Life on the Flotilla
(2171 to 2189)
“Life used to be so easy. Back on the Flotilla, you didn’t have to ask yourself whether the noise outside was a broken machine or someone getting ready to break down your door. You didn’t have to watch your shadows either.”

Zuri’Vaelan nar Tonbay was born, like many of her Quarian peers, to a small family. She had a mother and a father who were there for her when they could, and an “uncle” who would look after her when they couldn’t.

It was not an unusual sight on the Tonbay to see Zuri as an almost constant companion of her uncle. Both Zuri’s parents were busy people- both were marines who were no stranger to the geth-filled battlefields. Unlike the other adults who were generally occupied with running the Tonbay or doing other errands and jobs, Zuri’s uncle (Garhi’Dal vas Tonbay) took it upon himself to serve as a caregiver and occasional maintenance worker.

In his youth, Garhi had fought alongside Zuri’s father. However, during one attack, the Garhi’s suit had been punctured and one of his legs had been broken. For many, such an occurrence would have been a death sentence, but Garhi had been lucky. Not only had he been fortunate enough to be part of a squad that wouldn’t stand for abandoning a squad mate to die, but he managed to have a strong enough will to keep him alive long enough to get back to safety. In the end, while he barely survived the ordeal, Garhi ended up with his body being greatly weakened and, once his leg had healed, a very bad limp that will never go away. As he could no longer contribute, to the Tonbay and the rest of the Flotilla, as he had in the past, Garhi did what his body allowed him and the rest of the Saleni's crew had no complaints. After all, the Quarian had fought off death and won when many would not, and how could they complain when he offered the best that his body could offer?

While Garhi was one of the young Zuri's main companions, he was far from being the only one. Growing up, Zuri had a number of friends that were around her own age. Most notably are several who remained in contact with her even after her pilgrimage began to take longer than their own. Currently, two Quarian men are counted among Zuri's contacts with the Migrant Fleet- Dela'Noran (Vas Moreh) and Leeto'Ahshal (Vas Neema).

The Pilgrimage
(2190 to 2194)
"I knew what I was getting into when I went to Omega. Well, I thought I knew. I don’t think anyone could ever have imagined that this was going to happen."

Back on the Flotilla, there were numerous warnings to young Quarians about to go on their pilgrimage to stay away from Omega. Like many of her predecessors, Zuri went there and learned just how many of those warnings were true.

At the age of 19, Zuri left for Omega. With the number of ships that came and went, in Zuri's mind, there had to be a need for people with ship repairing skills. Furthermore, due its reputation, working on Omega would be cheap and wouldn't require her to fill out a lot of paperwork. Combined with the tech-savvy reputation that came with being a Quarian, how could should lose?

What she hadn't taken into account was that she wasn't the only one who had figured that out. When she arrived in Omega, she found that prices were far more competitive than she thought. While it might be easy to buy something cheap at the market, it was next to impossible to sell without either being undercut by someone else or being stuck lowering the price to where there's no profit made at all.

However, during her struggles on Omega, Zuri wasn't alone. She ended up running into a slightly older Quarian pilgrim who had made the same mistake as she a year before. Tired of their circumstances, the two ended up banding together and after a year or two of work, ended up being able to make and gather enough resources (as well as money) to get themselves back to the flotilla.

------------------------------------

Formal Speech- Used with everyone; All day, every day.
”I may not be with the Flotilla, but I am still a Marine.”

Starting in her childhood, Zuri has always spoken and acted more formal than most. She speaks that way out of force of habit rather than as an attempt to distance herself from others. If she's asked to tone it down, Zuri will usually do her best to comply, but... Don't be too surprised if a "Sir" or "Ma'am" somehow gets slipped in.

While it may have been some time since she last was actually part of the chain of command, Zuri's work as a bodyguard for a "self-exiled" Hanar has helped to reinforce her manners.

It also doesn't help that Zuri's translator isn't entirely up to date. Recently created slang comes across as gibberish to her, so unsurprisingly, she doesn't use it. She's tried to use the slang that her translator supports and has found the result to be more than a little... awkward.

The Ends Justify the Means.
”So long as I achieve my goals, I do not care what I have to do. I have already broken a few laws; what makes you think that breaking one more will matter?”

Since she left the Flotilla, Zuri's been more than a little tired of having to play by the rules all the time, especially since doing so has lost her more than a few friends.

As far as she's concerned,

A Little Crazy? Maybe...
"Extreme, Sir? Not at a- Well, when you put it that way..."

By a non-Quarian's standards, Zuri is rather reckless, with a tendency towards getting carried away. By Quarian standards... Well, there'd be at least some suspicion that something isn't quite right with her.

