Nyyrikki was pretty much on his own today. He hadn't even seen Danny, but he assumed she'd skipped off to see Roch, as was normal. That left him to have a much lazier day than usual, because he didn't have an energetic demoness dragging him by the hand everywhere. It was nice to have slow days like these, sometimes, because he got a better chance to just... absorb the environment.

And absorb he did. Such a heavily forested area was fascinating. He was so used to the school and to the city in which his parents lived that experiencing a place so wild was like a brand new experience. Everything seemed so savage here, and it was... exciting. Such a different lifestyle. Would the next island be this wild, or another experience entirely?

The one problem that plagued him was that the real life of these horsemen was in the sky. The flew everywhere, while he was forced to walk along the ground. How was that getting the true experience? It didn't take him long to decide that he needed to get to the highest point possible so he could see what they saw. Unfortunately, the point happened to be the observation point, which looked to precarious that Rikki spent ten minute just walking around the trunk of the tree, looking up at all the spears and branches, and the flimsy little ladder, and deciding that he hated life.

Had the ladder been firmly in place, he wouldn't be so worried. However, he could see it - see it - waving in the wind higher up. How could that possibly be safe? It was clear that, once again, this hadn't been made with winglessness in mind. If it had, he wouldn't feel so certain that climbing this would be a death sentence.

But he was determined to see this island from a birds eye view, so he grabbed on to the ladder tight and started on his way up. It took him less time than he'd imagined it would, probably because he refused to look down. At all. And he just kept pushing forward without pause. He struggled on to the rickety platform and had to suck in a gasp of air.

It was gorgeous up here. Everything was so green, and in the distance Rikki could make out the sparkling waters of the surrounding ocean. It was a bit breezy, and colder this high up, but it was worth it to see the way the leaves danced in the wind. He turned in a small circle and let out a low whistle. This was what the ones with wings saw every day? Unbelievable. He'd never really wanted to have wings before, but if this was what he was missing, sign him up.

Movement caught his eye and he turned in time to see a few warrior take off from perches in other tall trees or platforms. They were fully armored, just like the ones Danny and him had seen not long ago. As he watched their massive wings carry them toward the portal and saw their excitement he had to wonder what they were heading off to do. Did war horsemen get all armored up just to go for a few drinks? He doubted it. Which begged the question - what were they planning to battle?

He supposed it could easily just be friendly sparring between the clans, but he couldn't even begin to be sure.

Something caught his eye as it glinted off the floor of the platform and he turned to see something small and round lying there. As he approached it, he realized it was like the little token he'd found the other day with Danny. What the hell were these things? If he didn't know better, he'd think they were some kind of coin, but didn't everyone use pumpkin seeds?

He knelt to pick it up, but just as his fingers brushed it the token fell through the cracks and to the mossy ground. Even if he went down to look for it, he probably wouldn't find it. Suckish.

He took one last look around at the tops of the trees and let out a dreamy sigh. He didn't want to leave, but the breeze was getting abrasive and he still had things he wanted to do with Danny. Which first involved finding Danny - a task of champion proportions.

He began to descend on the wobbly ladder, slower this time. For some reason, descending ladders always seemed more difficult than going up. Later, he would blame the next experience on his slowed state, because if he'd gotten down faster he never would have been blasted by that gust of wind. He clung to the ladder for dear life as the gust buffeted around him, and gave a startled cry as a spear dislodged from nearby and slammed home in the branch right next to his head. It seemed to go on forever, and all Rikki could think about was all the things he'd never done, and all the things he wished he hadn't done. Like checking out Roch's boobs that one awkward time they were both ghouls. He really shouldn't have done that.

Even after the wind died out and the ladder stopped swaying, it took physical effort for Rikki to uncurl himself from the rungs and get moving again. When he finally did, he descended so fast it felt like a blur. There was no way he was going to be caught in another gust. His knees shook a bit as he adjusted himself to solid ground, and he decided that it probably wasn't the best idea to go back up to the observation platform.
