This is a PRP between Van (Kurama no Koishi) and Sara (BikiCakes).

Setting:
Sara finds Van after the captain has come within an inch of her life.

Van pressed her palm to her deltoid, ignoring the sharp pain that stemmed from the sudden pressure even as she watched the water in the sink slowly turn an unforgiving crimson from the blood that seeped through her fingers. The captain cursed under her breath, not turning around to survey the vast damage that had been done to the interior of the large ger that she and Bataar shared. Someone had tipped the Nobles off to the fact that she was returning tonight. It wasn’t the first attempt on her life since she’d been promoted, and even though Van was immediately able to tell something was amiss when she opened the door to the dark room, she’d still nearly gotten her head taken clean off.

That c**t, Van spat viciously at nothing in particular, hardly thankful that she’d only gotten away with an injured shoulder. She was still seeing red from the fact that someone had just tried to assassinate her. The fighter they’d sent had been a true b***h; even though she didn’t manage to kill her target, she was thoughtful enough to twist the knife as she pulled it out of Van’s shoulder. Granted, abuse and exploitation weren’t things the woman was unused to, being the only Legionnaire in an otherwise uniformly Noble neighborhood—she’d been assaulted by her own neighbors several times before, but it was obvious that they were taking her more seriously, now. It wasn’t good to have one of the captains heading the prison raids living among them, after all.

The captain laughed, not exactly a sane sound given how absolutely enraged she was. Tearing a panel of fabric off of her dress with her teeth (her clothes were ruined, anyway), it was all she could do to attempt to bandage her shoulder with one arm. There was no chance for emergency treatment at this hour, not when there wasn’t a friendly face in the entire neighborhood. Her only choice was to wait until the sun rose, before heading back toward the city to find a medic.

Cleaning was the last thing on her mind, and Van was only marginally aware of how murderous she looked right now, covered in blood and surrounded by the remains of her formerly well-decorated living room. Gritting her teeth, the Legionnaire leaned against the counter, trying to ignore the stabbing pain in her shoulder. It was going to be a long night.

Sara knew that something was wrong, she could feel it pulsing through her veins like a siren, shaking her very core.

The panic attacks started in the mountains and were getting more vicious as time passed. She sometimes found herself unable to breathe, curled up on the floor with tears flowing from her pale eyes - they said it was because of the increase in spiritual power that her body had to endure, that she would grow out of it when she had adjusted to her new abilities. Tonight started off the same as any other, though in her struggle to regain control she found herself calling out for Van. When her body finally calmed and her thoughts once again became clear she found herself staring at the ceiling. She could not get the thought of her friend from her mind, she was restless, unable to sleep, unable to think about anything else.

She decided that she had to see her, not in the morning but right now. Though that was harder than one might think. Her guards would not risk taking the Priestess into Noble territory, so Sara had to escape them. With help from her handmaiden Kairie she was able to sneak out the back, bare her long cape and set off on Kim. She rode quickly, not stopping until she came across the home that the two Captains shared. The whole journey seemed to pass in a flash and before she knew it she was dismounting her stead.

Sarangerel had not seen Bataar since she returned, no doubt he would think her crazy for charging into his home at such an hour, but she needed to put her mind to peace.

Though the sight in the room did not offer her the reassurance she so desperately craved.

"Van!" The Priestess approached the lavender woman, teal eyes reflecting the crimson liquid which had tainted so much in the area around her friend. Her mind was filled with so many questions, ones that could wait for now, her first thought was of Van's safety.

Sara did not underestimate the Captain, it was clear that she had handled herself and injuries like this were far from common in her line of work. Yet that did not ease her worry, right now she did not see the strong leader Van had become, she saw her friend bleeding and in need of help. She stopped just in front of her, resting her hand on the other woman's shoulder. This time her voice came in a softer tone. "Van, where are the people who did this? Are we in any immediate danger here?" There were no bodies which indicated that her attacker{s) ere still alive.

