours, especially when getting people to talk was so very difficult, she couldn’t afford to lose anything to a poor memory.

Tucking a loose lock of blonde hair back, she frowned studiously down at the papers as she finished her brief summary of what the dark-eyed, tearful mother had had to tell her – between nervous glances back as though she were afraid someone would overhear. It had been almost heartbreaking to watch her struggle through her story, and so Jaquan had listened patiently even when it had begun to sound like a madwoman’s ravings.

Blowing lightly on the sheet in order to make the ink dry, she tilted her head up to the wind, watching a few leaves drift lazily down. Brushing a finger lightly over the sheet after a few minutes, she decided that it was good enough. She got to her feet, rolling up the sheet and storing it with a number of others in her little bag. There was an answer to this somewhere, she knew it, and since it seemed like no one else was looking, she would just have to do it herself.

The wind had picked up, and from whistling it had gone up to a low moaning sound. Perhaps it would be a good idea to get under shelter sooner rather than later; it sounded like a storm was on its way, and Jaquan had no interest in getting either herself or her precious notes wet in the rain. Slinging her bag over her shoulder, she pulled her hair out from under the strap and turned away from the town, heading out the opposite direction of the way she had come – and away from the coming storm.

. o O ( About time, madam. )

The tall man clad in armor looked up at the coming storm. He narrowed his eyes at the blackening sky and made a face as the wind picked up. "Damn it all." His voice was more of a snarl than anything. He lifted himself up from a crouched position and tossed a part of the burnt rubble back into the slightly smoking pile. From the gossip around town some large wind had knocked over the lanterns and caught the barn on fire. Other rumors said a demon had done it. Either were plausible. He hadn't had a chance to speak to anyone in depth; people weren't really his thing - especially when they wouldn't stop staring at him. And then there was that hysterical woman who wouldn't stop bawling. God, he hated that. He had no patience for that kind of outpouring of emotion.

"Move, Draegen; don't want to be caught in the rain." He turned away from the rubble and decided to head towards the small inn in the middle of the village. Luckily the rates were low; they had to be now that something attacked the village. Who would want to stay in a town haunted by a monster? He had to chuckle at some of the families in town already packing up wagons. He had overheard that they'd be traveling to a larger city. Any city large enough was days away; they'd be sitting ducks to anything that could do what this creature did.

Then he paused for a moment. Someone was moving away from the town - alone. She was some distance away from him, so he couldn't quite maker her out, but she was definitely female. "Huh." So he wasn't the only one who was a stranger to this place. Oh, well. Didn't make much difference to him. But then again....

"Hey, you!" He started towards her in a marching pace. The metal of his greaves and boots rattled as he moved. "Woman!" He waved over towards her and continued to march.

((OOC: Shush, don’t judge me. I’m slow. Also, I know you said other people had sent in profiles, so why aren’t they posted yet? >.>))

As Jaquan tilted her head, she frowned. Over the wind that had continued to rise since she’d begun to walk away, she thought she had heard someone…calling. About to turn her head and check, she was distracted by a sudden loud screech of wind that yanked violently at her clothes and nearly ripped one of the scrolls out of her bag. Leaping forward, she just caught it between her fingertips and forced it deeper into the bag, pulling it around to hold it closer to her. She couldn’t lose those bedamned notes – she’d worked too hard to get what she had so far.

Gritting her teeth with impatience as the wind continued to pull at her clothing and hair, the voice she’d thought she’d heard forgotten, she bent her shoulders forward a little to protect the precious bag and moved forward. The storm threatening overhead told her that she was going to be in some serious difficulties soon – rain did not agree with her, not even a little bit. She had hoped to find some sort of shelter, but this town was farther away from other places than she’d thought, and—

“Woman!”

What was that now? She didn’t want to stop or slow down; she was already in a hurry because she wanted to get under shelter of some kind before the rain hit. Though she had a coat of sorts buried in the bag under her rolled-up notes, getting it out would be a pain and it wouldn’t keep the rain off for more than a few minutes. Not worth the effort, in Jaquan’s opinion.

But she was the only woman moving, and perhaps this person calling in their (irritatingly imperious) voice was someone from the village who had something more to tell her. Part of her already knew it was no such thing – no one from the village would have dared call after a stranger in such a way. They were all too scared to do anything of the sort.

Glancing over her shoulder, she knew she was right. The man was dressed in armor and marching like a soldier – he was most certainly not a native of the town she had just passed through. Annoyed, she waited until he was within hearing distance and then spoke, her voice perhaps just a touch more snappy than it needed to be.

“Jaquan. Not woman. What do you want?”
