I haven't seriously played a horror game since Resident Evil 2 on the PSX (RE5 doesn't really count imo), and I've only ever played a demo of the first Silent Hill. The question is: is the HD collection worth it for anything other than its nostalgia value?

I played Silent Hill 2 for about half an hour two years ago. I was too scared to go on. I am bad at survival horror.
Which is why I can say with confidence that Resident Evil 5 is great.
The Metal Gear HD collection was really well done, so maybe this one will be too? I'd say give it a shot if you wanted to try them, probably the most convenient way to do it.

To clarify, RE5 was fun, I just don't really see it as being horror so much as an action game with sorta-zombies.

Exactly! I could play and enjoy Resident Evil because there was no fear, just me, punching the s**t out of a boulder! RE5 is one of my favorite games.

What drove me mad was when that one girl kept burning up ammo and generally being stupid.

I was fortunate enough to always have a bro handy to play with me. No infuriating AI here! Just smooth sailing and failed quick times because all my friends are unfamiliar with the PS3 controller.

I got a friend who like the originals, he said they changed a bunch of stuff. New voices, new sounds, apparently they messed up the fog or something. He might just be biased.
