::The Beginning:: The circle sat in silence, none of the nine elders that were currently standing around the fire wanting to address the issue at hand. There was no sound except the crackling of burning wood, and the occasional rustle of fabric as one of the elders shifted uncomfortably. Each stared blankly at the fire, their minds racing at the information they had received earlier that day. Finally, the youngest stepped forward into the firelight, her impatience getting the best of her, and her face became visible to the others.
"Nine, the circle is open to you." The voices of the other eight rang out in unison, inviting her to speak. She shifted on her feet, remaining silent. "Speak, or step down."
"It can't be done. We don't even know if Outland exists!" Nine hissed, voicing her thoughts to keep from stepping down, and officially beginning the meeting. "Why should we waste valuable lives searching for a simple children's tale?"
Two others stepped forward into the light, their identical features marking them as twins. They shared an uneasy look before speaking, not needing an invitation to do so now that the meeting had begun.
"Child's tale or not..." Seven began, turning to look at his brother.
"... It is our only hope now." Eight finished, completing his brothers thought.
The other council members had long since gotten used to Seven and Eight finishing each others sentences, and were unfazed by it now. Nine, on the other hand, was new to the circle, and had yet to get used to them. She threw the twins an uneasy look, and shifted away from them before she resumed speaking.
"Surely you must be joking. Things are not so bad yet that we must send our people out on suicide missions!" Nine raged, her expression darkening. "We are not that desperate!"
It was then that the eldest stepped forward, her presence causing the other three to step back out of the light. Her face was grim, and she stared into the fire with sad eyes as she spoke.
"We are that desperate. Our land has dried up, our plants no longer grow. All our animals die because they have nothing to graze, and our people die because they have nothing to eat. This land is no longer fit for living, and we will not last more than a few years at this rate." She paused, looking around at the figures standing outside of the light, and they knew the decision had been made. "Five will go, all from different stations. Five men and women, each cloaked in their own color. They will travel through The Shade, and return when they have found Outland. If they do not return, then we will know all hope is lost. We will send the messengers in the morning."
There was silence as she stepped back, each of the circle at a loss for words. Nine stepped forward once more, putting the fire out to signal the end of the meeting. In silence they returned to their homes, each trying to think of who they should send. Their fate now rested in the hands of a simple Children's Tale, and the chosen five.

::The Fall, and The Shade:: The year was 2074, and the world was at war. Nobody was safe from army drafts, and every nation seemed to be pulling the whole of their population to join the ranks of their military. In the span of a few short months, the world's population had dropped by almost half, as human beings mercilessly slayed each other for their governments, their beliefs. The land was scarred from explosions, raging fires, and poisonous gas. It was a war from hell, and nobody seemed to be able to remember how it started. They were just blindly fighting each other, wasting life after life. Finally, nuclear weapons emerged, and the war was brought to a devastating end as nations fired upon each other, the weapons seemingly wiping out all human life. Few people survived, and those that did went into hiding. Civilization was erased, cities crumbled, and all that was left was The Shade. The Shade was a dark shadow that blotted out the sky, a cloud left over from the war. It hung over the land, infecting it, mutating all the life left on earth. None of the few scattered humans left alive could remember a time before The Shade, and they seemed to give up hope that humanity could ever return. They began to wander, hopelessly searching for light in the darkness now looming over them. Finally, they found a place to call home, a large grove cut off from the rest of the land, and seemingly untouched by The Shade. It was surrounded by the darkness on all sides, but for some reason it seemed the Shade could not enter. It was here that they settled down, naming their new home Morden. They would live here for nearly a hundred years, the war fading from their minds completely, and their hopes slowly returning. A tale emerged among the people, one of a vast land where the shade had faded, where people were safe. They called this place Outland. It was the perfect place to rebuild their fallen civilization, and some left in search of it. Others stayed behind, the village growing into a town, and people going about their lives with a new light in their lives. Until finally, it all came crashing down. The people had used up their resources, milking their small area of land dry. They were quickly losing hope again as they realized that once again the end was nearing for them. And then, a plan was formed, based off of what was thought to be just a story.

