I am debating between investing in items or in an aquarium. What do you think?
I have about 5 mil, so that's why I'm kind of leaning towards an aquarium.

After going through the calculations, I honestly believe that aquarium fish on the marketplace are overpriced.

Yes, you might make a profit on some of them. But you also have to factor in how much time you'd spend making sure you're on aquarium lists, getting bumped up, keeping up exposure, etc.

For investment versus time, playing the marketplace is MUCH more profitable.

Items without a doubt. From what I gathered from those that keep tanks, it takes ALOT of work to just break even. With items you just have to choose a safe hoard and just sit on it until its time to sell. Tank owners pretty much need to stay on top of their aquariums 24/7 and make sure their tank gets constant exposure if they want to make a profit. If you put in 1mill toward a tank, but the fish you bought are hardly earning back what they cost due to very poor exposure in the forums, that's alot of gold down the drain that could have been used on a rig bundle or an E.I.

Aquariums take more than money to be successful - they take time.

Right now, there are a LOT of good tanks out there. Which means there are a lot of tanks glowing at the same time yours is. If your glow thread doesn't get bumped, I don't care if you do have an all-Airshark tank, you are likely to get 0 players - because there are other all-Airshark tanks that ARE getting bumped.

It also takes time to play other people's tanks, which is one of the best ways to get people to play your tank. Or post in chat threads so people know you - many times people play your tank because it is YOUR tank, not because you've got the bestest tank EVAR. Because there's at least another dozen or three tanks out there just like yours. Being known is how you get invitations to Booty Grab threads and guilds and the like.

This is why I suggest that if people decide they want to make this committment, they start with a "starter tank" of B-grade mini monsters so that they have a chance of breaking even while getting established. Since the tank only lives a couple of weeks you can also get a feel for if this is something you want to do longer term without a huge investment of capital.

I'm not going to say that aquariums can't be lucrative - they can be, even middle of the road tanks like mine. But I'm not going to sugarcoat the amount of time they take to make them pay off - even now, when I've been doing this for years, I can't just sit back and coast or I will watch the playership numbers drop like proverbial sack of wet cement.

And yes, right now, fish are hella overpriced in the MP for various reasons I can speculate on, but this is already getting long.
