You are the apple...

ScarletFrost
Why they celebrate the birth of Jesus in the dead of winter when--if you honestly do the math without an covert motive--it turns out he was born in fall (and John the baptist was born in the spring, 6 months earlier).

That was the doing of a... I think he was a priest, if my memory serves me correctly. He decided to choose that specific time to combat other religious ceremonies he felt were evil or whatever. I haven't heard the explanation in a while so my memory is a little fuzzy, but I think that was the gist of it.

ScarletFrost
Why they pray to statues and pictures of Mary and the Saints. Isn't that called idolatry in "pagan" religions?

^This.

ScarletFrost
Hell. Seriously, I don't get it. If God loves everyone, why would he send ANYONE to eternal damnation for 70 years of sin? Kinda seems out of proportion.

You said you're a Christian and you're speaking of the Catholic views, and I don't know much on that, but what're your views on it as a Christian?

And I approve of your description of the "why do bad things happen to good people" argument lol

and I am your core.

Still. It doesn't seem like a very prudent thing to do for any priest to reinterpret significant religious facts. Maybe it's just me but that seems somewhat...blasphemous.

Hell is a predominant motif in a lot of different religions.

I have always believed that when you're dead, you're dead until either the First or Second Resurrection. After the Second Resurrection is the White Throne Judgement, where those willing to accept a second chance at salvation get it, and those who consciously reject God are burned in the Lake of Fire, which is the second and absolute death. No eternity of misery. Not even an ounce of suffering. And it's not arbitrary either--you can't accidentally end up in the Lake of Fire or get tricked into it or sell your soul to it for instant gratification. It's also kinda outlined in Revelation in pretty significant detail.

And I can almost hear the lighters flickering ready to start flaming me for this. I know it's not conventional or even widely palitable, but I always found it more logical and more comforting than thinking about people suffering for millennial or watching helplessly from heaven while their loved ones struggle. And, you know, it's kinda in the bible in black and white. I find that hard to argue with.

I heard originally, Hell only meant being away from God's presence when you die... And I guess that didn't sound bad enough so we amped it up during the medieval ages.

Just because you love something doesn't mean you never punish it for doing something wrong (ex: pets). With that said, I do think with technology and advancement of civilization, the rules are probably a little more leniant. I do think Hell probably would have a time limit and then you get reincarnated. At least that'd be my model. The Buddhist book of the dead is similar. Basically you are torn apart over and over until you finally accept your a just a concious and nothing, and thats when you get to move on.

My idea of "Why does God let bad things happen to good people" falls into his infinite life. If heaven is forever as in billions of years, what's a couple of decades of discomfort. Then throw in hell and I'm pretty sure that'll cover the punishing the bad people.
