As the harsh cold of between enveloped them, Neri counted the seconds until she was once again, at last, flying in Ista air. Just yesterday evening she was standing in the Weyrleader's quarters at Igen, listening as he explained the process for her transfer.
"Yessir!" she chirped and saluted, a little too enthusiastically.
The weyrleader folded his arms. "You sound awfully excited. Are you that glad to be getting away from us?"

Neri had first gone to Igen as part of a weyrling exchange program, to promote inter-Weyr relations. It was a temporary assignment from the get-go. Igen wanted new riders to bring diversity into their ranks, and the ever-adventurous Neri volunteered. She was more than happy to fufill her assignment at Igen, where she had worked hard and learned a lot from flying with a fresh set of riders, but now she was more than ready to take her training and lessons back with her to Ista, where she truly belonged.

Neri smiled and gave her weyrleader a playful nudge on the arm. "Aw. You know I'll miss you here.." she said, but even though her voice sounded truely regretful, she still couldn't stop smiling. Her eyes were flashing brightly. "But Ista's my home." she went on. "I need the sea to live like you need air."

The wyrleader shook his head. "Alright, alright. Just remember to report to weyrleader Ry'n when you get there."
"Of course, I.." she stopped. "Wait.. weyrleader who?!"

They emerged from between and Neri breathed deep. The wind carried the salty smell from the sea. Ah, it was great to be back! "I'm home." she whispered to herself as they began to swoop towards the rocky cliff face taht was Ista Weyr. The waves crashed on the rocks below them and birds shrieked from above. It was like they were saying 'welcome home!'

Your rampant sentimentality has always astounded me, Neri. Bayeth interrupted her pleasant musing to tell her. Why are we moving? I was happy in Igen. Indeed, only a few months into their in Igen, her social butterfly of a dragon was already beginning to form a fan club. Bayeth delighted in the attention, and ruled the group of young riders Neri flew with like a queen bee.
The decision was made from the start. Neri told her. It wasn't our choice.
You could have convinced them.
I could have. Neri agreed. But did you really want to listen to me pine after Ista day after day?
I suppose not. Bayeth finally conceded.
Relax, love. You'll make new friends. Neri said just as they were touching down in the Weyrbowl.

Neri slid off the side of her dragon and looked around. She would not normally expect a personal welcome from the weyrleader, but considering the weyrleader was a old friend of her, she hoped he would at least come out and meet her.
Did you inform them of our arrival, Bayeth? she asked.
I did. They ought to be waiting for us. she hissed.

Mine, it is time to wake, Gereth was reluctant to wake his rider, but Bayeth had announced her arrival, and that was important. Wake, Mine. We have guests, Green whirling eyes settled on R'yn. The Weyrleader had taken to using his free time for much needed sleep. Wake, Mine. If only his could look so peaceful when he was awake! Things would have been better, then.

Laying sprawled out on his bedfurs was R'yn. With one arm supporting his head, the other close to his face, it would have been easy to mistake him for a younger rider. He'd retained his small frame, despite having grown over a foot since candidancy. The worry lines that were so often present on his brow had disappeared.

Wake, Mine. Bayeth calls. A transfer from Igen. Will you greet them? The bronze pressed his snout to R'yn's side in attempt to further jar the man from his slumber. We have guests

"Nnn..." At first, it seemed R'yn's only reaction would be to groan. "Tic?" Slowly, he sat up, rubbing the sleep out of his gray eyes. With one quick glance around the weyr, he looked for his Weyrmate.

Not she. Gereth rumbled with amusement. Bayeth and hers.

"Neri?" R'yn swore, pulling on his boots. He attempted to smooth his sleep wrinkled tunic. "Why was no word sent?" he demanded of his bronze. Shards, if only he'd known...

I did not see fit to wake you. Gereth replied. Now is a good time to wake. They are here.