::Morden:: A large village in an area completely untouched by the shade. Morden is relatively young, and was built about a century after the Fall. The people here live simple lives, and time has seemed to travel backward for them. They no longer remember metal buildings that reach the sky, or paved roads with machinery to transport people. Their lives have become almost medieval, and they live in simple homes connected by dirt roads. The villagers of Morden each have their own place in life. These places are assigned to them when they are young by one of the nine members of the circle. In this way they become a disciple of one of the elder crafts, and a daughter or son of their chosen elder. The people of Morden only meet the elder that they serve under, never any others, and spend their entire lives devoted to their craft. This system keeps people happy, and supplies the village with everything that it needs. Lately, Morden has seemed to darken, and the shade has slowly closed in on the land. The villagers have taken advantage of their land, and milked it of all it's resources. Because of this, the land is dying, and The Shade is beginning to filter in. Strange creatures have begun living near the village, and a few people have gone missing. The land can no longer grow enough for everyone to eat, and the animals that the villagers depend on have started to die off. The end is once again coming near, and the villagers of Morden now have no choice but to search for Outland. I. The Beginning II.The Fall and The Shade III. Morden IV. ::The Circle and their Stations:: The Circle is made up of nine elders, who founded the village of Morden. Since the day that they discovered the land that Morden now sits on, they have not aged. The Elders believe that this may be an effect of wandering in The Shade for such a long period of time, but the actual reason is unknown. Tara (F)-Elder: Nine, The Youngest The Messenger Messengers: Chosen for their mix of impatience and perseverance, Messengers are vital to The Circle, since they themselves can not be in contact with the people of Morden outside of their stations. Messengers are fast on their feet and prefer to get their job done as fast as possible. They do whatever they deem necessary to completely their tasks correctly in the shortest amount of time possible. Because of this, they may be a bit rude, and have a very hard time sitting still for any amount of time. Irod (M)-Elder: Eight The Artist Artists: In this case, Artist is a general term. (Music, painting, sculpting, smithing, theatre, dance, culinary arts, etc.) Artists are generally laid back dreamers, and take their time in their labors. This does not mean that they don't take their labors seriously, though. They are very observant people, and almost nothing goes unnoticed by them. The Artists have a darker side to their skill set, and consider thieving to be among their sacred arts. Because of this, the people of Morden are wary of those who hold this station, and sometimes downright rude to them. Erik (M)-Elder: Seven The Scholar Scholars: Scholars are studious people, dedicated to obtaining knowledge of any form. They are generally introverts, and keep to themselves. For this reason they tend to go unnoticed until a time comes that their knowledge is needed. This "invisibility" makes them perfect for obtaining gossip, as people don't think twice about speaking in front of them. Scholars are often sought out when advice is needed or disputes need to be solved. Myca (F)-Elder: Six The Farmer Farmers: Farmers are hard working, independent people. They have a vast knowledge of plant life, and often work with Medics growing herbs and medicinal plants for this reason. Most parties going into The Shade are usually accompanied by a Farmer, since they can identify plants that are safe to eat. Farmers are well respected in Morden for their knowledge of plant life, and are mainly female. Nora (F)-Elder: Five, The Middle Child The Guardian Guardians: The fighters of Morden, they are chosen for their physical strength and tact. Their main purpose is to defend Morden from creatures that live in The Shade, and to protect hunting and scavenging parties. Guardians have an iron will, and are trained from a young age not to back down from a fight. At the same time, they are also taught to know when it is a losing battle, and to find solutions in extreme situations to keep themselves and their companions alive. A party never goes into The Shade without a Guardian among their ranks. Farne (M)-Elder: Four The Hunter Hunters: Hunters are generally either one of two extremes. The can be boisterous, and see hunting as a sport, or serious people dedicated to their jobs.Hunters are stealthy, and have adapted to seeing in The Shade's dim light. They are also excellent marksmen. The biggest downfall of the Hunter is their predator mindset, which causes many inhabitants of Morden to fear them. They have been know to go into furies of blood-lust and attack everything in sight, including their companions. Because of this, people often refer to them as "Piranhas" behind their backs. Sei (M)-Elder: Three The Mason Masons: Masons are the designers and builders of Morden. They are sometimes considered a branch off of the Artists by others, though they would never think of themselves in such a way. They are chosen for their planning skills and physical strength, but also because of their gentle heart. Masons are often first placed as Guardians or Hunters, only to be moved when it is proven that they do not have the heart of a fighter. Their mindset is more like that of a scholar, and their knowledge and strength are put to use building safe and sturdy homes. Buildings created by Masons are built to keep creatures of The Shade out, and because of their fortress-like design, are not cheap. Faera (F)-Elder: Two The Shepherd Shepherds: Shepherds are in charge of watching over and protecting the village livestock. There are only a few Shepherds left in the