Van whirled around at the sound of the door bursting wide open, grasping for her sword with her good arm as she felt adrenaline surge through her body again. If there were more of them, she wouldn’t go down without a fight. Half blind with pain and rage, it took the captain a moment to realize that the person standing in front of her was not an enemy Noble out for her life, but her priestess friend, Sara. Scowling, Van tossed the blade to the side and turned back to the sink, where she’d been letting the blood drip from her bandages.

The Legionnaire was not in the most personable mood right now, even though Sara was certainly preferable company compared to any other Noble at the present moment. Her mind was still racing with scenarios of how this had happened so easily. Obviously the Nobles knew Bataar would be out right now, but how did they know she was returning tonight? Van flinched when Sara placed her hand on her shoulder, jerking her head uneasily toward the priestess. “Don’t worry, that b***h isn’t coming back,” she muttered darkly, thinking of how she’d snapped the fighter’s arm back, shattering the elbow joint.

It had taken all of her willpower not to finish the other woman off then and there—the sensible part of Van knew that committing a Noble murder in the middle of a Noble neighborhood meant that she had a death wish. If the neighbors wouldn’t get their hands dirty retaliating as soon as they heard the news, more nightly ambushes were definitely going to be in the cards. “What are you doing here, anyway? Shouldn’t you be back at the temple? Did you come alone?” Van tried to keep the edge out of her voice, but despite her efforts she still sounded testy. It was just like her to be more worried about the woman she called her little sister, even as she was bleeding profusely.

“It’s hardly safe here, as you can see.”

Sarangerel knew that Van was not in the most sociable mood, the sharpness in her voice suggested as much. Still it did not make Sarangerel back off, she knew the Captain's temper was not directed towards her, but the situation that the two young ladies found themselves in. Van seemed to almost spit venom as she talked about her attacker. Yet Sara remained calm, softly pushing her for information. "Who is not coming back? What happened here?" She asked, her eyes portraying the seriousness of the situation.

However they softened as Van perused the reason for her visit, it was clear to see the Priestess was confused herself, suddenly unfocused. "I... I do not know. I just knew I needed to be here. I knew something was wrong." She shrugged loosely, shaking her head in frustration, she knew how crazy that must sound. Regardless she brought her concentration back to the pressing matter of Van's injury, which was still bleeding substantially.

Now avoiding the first she focused on the second question that was asked of her. "I am, the guards would never escort me into this area, they would not understand, not believe me. Not everyone has the faith in me that you hold, some still think I am mad." If she had demanded them come out at such an hour because of a bad feeling they would have locked her in her room. The guards, unlike her servants and maids, did not take commands from her. They were there to protect her, to watch over her, always, every hour of the day. She sometimes felt like a prisoner, everywhere she went she needed to be escorted, the freedom she once possessed had been stolen from her, or at least that is how it felt. No doubt they would have already noticed her absence and were searching for her. She was going to get an earful when she returned, it almost wanted to make her hide here with Van forever, but she knew that could not be, she had a temple to run.

She knew could not run away from her responsibilities.

She gave her friend a light smile when she declared it was not safe, that much was obvious, but it was not like she had never been in a dangerous situation before. "We will worry about our safety later, first I need to check you over. Spirits help me Van, you are going to see me to an early grave." She sighed, gently pulling back the make-shift bandage to look at the wound, it was clear it would need stitches. The person who had inflicted it was not messing around - that was for sure. The Priestess grabbed and ripped a larger hole in Van's already ruined dress so the area around it was bare. The best she could do right now was make her friend comfortable and handle the situation like she would any in her clinic. Sarangerel suddenly went into healer mode, resistance was not an option.

"Do you have a needle and thread? Some cleansing solution would not go amiss either. I need to close the wound and wrap it before it has a chance to get infected." She grabbed Van's other hand and placed it ontop of the open cut so it at least had some pressure on it. She could see her friends already pale skin going whiter and knew she needed to work fast.

Van bit back a snarl as she thought of the events that had unfolded not too long before Sara had arrived. Usually, fights were not enough to anger her to this extent; she’d encountered her fair share of saucy and dishonorable opponents, but the fact that this one had been a woman sent by her brother set her over the edge. That, on top of the fact that she’d really just wanted to go home and sleep was what was fueling her anger right now. It wasn’t even that she had almost died—that happened to the captain all the time.

