Funklepuss No. Just no. I don't trust it. Actually, you're right. The only reason I hadn't posted yet was I was doing research on it... Some facts: Only thirty-two percent of their proceeds actually go into direct services. Most of it is spent on advertising, staff salaries, etc. They support the Ugandan army and even come to their defense against the accusations of rape and looting against citizens. They've even been photographed with Ugandan soldiers, holding military-grade weapons, despite saying they are advocates for peace. And we are not the only ones who don't trust them. This blog also has links to charities that are better than Invisible Children.

We have a shitload of funds about children that made soldiers. Kony 2012 is just another one to the list.

As far as I can tell, the only reason I don't support a lot of charities is either I don't like their financial management or their ethics. Invisible Children falls under both. I've noticed a lot of the, for a lack of better word, "mainstream" charities aren't as great as people say they are. I hate Autism Speaks and The Salvation Army with a passion for their ethics. Red Cross has annoyed me too.

AHMAHGAD This! I think the nature of the objectives a lot of people are adopting as a result are positive, but not necessarily informed. My personal beef with the entire Kony 2012 movement has to do with just how immediately people became so passionate with the cause- when they've neglected any other form of charity otherwise in their local communities. Living here in particular it just seems especially misplaced. Right. I'm sure the people who want to support/are supporting this charity, for the most part, are doing it for a good cause, but will blindly support things because they aren't informed. I for one don't want my money to go to advertising or to a charity that provides for a cause that is against my morals like homophobia or racism; I want it to go to the services it claims to provide, which is why I research the causes before I support it.
This is one of the reasons why I haven't really donated much in the first place. I gave some change years ago to a Salvation Army bell ringer at Christmas-time at a Walmart. I'm glad I didn't give much more; recently, I discovered they are founded by evangelical extremists that regularly advocate for homophobia and transphobia. I don't care about religion, but I won't accept hatred because of petty reasons like that. neutral
What's more, Kony hasn't been active in Uganda for a decade. Apparently he may be dead; five years ago, his health was taking a turn for the worse. And like you said, I think we should work on our own problems here in the US before we start helping other countries with things like this. Natural disasters? Fine, but don't get involved in internal affairs unless they ask for help. We have poor children here too, after all.

I read about that. Makes me wonder if the criticism is getting to his head. It doesn't mean that we should stop, though. By all means, we should continue so people don't waste their money on a poorly-run charity. gonk