Say It With A Straight Face.
"You thought I was being serious, Sir? I am surprised that you cannot recognize a joke when you hear one."

Zuri's voice, unfortunately, is rather monotonous. This, combined with her face being hidden, can make it rather hard to tell what she's feeling without her outright stating it.
Not that this keeps her from cracking the occasional joke.

Upon their return to the Flotilla, Kael joined the crew of the Qwib Qwib, with a much enamored Zuri following close behind.

Behind Enemy Lines
(21XX to 21XX)
“Quote.”

Once Zuri became an adult in the eyes of the Flotilla, there was little doubt as to what her role would be. Even without the lessons on survival that Omega taught her, she was a more than capable fighter- as far as Quarians went.

At the age of 27, Zuri found herself at a point of uncertainty.

Quarian Marine, Looking For Work.
(2182 to Present)
“Only serious responses, please. Not joking; Will not take off suit.”

After leaving the Flotilla, Zuri found herself unsure as to what to do. Too much time had passed since her pilgrimage that any of the contacts she had made on Omega would have forgotten her or end up turning her away. However, it was to her luck that while she wandered that she learned of an "Indentured Servant" service on Illium.

Through this, Zuri found herself contracted to Leneir, an elderly Hanar. The Hanar, in his younger days, had held unpopular opinions and, yet, managed to hold a great deal of influence in the Illuminated Primacy. However, his old age, Leneir desired to travel and go on his own pilgrimage to the various well know ruins of his Enkindlers. Knowing that there was a good chance that he might die of old age, as well as not wanting to force his Drell bodyguard to leave his home on Kahje, the Hanar released his old guard from his obligations.

As Zuri had stressed her experience as a marine, the broker who had her original contract had listed her as being available for "soldiering" work. While it had been done to placate her Quarian client, the broker found herself surprised when Leneir expressed his interest in a Quarian bodyguard over other "proper" bodyguard species. Regardless, he had the credits to afford it and was adamant enough that the broker couldn't convince him to buy the contract of a better suited (and more expensive) bodyguard.

HISTORY

Death of a Pirate Captain
”I never trusted them. Certainly, they treated me well enough, but I got suspicious when they started to get friendly. Then I hacked their extranet mail, and learned why… ”

It had not been Zuri's intention to deceive her pirate employers. Not at first, at any rate. The first time they had spoken to her using Batarian (and presuming that her translator would take care of it), she had been using one that had been rather old and in desperate need of repair. However, after a day or two, she had fixed it and was able to understand them fine.

The second time, Zuri had understood perfectly. Perhaps she wasn't entirely blameless, but... It wasn't her fault that they decided that not responding to something meant that she didn't understand it. The third time however, was when the Quarian realized that

The Varda’shain
“I never got the entire story as to how they got the ship. It had something to do with a bet, and then dealing with a ‘difficult clean up’. That was enough for me…”

Originally the Varda’shain, a Batarian frigate, belonged to a small gang of Batarian slavers. However, after their leader ended up gambling away a good sum of credits that he couldn’t pay, the Varda’shain was seized by its next owners after the slavers had been dealt with.

Soon after it was acquired by its next owners, a group of Batarian gangsters that had been exiled from Khar’shan, it was quickly put to use in pirate business. Unfortunately, up until Zuri joined the crew, the Varda’shain was poorly maintained. The gangsters didn’t know much about mechanics, and finding & paying people who did tended to cost almost as much as the frigate was worth. Certainly, the ship ran well enough and could usually get the job done, but there was always the risk that it might stop running at any point. If Zuri hadn’t been brought along, it’s likely that the poor frigate would have been abandoned and scrapped years ago.

Appearance-wise, the Varda’shain has started to show its age. It was far from being a "spring chicken" when it had first "liberated" it, and it was only through Zuri's careful attention that the inevitable signs of deterioration have only started to show up after almost a decade of use and abuse (rather than say... five years).

Its exterior is a dark brown, and appears to almost have a matte finish. There are a few sections where chunks of it had obviously fallen off and been welded back on. The inside isn't too different; the majority of the cabins have a lived in feeling. There are a few areas that have obviously not been in use for some time, and a number of places where even the emergency lighting has gone out. However, the entire interior of the ship doesn't always look as such. Certain areas (such as the engine room and the rather tiny hanger) are well taken care of and are impeccably clean.

It has also been noted that, in several small and remote areas, that the faint smell of rotting flesh remains. Despite several goings over, the source of the smell was never found, and through the passing of time, it barely remains. Unsurprisingly, those areas were rarely used and are among the filthier parts of the ship. Even with her obsessive desire for neatness, Zuri does not have the courage to try to find whatever it might have been and avoids those parts whenever she can.
