Not Respecting your Parents. Would it be a sin if they do not respect you? Or should I say one doesn't respect you?

Aspen 2010 Not Respecting your Parents. Would it be a sin if they do not respect you? Or should I say one doesn't respect you? I don't think there's anything in the Bible about parents respecting their children. There's stuff about stoning insubordinate children, though.

There is a passage about not being a jerk to your kids for sake of being a jerk. Quote: Colossians 3:21 (NASB) Fathers, do not exasperate your children, that they may not lose heart. Idea being that as a father I don't want my actions to be responsible for my child straying from God or being downhearted. However, them not respecting you doesn't relieve you of your duty to honor your mother and father. You still have to do what's right even if one of your parents decided to do wrong. I grew up in an atheistic household. At the time I moved out, I was the only one there who was Christian. There were a lot of things going on that were wrong. For example, if I went to church that evening, I wasn't allowed to eat when I got home. If I had acted disrespectfully, not honored my father in that, I would have lost all credible witness as a child. So, keep at it. Eventually you'll move out and you'll be on your own, but for the time being, remember that you have a Father in heaven. Ultimately, that's the father we need to aim to please.

Though I'm sure it's not what a priest would tell you, I think context matters a lot. I don't think the sentiment behind the commandment was such that you should, for example, tolerate abuse from your parents "to honor them." I think it's meant to be more at gratitude for your life, being thankful for parents that are good enough to raise and provide for you (even if you don't like all of how it's done,) and appreciating the limitations of parents that for whatever reason couldn't be good parents (as in not hating them for it.) I don't believe that the god of Abraham, who is omni-everything, benevolent, merciful, etc could have meant it otherwise, and I think that the belief that it was meant otherwise should be attributed to the cultures of the times and should not have a place in modern society. But that's me, and I'm not a Christian, so take it with a pound of salt.

i have heard that the "honor your parents" things was aimed at adults who wanted to put aside the burdens of cared for their elderly parents.
so, if you take care of older people, one day when you are older you will be cared for too, and your "days will be long in the land."

Well based on Jesus' statement "If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same."
I would say it doesn't matter whether or not they respect you. I mean, it does matter, but it shouldn't affect your treatment of them. That said, if your parents are abusing you or instructing you to do immoral things, you can stand up to them as much as is necessary, but even then you should do so as respectfully as possible.
That's how I would interpret the rule, anyway. I don't speak with any sort of aurthority on the matter.

My first response to this question would be No, you don't have to respect anyone who disrespects you. But I'm a Satanist. before i delve into this wholeheartedly I just need to ask: In what way do they not respect you?

It is a command from Allah to respect as quoted in the Quran: (Women: 4:1) " Have fear of the One whose Name you swear to settle your differences and have respect for your relatives." remem parents r relatives.... smile

Aspen 2010 I don't really know if its disrespect, but more like "denying my rights" (in a political term). Because if I try to defend my-self, I would get punished by, usually, them taking away my social life (my only way of talking to friends). And just to know, why do "Satanists" believe that Satin is the right path? I've never understood it? There are no real 'satanists', often times, Satan is really just a manifestation of rebellion personified into a single being to show the 'good' in God, or just be the one to represent humanity and ask all the questions a human would ask. If you look in the book of Job, Satan and God even have a friendly chat and a bet! Most satanists take this label to rebel against the ideas of teh church, much like protestants rebelled against the corruption of the Roman Catholic church (that was so bad every clergyman got his own brothel, which I am still pissed off about because when I was growing up as a roman catholic the S-E-X word was considered a curse word!) It's really just a way to promote being wild and taking power away from the church. It's mostly teens who dislike all the rules put on them that deny them of basic human instincts, and want to express freedom and free will. If you ever DO meet a satanist, don't expect them to be seriously praising satan or demons, its mostly just a show and they really are either atheists who hate church with a passion or rebellious teens looking for attention.
