Recently I've been feeling tension and some pain in my jaw after playing. Usually it just goes away within a half hour of me stopping but today the slight twinges have been lingering for hours. I'm afraid it might be a symptom of TMJ. Does anyone here have TMJ and have any advice on the matter? I'm really nervous. I do not think the pain is from an endurance issue. I know the difference between sore embouchure muscles and a sore jaw. To be specific the pain is in the back of my jaw where my back teeth are. Does this sound like something I should be concerned about? Or should I just wait and see if the pain comes back?

Hi! I do have TMJ and what you are saying sounds like what happens to me. My jaw hurts when I move it and occasionally my jaw will pop out of the socket. Also, my teeth in the back of my mouth, on both sides, always hurt. But, I dont think you should just wait to see if it goes away, it could be a bad thing to do. In my case, if I hadn't gone to my dentist, in a couple years I would most likely have had to have jaw surjury. However, please don't think I am trying to scare you, this is just my experience with TMJ.

I hope you figure out what it wrong, it's horrible to be in band with TMJ. I play in the drumline and PIT in marching band and then I play flute in my spare time and I had to stop playing my flute because it hurt so much!

P.S. If the pain is really bad, and it hurts to open your jaw even a little, what I found helps in that situation, is to just sit doing something relaxing with a ice pack pressed on my jaw and then switch to a heat compressor.
