Cocoon is a floating continent.It floats in the sky above the land of Gran Pulse like a low-hanging moon. Cocoon is a futuristic paradise filled with highly advanced technology which protects it against the supposed intruders from the planet below, which is Gran Pulse. It is ruled by the Sanctum. The Sanctum is the theocracy controlling the continent of Cocoon. The Sanctum is Cocoon's government. The fal'Cie give's Cocoon power to float above Gran Pulse. The fal'Cie are supernatural beings. They are responsible for the creation and maintenance of the land where humans dwell, and indirectly govern their lives.











Gran Pulse , also known simply as Pulse to the citizens of Cocoon, is the giant world which lies underneath the floating continent in Final Fantasy XIII. Gran Pulse can be considered the conflicting parallel of Cocoon, it is a world of natural evolution where animals and plants are free to grow to tremendous sizes. In Final Fantasy XIII, Gran Pulse features an open world design with a more free style of gameplay, a stark contrast to the more story driven and linear experience of Cocoon.