"Shard it, Gereth. Somethings are more important," R'yn argued as he quickly did up the bronze's riding straps. He had no time to spare. He hadn't seen Neri since they had been Weyrlings together. What would she say? Oh shards, he was late greeting her... He hoped she wouldn't think it meant anything; the lack of preparation. "I would have at least warned the kitchens to have a hot meal prepared for her."

We will meet you in the bowl, Gereth directed towards Bayeth. He wanted the green to know that he, bronze Gereth, at least, had been prepared for their arrival. R'yn was still arguing when the bronze landed next to the green. "You could have at least mentioned it," he continued, flustered. He looked up.

"Neri!" He grinned. He didn't want her realizing her arrival had been inconvient. Sharding Gereth... "Shards, it's been turns. How are you?"

Neri leaned on Bayeth as she waiting, twisting her fingers in her hands nervously. She hadn't seen her old friend in years. How much might he have changed? Would he even remember her?
Bayeth was as supportive as ever (as in, not at all): What on earth are you nervous for? Don't be so foolish, Mine.

Yet when she saw him approaching -sheepish grin and shirt wrinkled- she realized he had changed not at all. Instead of being insulted, Neri smiled. It was good to see that some things stayed the same while she was gone.

Flustered, her body fumbled as competing forces tried to make it wave and salute at the same time, until finally she just ran forward and hugged him. "R'yn! It's so good to see you again! I've missed Ista so much these last few turns." she released him and stepped back. She looked him over, and resisted the urge to mess with his hair. He'd gotten taller in the last few years. He looked older too. Neri herself had changed a little too. Her tan had faded and she'd finally decided to cut her hair short from the heat, although now that she was back in Ista, she planned to let it grow out again. "Oh, but I learned a lot from the riders in Igen, I have to tell you about it some time."

Meanwhile, Bayeth was being her usual sweet self.
Gereth... Bayeth purred sweetly. How nice of you to come meet us. It's so good to see you again. We used to have classes together. Do you remember?
Neri rolled her eyes. How was it even possible that a dragon be nice to everyone except her own rider?

If R'yn was surprised by the embrace, his expression didn't show it. He studied her for a moment before slowly returning the gesture. He wasn't sure how to react to this. He was still used to the teasing Weyrling he remembered her being when she transferred. "I missed you, Neri," he said at last, moving to straighten his tunic awkwardly. "I do wish I'd had more warning," he glanced at Gereth pointedly. "I would have had Ticene come greet you, as well."

He paused, and hesitated. "Ista might not be the same as what you remember," he said. "We've had some...trouble since you transferred to Igen." The reasons for the worry lines on his forehead were clear, now. "We've been working to fix that, though," he added, dragging a hand through his hair. "It's been difficult, picking up the pieces."

I do not remember, Gereth confessed. Tell me about these classes.

When we were very young, our very first weyrling lessons.. she said. In fact, Bayeth didn't quite remember herself, but Neri spent the whole flight over here going on about her and Ry'n's days as young weyrlings, before she was transferred about 6 months after she impressed.
Oh, you don't remember me. she purred sadly. Well, I forgive you. I will just have to make a new impression.

"I missed you too." Neri said enthusiastically. "How is Ticene, are you.." Neri stopped suddenly. While she had been surprised to hear that R'yn was the new weyrleader, she had never given much thought to who the weyrwoman was. Yet, now that she thought of it, it wouldn't make sense for Rath to choose Gereth. Was that the 'trouble' R'yn mentioned? So, was Ticene...?

Neri caught his eye, a look of worry on her face and a sense of urgency in her voice. "R'yn, what happened to T'rel and Ky't? Where's Rath? She couldn't have..." Neri swallowed, unable to say it. "I would have heard."

Gereth paused for a long moment, green eyes whirling slowly in thought as he studied Bayeth. Mine speaks often of that time. Lessons when Thread came. When another was Weyrleader. But I do not remember. If we were friends, let us be friends again. I would like to remember you, Bayeth. The bronze paused, flicking his tail over his snout as he laid in the sand. The swimming is good here. Will you swim?

