Awena was sitting on the ground, just under one of the many trees within the courtyard. She disliked the fiery heat of the Ista Weyr in comparison to her old Hold, but there was little use complaining about it. She simply sat there and watched as people walked by, unnoticed by all, taking tiny notes, memorizing the pattern of their steps. She felt rather pathetic for continuing to act like a startled animal, but she couldn't help it. She still thought that people looked at her as if she were less than the dirt that they trod upon. She didn't want to be beaten for simply breathing the same air as everyone else. What was so different about her? Yes, she'd been left in front of the gates of her old Hold right before Threadfall, but that didn't mean that she wasn't less human than another.

Awena wasn't the only one watching. A ways off amber eyes lay trained on the startled looking girl sizing her up. She was a frightened looking thing, how was she expected to survive in the Weyr if she was afraid of every little tiny thing? Or perhaps Hekate was merely reading too much into the girl's actions as the bright red haired girl rose to her own feet striding with confidence over to Awena and staring down at her.

"You're one of the other candidates correct?" She asked with a silky smile.

“Why doesn‘t a caged bird sing?”
Awena looked up at the girl that had asked her whether she was a candidate and simply stared at her for a long couple of minutes with her melt-your-heart brown eyes before she replied with a slightl incline of her head, "As a matter of fact, I am." She had to stare at the girl for a moment longer before she realized that she didn't know much about this girl whereas she knew plenty about the others within the Weyr. "And you, too, are another candidate if I am assuming correctly."

A bright green blur raced over the heads of those walking through the courtyard. The creature’s fast movements and sudden turns weren't enough to cause much attention, it was a Weyr the creature was hardly a novel thing to be seen and so by most was ignored or dismissed after a glance. This suited the blur just fine, it was not interested in them it was looking and they were only obstacles currently. The blur halt in mid-air, snapping wings open and flicking backwards with a speed that was enough to convince viewers they had heard bones snap. The green arrow plummeted downwards at a worrying rate, it needed to pull out of its death plummet, it would surely collide with to ground in seconds.

The was a slight flick of movement and then the creature was soaring upwards again, a small cloud of dust and a miniscule groove the only signs of any disturbance. The blur ceased it's darting and instead moved directly to a tree, jumping through the branches to rest on one at the bottom; finally holding still enough for a clear sight to be had. The green firelizard even when stationary was constantly in motion; her wings flicked, her tail swung back and forth as it hung over a branch and her head was constantly turning this way and that as she examined her prize clutched in her claws.

The medium-sized, near fluorescent green, by the name of Playmate, turned a small object over in her claws with as much dexterity as one could expect from a firelizard. The prize her death drop had been for was simply a smooth and somewhat shiny pebble. One the green was now thoroughly inspecting, she turned it over, looked at it from first one angle and then another. Finally she gave a tiny snort of dissatisfaction and simply let go of the pebble. Unthinking for the welfare of the two unprotected heads beneath the branch that the pebble was no heading for.

“Why doesn‘t a caged bird sing?”
Just as suddenly as she heard something land on the branch above her, Awena looked up to see something that she hadn't seen before and was about to ask whether the standing girl, Hekate, could tell what it was before a pebble dropped down and landed on her head with a light thunk. She reached up and rubbed her head in the spot the pebble had made contact and stood up, taking a step back to get a better view at her attacker when she realized that it was no more than a firelizard; a creature that she desired as much as she wanted to Impress a dragon. Alas, she wouldn't try to steal one or pay someone off to receive one of the creatures. What use would a candidate have for one, anyway? Especially as one as lowly as herself. "Oy! Check the ground before you drop something!" She scolded the smaller cousin of the dragons before she smiled a little at its dissatisfied eyes. Obviously, whatever it had dropped wasn't good enough for the creature's taste.

Playmate had just begun to preen herself when she was interrupted. She was far too irritated by the pebble and it not living up to expectation to go flying about again, she had been perfectly content to stay right there and check she was her usual pretty self. It seemed though others were less content to let her be. Hearing a shout the green raised her head a looked about a few times before looking down over the side of the branch at the two people below her.

The firelizard chirruped her confusion quietly to herself, what were they making a fuss about? Playmate was only a green and as such not the most intelligent creature around; she could be cunning at times and seemed very good at finding things, but only when she wanted too. The rider to whom she was bonded had come to the conclusion without the bond with the firelizard he would never be able to get her to do anything; she only did what he wanted some of the time anyway.

Deciding that whatever they had found so interesting was worth the interruption to her preening for just a while Playmate picked herself up and scurried down the side of the tree. Small claws gripping the bark and stopping her from falling rather unceremoniously to the ground. She stopped partway down the tree's trunk and lifted her head to peer at the two-legged things before here, eyes whirling quickly as she tilted her head from side to side to examine them. Even from this level she couldn't tell what had caused an outburst like that.

"Of course." Hekate replied with a bright feline smile and a nod of her head a low purring chuckle rising from her throat at the green's actions. "Pesty little things aren't they? Oh well life would be far less interesting without them now wouldn't it?" She mused glancing at the firelizard then back to the girl.

"How long have you been at the Weyr?" Hekate asked motioning to Awena her bright amber eyes seeming to glitter with mischievousness.

“Why doesn‘t a caged bird sing?”
Awena couldn't help but chuckle a little at the creature's examinatino of the two candidates and wondered what the creature was really thinking, if it could think human-like thoughts. She was so interested in the creature that she barely heard Hekate's words about firelizards being pesky creatures. She looked to the other girl and shrugged a little, "But I've heard that they are very intelligent and have prevented plenty of disasters in the past. Alas, that's just from the rumors that I've heard back in my old Hold." She then heard the question about hwo long she'd lived in the Weyr and shrugged, "I've learned to stop counting the days since I was dragged here, but... perhaps half a turn? Probably not even that long."
