Hey there!

Do you have a BC character that you love to play? That you didn't have enough time with before the shop closed? Do you have an Original Character you'd love to roleplay with here?

We do, too. We know how you feel. That's why we've started this forum in Chopsticks. We want to bring back the excitement of plotting, the love of your characters you've undoubtedly lost due to lazy artists and shopmanagers--characters you paid for and spent time working on!

We understand the unfairness, we've been through it all. We've had shops suddenly end due to drama, to sheer lack of time, for lack of motivation--but that's why we're here, isn't it? You want to play your characters.

I'm afraid we won't be able to promise art. We're currently in the process of hiring some artists.

That aside, welcome to Chopsticks! Keep in mind that we will be having a mixture of shops here.

---

Rules:

1. Have fun
2. Use any journal format you'd like--preferably one close to the shop your characters are from.
3. Don't take anything ICly personally; we're all friends here! Just because someone's character doesn't like your character (Hey, your character might be a d**k to my character!) doesn't mean someone doesn't like you.
4. Keep it nice. If I catch anyone being cruel to anyone within this guild (On Gaia or off Gaia) they will be banned.

Howdy everyone! Thanks for taking the time to read these sections. We don't try to be sticklers for rules, so we try to make them short and sweet and include only the important stuff.

However, for those of you who are new to the character-development scene, wanting to improve, or just want to be sure that everything goes as smoothly as possible here are some things to keep in mind!

Ok, so I was going to type up a lot of awesome stuff to keep in mind when you're roleplaying....but I'm incredibly lazy. And I found this awesome thread. So there's that.

I guess I really should put some Shelly-shaped advice in here. So here it be-

1 - Don't be self-centered. Roleplaying is about interactions between two characters. Neither of these characters should be you or who you wish you could be. So try to keep in mind what your character wants and needs. But also keep in mind what the person you're playing with wants. See the next post for the Godmoding section.

2 - Character development is just as important as developing your writing. It's ok to start off thinking that your character John Smith is going to be an agoraphobic recluse with an obsession with bobble-heads, then later realizing that his agoraphobia is going to make it nearly impossible for him to interact with anyone (i.e. KEEP A RP GOING). So you tone down the agoraphobia to just some PTSD or severe introversion, or perhaps he just hates having attention on himself and was born with a blushing problem that he's embarrassed of. Voila. Now John Smith will be able to meet the future Mrs John Smith. Or maybe his future roommate who's an awful pyromaniac. ....damn, now I want to play this out. MOVING ON.

3 - Inspiration vs cosplaying. There is a difference between the two. For instance, I have a character who started off being an inspiration from the movie Dorian Gray, but I added his own little elements, took into consideration his bizarre sociopath of a cousin, and....well, I still wasn't satisfied with him until I decided to add in a pinch of Beast. We love love love to see cosplays and inspired-by's alike, but please give credit where it is due and add your own flair to things when it is needed.

4 - Drama vs DRAMA. Drama between characters is awesome. Drama between writers is not. As Thali has said, harassment will not be accepted in this guild. However, we are not going to play the he/she said game. We will not ban someone because you don't like them, because one of their characters bullies yours, or for other reasons that you simply just need to get over. But we WILL get suspicious if all of someone's characters seem to have their own inexplicable hatred for all of yours.

(Remembering your manners)

Godmoding. You'd be surprised how many "advanced" roleplayers don't understand what this is. it's not playing god, it's not just killing a character without permission. It can mean that your character's doing something impossible. If your character is a magical girl with all sorts of epic powers whom never dies and is immune to all other magic and other harm--well. Let's just say no one's going to want to roleplay with you.

However, if your character tries to force something on someone else--rather than assuming that the other character has done what your character would like, we'd prefer if you did this. "___ felt that Howl needed to do this. He moved to take Howl's hand, and shoved the glass of water at him." I've had people force sexual orientations on my characters. I know from experience that being the person godmoded on is lame.

Instead of "Howl drank the water." Again, Godmoding. We understand the desire not to go through every little detail--this is where asking the person you're roleplaying with if you have permission to godmode.

If your character magically changes ages whenever someone tries to compare ages with your character--that's godmoding too! Drystan might be a bajillion years old, but we don't expect your human character to suddenly become an immortal soul age a bajillion and one.

If your character has the ability to avoid all harm, to succeed in everything they do no matter what the danger is--well. Again, you aren't going to have many people roleplaying with you.

Remembering manners (2)

Remember what your parents taught you about saying something nice. I've experienced cruelty when it comes to roleplaying, and I certainly don't want to see it here.

1. I don't know about you, but I've been picked on because I write female characters as well as male characters. Many people would state that this is because I'm advanced in my writing skill, that I have no limits and that I am flexible--but there are some (and rest assured, they'll be banned from this guild if I see this happening) that will mock others because of this. I don't want someone roleplaying a female character and being made fun of because they aren't writing a male in a certain roleplay.

2. Don't make fun of people newer to roleplaying! If they're writing a sue, and don't realize they're writing a sue--encourage them. Perhaps suggest changes they can make to their characters. We've all been there.

3. Don't try to force romance! If a character falls for another character, it'll happen. My character may be in love with someone else. PMing me (or anyone else for that matter) demanding a romance is silly.

4. Be patient, don't rush others. Of course, if they take over a month to respond; go ahead, give them a poke. See if they're still alive.
