Spent a lot of time on planes the past two weeks, so had time to sort through all my old writing. I thought it would be fun to re-write the old things I've given up on. The following is inspired by an old story, one I might re-vamp section by section and post here. I orginally titled the story 'Nameless'.
**
001. New Beginnings Words: 369
The times marked by only the light of stars were unnerving. Man is used to light and finds comfort in it, and when sources are not found, they find artificial means. This initial agitation makes the rest seem worse. It makes their celebration seem dark and foreboding instead of merry. It makes their screeches seem unnatural and frightening instead of common place. Lack of sleeps adds to the whole of this, finds ways to blur reality with the surreal, so that things a mind can usually rationalise seem awfully nightmarish.
All these were things she would tell him if she were there with him that night.
Breath was something achieved with more difficulty than usual. He was sweating with the effort - or was that fear? - as he willed his heart to calm. The dark, their screams, the thick air, it reverted him to a state of childishness, a state where he could not differentiate between the shadows and the monsters they formed.
Their laughter approached, and he scooted closer to the headboard, a grown man reduced to panicked eyes and an unhealthy heartbeat.
"Ask me!"
It's face was covered in an agitated sweat, his face split by a large grin, and each breath he took made an unnatural whistle that echoed through his mind.
Not unnatural, he reminded himself. Should there be light, should he have come at any other time, he would have welcomed this visit. Determining the source of emotions, reactions to stimuli, these were all things he would have gladly done. Fearing this creature at his window was not his usually approach. Unfortunately, his heart, his lungs, his very bowels, made his mind's voice weaker than normal.
"Ask me!"
There was a breath caught in his throat, his view fixed on the creature's unnatural orbs, hollow and pulsing, aimed in his direction.
"Ask - "
"What is your name?" It came out hoarse and much louder than it had been his whole time here. "What..." he took a moment to swallow the lump in his throat. "What is your name?"
Those thin lips parted, and out of his mouth came a shriek so piercing that his ears rang for the rest of the night.

Fffthank you! I'm hoping it goes more smoothly, too. To be quite frank, I don't think I'll ever see the prize at the end of the tunnel, but it's still fun to try. cx
How's the challenge going for you?
