our dog, a basic dog, friendly, harmless, loves kids, makes a mess, raids the trash, kisses your face while you sleep
she has cancer
her right upper gum is swollen and as bright pink as bubble gum
it makes her right eye bleed
and she has trouble eating and even breathing now.
the vet says surgery would just shorten her life.
she is my folks' Lab but i take care of her.
so what can we do?

Oh no. I am so sorry. It depends on the animal and your own situation but you just have to do the best you are able for her.
This year three animals I knew had to be put down for medical reasons, and it isn't easy at all. You weep for a day and feel like a failure for a few months, but after a while what's left are the happy memories.

If she's in to much pain, then putting her down might be the best option. or go with the surgery. If it doesn't bug her i would leave it.

Do What is best for the dog it will be whats best for you and your folks too and will make her the most comfortable even if that means putting her down. In the end its a lot less painful for her and you then if you sit there and watch the disease progress. I watched my grandma's dog die its not something you want to see ever. I also just put down my kitten who got FIV and complications from it.
I'm sorry it sucks to lose a family member. cry