"Tic? She's good," R'yn began with a smile. Speaking of his weyrmate always made for good conversation. His eyes lit up, and he flashed Neri a much more comfortable smile. "She's busy most days, with being Weyrwoman. Calith..." His smile faded at her expression, and he hesitated. T'rel and Ky't? That was a subject he tended to avoid.

"Well, as for T'rel," he paused, "T'rel's fine! He's a wingleader. He has a daughter now, Merel. She's M'nie's." Another hesitation. R'yn was stalling. "You can speak to him, if you like," he said. "And Ky't... Well. I don't want to talk about her." He muttered at last. "What she did was cruel, and selfish. She faked betweening, you know. She's alive, at Fort. She--I don't know, Neri. I didn't think a Weyrwoman could do something like that. But she did. She crushed T'rel's heart, left the Weyr in ruins. We're still picking up the pieces and it's been turns."

Bayeth watched the bronze carefully to see how he would respond, shrewdly waiting to see if he could be of use or not. But when he answered that he would like to be friends, her eyes swirled blue and she purred.
Neri often tells me of how nice the water was here. I would love to swim, if you would like to show me.

While, Bayeth went on, apparently uninterested, Neri listened to R'yn with disbelief. While relief was the first emotion she felt -Rath had not gone between as she first feared- what R'yn was describing did not sound much better.

"She faked-" Neri was so appalled she was lost for words. She wished Ky't was here now so she could smack some sense into her, queenrider or no. Part of her didn't even want to believe what R'yn was saying, but she knew he wouldn't joke about something like this. Or, if he was, she'd kick him so hard he landed in the ocean. "What kind of rider would do something like that?" she asked. Not even as a Weyrwoman, not even as a Gold, simply as a dragonrider, the thought of putting her Weyr in danger should take precedent over all else.
Golds are like that. Bayeth's voice hissed in her ear. And here Neri thought she hadn't been listening. Now you see, we greens are so much better.

Neri shook her head. She was never as close to Ky't as she was to T'rel, but she was finding it hard to think of anything that justified such actions. "T'rel.." she muttered to herself softly. "I should go pay my regards to T'rel." Neri said, louder. After all, back when she was only a candidate, and he the weyrleader, T'rel had still befriended her. When she left, he was still in charge, now, she had to wonder if he even knew she was back.

The waters are nice here, Gereth agreed pleasantly. He couldn't remember Bayeth, other than little reminders provided by his rider. She had been one of his clutchmates. I will show you. Come, Bayeth! Perhaps Calith will swim, also. Entirely pleased with himself by slipping Calith into the conversation, the bronze carefully spread his wings. His golden mate was one of his favorite topics, while he could properly recall said gold's antics the day before, that was.

There is also good sunning on the shore, Bayeth. Shall we go now? He glanced at his rider, craning his neck to do so. Mine, I will leave you and Bayeth's now. We will swim!

"Faked," R'yn affirmed. "Shards, I don't know, Neri. When she got hurt during Threadfall, everyone thought she was going to die. T'rel was a mess. The entire Weyr was a mess. Everyone looked to him to fix it; you remember. I suppose that went to his head a bit. You know what he was like. Drills, lessons. Ky't wasn't able to return to Weyrwoman duties for a while due to scoring--and T'rel--he doesn't do well doing things on his own. You remember the Hatching. The feast, even. He looked for help." The bronze rider shrugged. "Anyone would have. Well, he fell for a bluerider. Well no... Shards, explaining this is difficult. He didn't, really. He loved Ky't even still. But she found out about it, I suppose. Some dimglowed healer must have said something. I know T'rel confessed to her, too. After that, she disappeared. Healers told us she'd gone between."

R'yn paused, shaking his head. He really couldn't excuse the former Weyrwoman's actions. Nor would he make any attempt to do so. "But more than a turn later, we had a transfer from Fort. He told us otherwise. T'rel went to go fetch K'yt from Fort--that was the morning Calith rose. At dawn, you know," a smirk appeared on R'yn's face. He was sure Neri remembered his hatred for early mornings. He gave a nod of understanding.