village, since there is very little livestock left these days. Shepherds are gifted with a pup when they are given their full title, and this animal serves as a companions for its entire life. The Shepherds have a talent for calming animals, and also outsmarting them-- creatures of The Shade included. They usually carry a staff, or crook, of their own design, often with bells on it. Lae (F)-Elder: One, The Eldest The Medic Medics: Medics have quickly become the most valued members of Morden society, since creatures of The Shade have begun attacking the village. They can create quick and easy remedies for travelers to take with them into The Shade, and have become used to performing emergency surgeries with limited supplies during the past few years. Medics are good defensive fighters, but are not trained to fight offensively, since their abilities are to valuable to risk losing. Some Medics train in secret, though, so that they may fight alongside their companions if the need arises. Most medics carry a charm or small item of significance to keep them grounded when working under extreme or stressful conditions. I. The Beginning II.The Fall and The Shade III. Morden IV. ::The Chosen:: There will be five chosen to go into The Shade, each bearing a color of nature. They will be given a letter from their Elder detailing the task ahead of them, and a traveling cloak with the color they will represent (green, yellow, blue, red, or gray.) At nightfall, the chosen will be expected to gather near the eastern entrance to the village to meet the Elders and set off on their trip. They must bring a bag containing the supplies they will use on their trip. Notes: 1. You may choose to either have villager parents, or to be a child of The Circle. Children of The Circle are orphans who were adopted by the elders after losing their family to The Shade. When adopted, two members of the circle are chosen to fill in as the parents of these children. If you choose for your character to be a Circle Child, they may have one of the following pairs as their parents. Irod and Erik (Brothers)- Galatea
Nora and Farne (Married)- None
Myca and Faera (Sisters)- None
Sei and Lae (Married)- None
2. Gender, age, and station do not matter when creating your character. The only age restriction is that your character may not be under the age of nine, since that is when they are awarded their full title and become members of society. Also, this is just a personal preference, I would like for there to be at least one Guardian among The Chosen. There doesn't have to be, though, so don't feel pressured into making one if you don't want to. 3. Please use the following profile skeleton when making your character, as it makes my life so much easier. Also, I would like for profiles to be detailed, but that does not mean you should add so much detail that there's nothing left for us to get to know about your character during the story. A little depth goes a long way, dears. 4. PM me your character profile, using the provided skeleton. In return, I will send you a message with the extra details that you should know to get you started. I will also include your letter enlisting you as one of The Chosen, which you may choose to copy into your first post. (Or not. It's your choice.) [align=center] ((Insert Image Here))

She is also a dreamer, and lives in a world of her own, making her somewhat distant. Her soft-spoken manner combined with her distant mind often lead people to one of two extreme impressions of her. The first is that she is cold-hearted and indifferent, caring only for herself. The second is that she is simply very shy, and easily intimidated. Both of these impressions are wrong. Galatea is not at all shy, and has no issue standing up for herself or her honor. She is also a skilled fighter, and will not back down from physical disputes of any sort. At the same time, she is a very caring person, and very protective of those that she befriends. She is not at all cold, and would stop to help a stranger no matter the cost to herself. Very few people bother to get to know her since she is so distant, and she has very limited interaction with others, preferring to keep to herself and to her herd.History-When Galatea was a small child her parents were killed in an attack from The Shade. Nobody in the village was willing to adopt the young child, since they themselves had issues to worry about, and so she became a child of The Circle. For a few years she was passed back and forth by The Circle as they tried to come up with living arrangements for her. Finally, when she was six years of age, it was decided that the twins would adopt her as their own. She grew up surrounded by art and books, but never took much of an interest in them. Instead, she desired to work with animals, and would often be found roaming the fields where the livestock were kept. Because of this, she was apprenticed under Faera as a shepherd. She was a bright and artistic young girl, influenced by her parents despite her lack of interest in their stations, and grew to be quite the dreamer. When she was nine she officially took the title of Shepherd, earning her first pup, which she named Bayard. She also crafted her first crook with her own hands, which she outfitted for battle in order to protect herself and her herd. At the age of thirteen Galatea moved into a house of her own on the outskirts of Morden, where she could watch her herd. Unfortunately, she was not used to living alone, and was taken by surprise that first night in her new home. While bringing in her herd, she was attacked from behind by a strange creature from The shade, which ran off with two of her animals and left her bleeding on the ground. The attack left three jagged scars running from her right temple to her left cheek; a permanent reminder of her failure. Over time the scars lightened, becoming less noticeable, but they still serve their purpose as a constant reminder.I. The Beginning II.The Fall and The Shade III. Morden IV.