Swallowing, Van managed to control her temper for another minute. “Assassin,” she answered tersely, continuing to press on her injury with her free hand, “I... disabled her.” The captain decided not to go into the gory details of their fight, even if she would have enjoyed doing so. Her attention was drawn away from herself when Sara answered her question, noticing that she’d skirted giving a complete answer. Even so, it was important that her friend was safe. “You’re staying here until morning, then.” Her tone was commanding, absolute, not unlike the one she used with her fighters. She had enough blood on her hands, literally and figuratively, without adding the priestess’ to the mixture.

For the moment, it was safer to have her stay where Van could keep an eye on them, than let her return to the temple by herself. Van was more than willing to give the guards an earful if they gave the Mongol woman any trouble. Frowning at Sara’s chiding, the captain shook her head, though the motion made her dizzy. “I didn’t ask for you to come, you know,” she said, the humor in her comment appearing on her face in a wry smile, “It’s just a flesh wound. It’s not like you’re going to die before me, anyway.” She’d already resigned herself to a premature death, as was common in those who fought in the war effort. Especially now that she had assassins sent after her on a regular basis, there wasn’t much hope for longevity.

“Needle and thread are... in my drawer.” The captain nodded in the direction of her sleeping area, which had been relatively undisturbed compared to the common area of the ger. “Vodka, in the cabinet.” Now that the subject of conversation had been brought back to her wound, she couldn’t take her mind off the pain, and her vision spotted before her eyes.

Assassin? They were sending assassins after her now!

Sara tried to keep the displeasure from her face, but found it difficult to say the least. Her mouth was a solid line, and every muscle in her body tensed. Van too? Did all her friends have targets on their backs? She shook her head in disbelief, this is what came with promotion. The priestess sighed, making a mental note to pray extra hard for her sister's safety.

The Mongolian girl smiled at her friends order request. She did not have to be told twice, and she found herself reminiscing on happier times. "The last time we had a sleepover was the night we met. When normal girls do this they have a cheeky drink, talk about their love lives, share some gossip and play card games in very pretty nightgowns. What it must be like not to have a care in the world." Not them though, they stitched up wounds and got lost in dark, scary jungles. Oh well, there was never a dull moment. "I supose we could play cards later, the lack of blood to your brain might give me the upper hand for a change. She joked, trying to keep the mood as light as she could, in the hope it would make her friend feel better. Her eyes might have reflected worry, but she tried her hardest to hide it. Van was in distress, and Sara was trying her hardest to pull her out whatever dark place her mind was in.

To distract it from the obvious pain she was in. It broke her heart to see her like this.

"Of course not, but you are secretly glad I am here." She stated, pouting at Van's comment about death. She would not be too sure about that, especially if anyone of importance found out about her and a certain Noble Captain.... or if Odval had her way. "Wonderful. Though if that is the case be prepared for me to summon you back, even death will not keep me away from you, my beautiful Van." She leaned in and kissed the girl on the cheek, before sticking out her tongue in a playful manor. That was the Van she knew and loved, always the optimist.

She nodded her head and stood up, heading to collect the items that she needed. "I knew I could count on you." She hummed, picking up the vodka bottle and pulling out the cork. She poured a drop on the back of her hand and licked it to check its strength, a visible shiver running up her spine as she did so. "You will die before me if you drink this stuff. It tastes lethal." She pouted, her face scrunching up to show her disgust. Horrible stuff.

She walked back over to her friend and knelled by her side, the light tone in her voice vanishing to become more serious. Van might protest that this was just a flesh wound, but she was not taking any chances with her friends valuable life. "Now, this is going to sting, but we both know you are tough enough to deal with it. She gave the girl warning, before pouring the liquid on the wound to flush it out.

It was all Van could to do focus her eyes on the priestess standing in front of her right now. She wouldn’t admit it, but Sara had come not a moment too soon, because the pain and the blood loss was really starting to catch up to her now. The pain felt like it was going to cleave her shoulder in two, and the burning white spots were expanding in her vision as she fought to keep her eyes open. Fumbling for a chair, Van let her legs give out, plopping herself down in a rather unceremonious fashion. Another minute and she probably would have passed out.