"You'll find him easily enough. Zelith's still the most talkative bronze in the Weyr."

Then, shall we go? Bayeth purred coyly, following Gereth. Neri, I'm leaving. she added sharply to her rider, who waved her off, too used to it to be upset.

"That was her reason?" Neri asked indignantly. "I hardly think that justifies it." She was surprised that Ky't would endanger the Weyr over something so trivial. She was suprised at T'rel too. Surprised, but not angry. Clearly she had missed a lot while she was gone, and the people here had faced many difficulties without her. She only wished she could have been here too, whatever small help she might have been.

Well, at least he said T'rel was doing well. If that was the sort of person K'yt was, he was better off without her, whatever he might feel for her still. Neri smiled nostalgically "It's nice to know some things never change."

"At dawn? I'm amazed Gereth got you up in time..." Neri teased, but trailed off. Thus far, she had made no mention of his recent promotion. In truth, she wasn't sure how she felt about it at first. The things she liked about the old R'yn were the same things that made her nervous about him as a leader: he was naive, childish, and a little too self-confident. Neri didn't whether she would have to congratulate or chastise him!

But the R'yn she saw now seemed older, still friendly, but the concern he had for the Weyr showed his responsibility as a leader. More than anything, his love for Ticene shone through his words. Yes, he would be a good Weyrleader after all. Finally, she tapped R'yn's arm in a light punch. "..but congratulations!" she said emphatically.

Gereth took off into the air, taking himself between before landing neatly on the shore. Come, Bayeth. The sand is warm, the waters are nice. It is good to swim.

R'yn nodded in agreement. "I don't think anything could justify it," he muttered. The Weyr had been on the brink of destruction. A bad move could have pushed it over the edge. It almost had. "I understand that she was emotionally and physically hurt. T'rel's actions weren't the best, and she might have needed some time away..." he hesitated. "Still, I think she could have said something. We would have helped."

R'yn paused, smirking. "The dragons are the only things that've remained the same," he said. And lucky they were. R'yn knew they would need a constant in the near future, just as they had needed one in the past.

"Hey, I woke up in plenty of time!" R'yn protested, teasing. "Besides, I don't think I would have been allowed to miss it, even if I wanted to. With all the noisy bronzes, the entire Weyr must have been woken up." Another pause, and he shot his friend a genuine smile. She was turns too late, but being congratulated by Neri meant something to him. "Thank you, Neri," he said. "But it wasn't anything I did," he added more playfully. "Gereth did the catching!"

Although excited to see her old friend, Neri was exhausted. All she wanted was to be shown to her Weyr and rest. She looked to Bayeth, who, in her hurry to go fly off with Gareth, hadn't even given Neri the chance to get her things.

Bayeth.. Neri entreated her sweetly.
Busy! she cut her off.
Neri ran a hand through her short blonde, annoyed. Shards, girl, don't you even want me to take off your riding straps before you go swimming?
I think I'll just sunbathe for now. She said, stubbournly folding her wings by the shore.

"Well, I seem to have been abandoned by my dragon." Neri sighed exasperatedly. Nothing new there (there was a running joke about it in Igen) but, then, did R'yn even know that? In thinking about how long she'd been gone, she had taken for granted that Bayeth was also gone all that time too. In fact, no one here had gotten the chance to get to know her at all, not even her own siblings. That was a little sad.. Neri at once felt a little worried for her dragon. Would she be able to make friends, as Neri had promised?

Suddenly aware that she had been staring in silence for some time now, Neri shook off her worry and smiled. Well, she didn't seem to be having and trouble thus far! She looked back at R'yn. "I'm starving! I'll bet you haven't eaten either," she joked, judging by his flustered appearance when he first met her, she'd guess he'd just woken up. "Shall we get something to eat? I've nothing else to do until Bayeth comes around."
