Just getting this quest up so I can work on it. More to come!

Name: Tamsyn
Nicknames: Tam, Tammy if someone wants to annoy her
Dust Essence: Mirage
Gender: Female
Powers:
Mirage - An actual mirage works by the way the light shines through air that is of vastly different temperatures. It results in something appearing slightly above or below where it actually is; Tamsyn can create mirages by causing a sudden shift in the air temperature to be vastly different from what the air around it is. This is limited by proximity, in that she can't alter the air temperature of a location that's too far away - in fact, it's easiest for her to simply alter the air temperature around her, making herself appear to others as if she were off of where she actually is. This has a very useful application in fights, in that it can be very difficult for someone to tell just where she actually ends - of course, if they're aiming for her middle, it won't really matter. What is useful in such situations is if she can cause the mirage to surround the other person, then that person's entire vision is then off: they might think the ground is several inches higher than it actually is, or other similar things. This generally results in uncoordinated movements and clumsiness. When she's a child, she has difficulty controlling it. Tamsyn would often alter the temperature of the air around herself without even realizing it; used to the constant mirage around her, she never displayed the same clumsiness as other people - but that wouldn't help her in crowds. In crowds, this ability would make it very uncomfortable for her, as people would constantly be bumping into her or stepping on her feet due to the mirage.

Temperature - Related to the same power that allows her to create a mirage, she can dramatically raise or lower the temperature of objects just by touch. It allows her to turn any metal item dangerously hot, or dangerously cold (ever get your tongue stuck to a frozen pole? Same principle). As a side effect of her work at adjusting temperatures, she is unaffected by any temperature that she raises or lowers in an object.

Appearance

Eyes: Dark-Brown
Hair: Black, thick and slightly curly. Her hair just covers ears, but is a bit longer in the back. Tamsyn considers her hair a large annoyance, as even at it's short length it is consistently messy.
Skin: Tanned
Clothes: If there was one characteristic that could be applied to any outfit Tamsyn wears, it would be 'loose'. She prefers everything she wears to be comfortable, and finds the idea of any form-fitting type of clothing utterly constricting. Her preference for warm weather is also made clear in the clothing she wears, as it tends to be of light, breathable materials, although she tends to wear long sleeves and pants.
General Appearance: Tamsyn has always had a relatively androgynous appearance. Keeping her hair short has encouraged that, as has her clothing choices. She avoids any of what she would identify as a 'feminine frippery', sticking to comfortable clothing devoid of excessive decoration. Her normal style could simply be characterized as loose; wide sleeves, loose pants, and nothing that constricts around her body. Tamsyn wants to be free to move around, and finds tight clothing both troublesome for movement, as well as just inducing a sense of being trapped.

Personality: Reserved, Cynical, Trickster, Easily Amused, Amoral

Tamsyn has an unusual juxtaposition of personality traits: she is a cynic and pessimist in the sense that she always expects the worst, but she finds it all amusing. Whether something horrible does or doesn't happen, she finds humor in the situation. Not to say that she is always laughing or smiling, as she rarely laughs; a little smirk and a sly comment might reveal her amusement in a dark situation, but not laughter. Her sense of humor is odd, to say the least, as she finds things amusing that others might not.

One display of this are the little tricks that she likes to play on people. Tamsyn would never deign to play a full-out obvious prank, but she loves to do little things and see how long it takes someone to realize she had a hand in it. You keep leaving your keys in strange places yet don't remember doing so? Perhaps it's Tamsyn shifting things around. This extends to any little trickery she might manage; she will create playful games and see how long it takes someone to figure it out - but she rarely straight out lies. A lie is too boring for her, too easy to disprove; so instead she will lead a person in a merry little circle, avoiding direct answers and misdirecting them instead. This is most obvious in the game she plays when someone mistakes her for a boy; she finds the preoccupation people have with what gender someone is rather amusing, but also confusing: she just doesn't understand why it would matter to anyone. So rather than admit to being one gender or the other, she continues her interaction with them while avoiding actually admitting to being either. If they do discover she's a girl after thinking she was a boy, she responds with mock innocence and confusion: "You thought I was a boy, really? Why would you think that?"

Tamsyn's enjoyment of trickery and games has occasionally led her, to the embarrassment and frustration of her guardian, to partake in what might be considered street-cons. Despite all efforts by her guardian, she finds no problem with what she does: if she happens to trick a few people out of their money, she's only doing them a service! This has, oddly enough, led to a more legitimate interest: money. In particular, she is fascinated by coins; she enjoys searching out more unique ones, and in the process of studying the histories of particular coins, she has grown to enjoy studying history in general.

Her demonstration of humor is in the same vein that she demonstrates any emotion; subtly, with nothing too ostentatious or loud. Tamsyn's emotions tend to run mildly, with even her temper being displayed in a quiet fashion. If someone offends or angers her, her response is not to yell or even appear angry; she just begins to ignore them. If they make her feel that way, she lets her anger simmer and wants nothing to do with them. Despite wanting nothing to do with them, she won't outright shun them - she will just treat them with the minimal amount of interaction required to keep them from making a scene. Someone making a scene with ostentatious displays of emotion is something she despises, no matter what emotion it is they are displaying. This tends to mean that when her friendships end, it is because she got upset and rather than explain herself to them and risk such a display, she hides her anger and let the friendship wither. The types of friends Tamsyn is likely to maintain are the sorts of people who do make a scene, despite how much she hates it: making a scene means that she has to explain and discuss what actually upset her, meaning she wouldn't be able to just let the friendship wither as she is inclined to do.