She tried to curve her lips up in a smile at Sara’s words, knowing that her friend was only trying to distract her mind, but the expression turned out to be more of a grimace. “We could,” she agreed, trying her best to keep up with Sara’s light tone yet falling fairly short, “I could get you cards and a nightgown but I’m afraid you’re holding the only drink in this ger right now.”

There was amusement in her eyes, even if the rest of her face didn’t show it, when Sara leaned in to plant a quick kiss on her cheek. Under any other circumstances she would have commented that even in soul form, she’d do everything in her ability to make sure Sara was safe, but at the moment such a declaration was beyond her. Words, at this point, were almost beyond her. Van was certain that the priestess already knew how much she loved her, anyway.

“It takes the edge off,” was all she could manage in response to Sara’s next words. The captain didn’t expect her to entirely understand. Sometimes drink was the only thing separating her from plummeting right over the edge of her sanity. Other times, it was an easy and cheap anesthetic. Unfortunately, the clear contents of the bottle were about to be thrown right into her shoulder. Van made no sound, only jerking slightly at the sudden sting of alcohol on open flesh.

“Couldn’t have hurt to give me some of that before you did that, you know.”

"You must be stressed. Never thought I would see you running low on the poison." Sara blinked. Something was off with Van. Something that she could not put her finger on, it might be the loss of blood, or the stress of battle. However, that never bothered the Captain before. Note to self, do some snooping when Van did not look like she was about to die. If something was wrong, she wanted to know, and hoped that Van would have told her anyway. Maybe she was overthinking things. Her friend would not be hiding anything. Right?

Sara could not help but laugh at her friends comment. "Oh hush." She rolled her eyes and then went about putting the needle over a nearby candle to make sure it was clean and safe to use. The thread went in with ease, talent, pure talent. She used to be terrible at treading needles, now all of her fingers had grown thick layers of skin at the ends; to prevent her from bleeding every time she did as much as look at one of the horrid things. "Well. If my career choice fails and I become a mere mortal with no unearthly powers to keep me interesting. At least I will make an excellent sempstress. I will dress you up in pretty things all day long."

She nodded her head, and then pushed the needle into her friends skin. Working as quickly, but as precisely as she could. "You seem tired Van. Maybe you should lay down. I do not want you getting bags ontop of your crows feet and stress lines. Oh Captain-hood. What one must sacrifice." She mused, the girl looked like she was going to pass out, she was pale. Paler than usual and that was pretty damn pale.

Pale enough to make the Priestess worry. She had seen corpses with more colour.

Van said nothing at the mention of stress, only managing to nod once, a gesture that looked more like she was about to lose consciousness. She was indeed experiencing a lot of anxiety these days, but not more than usual. Even the attempt on her life was, in reality, just a day in the life. What was bothering her the most now was the fact that the hit had come from her very own brother, and someone she’d spent years of her life trying to win back. She needed more time to think about that, though—hopefully sometime when she wasn’t in danger of bleeding out.

“I’d like that,” Van admitted when Sara practically sang of dress-up time for the two of them. It wasn’t as if the other woman had any important responsibilities right now or useful skills that would be better than dress—wait a minute, what was she thinking? The captain frowned. “Nope, you have to be a priestess or else I would be dead right now.”

Something was a bit off about the manner in which she spoke; her reactions were a bit delayed, and her speech slurred a bit. It probably hadn’t been the wisest decision to pour alcohol directly into her bloodstream. Van placed her free hand on her face, allowing herself to rest her head a bit as she placed her elbow on the table.

“Wait, I have crow’s feet?” She tried to raise her head again, but failing. Instead, she just swiveled her head in her hand and raised her gaze to meet Sara’s. “Seriously?!” It was typical of her to be worried about stress lines, of all things, as she was bleeding half to death. She’d spent so much time and money trying to prevent them, after all! But the anxiety quickly left her as, finally, she slumped forward onto the table, fast asleep.