While she does like people - life would be boring without them - she becomes very uncomfortable in crowds. That relates to two things: she dislikes being touched, and people have a tendency to become clumsy around her due to her abilities. Her dislike of touch is such that while she can handle it if it's someone she trusts, such as her guardian, physical contact tends to be fleeting. It is one sign of her affection for someone, however, that she will permit those fleeting touches - and perhaps even initiate them.

Tamsyn sees no shame in admitting to her discomfort with touch, but she does have something she is ashamed of: she is afraid of the dark. A part of this is due to how her abilities work: she creates a mirage by adjusting the temperature of air, and then the light refracting through it will lead to the mirage; when her surroundings are dim and shadowy however, her mirages don't work nearly as well. The dark makes her feel vulnerable, which she attempts to assuage in a very particular way: hiding. Rather than sleeping in an open space in a large dark room, or relying on a dim light source, she would locate a small, cramped space. This space could be a cabinet, a closet; in fact, as a child her guardian would often wake up in the morning to find that her sleeping in a cupboard. While she learns to be less obvious about her hiding places as she gets older, at first it is quite obvious: stacks of dishes sitting out next to a closed cupboard are a rather clear sign. Once she is alone and in a small space, she finds the darkness much less intimidating.

Likes: Mischief, clever conversation, warm weather, money
Dislikes: Crowds, touch, darkness
Hobbies: Mischief, cooking, coin-collecting

Name: Merrik
Gender: Male
Age: 32
Profession: Owner of a luxury imported goods shop
Personality:
If someone had to use a single word to define Merrik, it would be fairly easy: bold. Meeting someone is an easy thing for him, as he greets people and treats them as if they were old friends, seemingly with no fear of rejection or awkwardness. That tends to work very well for him, as even new customers to his shop swiftly feel welcome. Never lacking for confidence does have a down-side, however: he always thinks he's right. Some would simple call him stubborn, but others would say it verges on self-righteousness. Combine that with a strong sense of right and wrong, and he has a tendency of getting into trouble by trying to help people. Anyone who knows him would agree that Merrik is protective of his friends - and more than that, anyone he perceives as needing help.

His stubbornness and sense of righteousness tends to lead to conflict with Tamsyn. He can't seem to get her to see things in the clear-cut right and wrong way that he sees them. On the other side of things, Tamsyn is often frustrated by the opposite problem: she sees the world as rarely having anything purely 'right' or 'wrong', and is often exasperated by her guardian not being able to comprehend this. Merrik's stubbornness has been the end to many of his previous relationships, but faced with a child he is raising, he seems more willing to compromise (albeit grudgingly).

Despite his childhood spent traveling - or perhaps because of it -Merrik doesn't seem very interested in going out and traveling anymore. He loves discussing other people's travels, or even telling stories from his childhood, but he is very firm about staying put. He could even be called a homebody, as long as 'home' was referring to the town as a whole: he's a very social person, and if not working, is often out socializing. While he is friendly with most people, a distinguishing marker of his friends is that once he gets to know someone, he often begins to playfully tease them. There is a certain element of mischievousness in his interactions with his friends.

While he does spend quite a bit of time socializing, his life is really centered around his shop. Merrik loves working in the shop, in particular focusing on the social aspects of it. The only thing he dislikes about it is managing the finances. He is certainly capable of it, but that doesn't mean he enjoys it. Disliking managing finances has led him to contemplate hiring an assistant just so that he could let them handle that entire side of it, but he hasn't been able to find anyone he's trusts enough for that position.

History:
His mother was a traveling merchant who specialized in buying and selling luxury goods in different lands, and she always kept him with her while traveling. They most often traveled by horse, but were rarely alone; while they did not work with any other merchants in any steady manner, they often travel with other travelers, seeking safety in numbers. Not all of these travelers were fellow merchants, but there was a camaraderie that existed between his mother and the other small-time traveling merchants. Despite the constant traveling, they often saw and were traveling with familiar faces. Merrik never knew his father, or in fact any blood-relations beyond his mother, but he never lacked a sense of family, because of this. That extended beyond other traveling merchants, as well: his mother had a warmth and friendliness to her that led to close ties in towns. One such tie was formed with Callum, an older man who ran a shop that focused on selling luxury goods from distant locations, in Aimes.

Merrik continued traveling with his mother until he was a teenager, when during one of their visits Callum made a request of them: it was getting more difficult for him to get around, and he needed help with the shop. Merrik became his apprentice, and as he got older, was gradually handed more and more responsibility for the shop, before Callum eventually announced he was handing the shop over to him. While Merrik now owns the shop, that doesn't mean that Callum is never around; in fact, Callum is often a fixture of the shop, resting in a chair while chatting with customers. His mother has continued to travel, seeming restless if she stays too long in any one place. He still sees her, as she makes his shop one of her frequent stops to sell goods.
