Appearance
Slender and a touch frail in appearance he shows good breeding despite of his, at times, less than favorable living conditions. Pale green eyes and dark hair that he keeps swept back from his face. A youthful face and a normally serious expression that relaxes most when he's at his work.
He wears well cut but certainly not flashy or truly fashionable clothing.
Personality
He enjoys that his work allows him to drift from social engagement to social engagement without ever truly being locked into place. He finds it helps keep him from having to answer questions about his life or history beyond where he has studied or whom he has painted for.
He enjoys reading when he can, so often in fact that he has more or less memorized large sections of the few books he does possess. He keeps a small collection of penny-books and other small publications locked in a small chest and away from prying eyes lest they find he owns and has saved a handful of penny dreadfuls.
A bachelor with no real prospects for marriage it's unlikely that he will settle any time soon as he seems to be making little effort to court with his meager salary. Some speculate that he falls too quickly in and out of love, finding love in his paintings and briefly for the subjects of his paintings before moving on.
Skills
A good artist, able to imitate with skill some of the true masters though the best 'life' shown in his paintings seems to be in the eyes he paints more than the faces.
He's susceptible at times to social pressure finding himself at times in situations where he is clearly uncomfortable in some effort to fit in better despite a shy and retiring nature.
History
He has family elsewhere it seems, in that he receives a small stipend to help him maintain his lodgings and a meager living even when he is between actual commissions for paintings. However he declines to speak of them in any great depth or detail. He has a photo of a young woman who appears to be his sister, though it's an older photo and has suffered smoke damage.
His sister died in a fire when they were 15, the fire was set by his mother who suffered mercury poisoning and now is committed to an asylum. Gabriel himself hides burns of his own under long shifts and jackets. His father supplies the small stipend for 'personal reasons'

The guardian: Seeks stability in life rather than the fleeting relationships Gabriel tends to engage in if they can even be called that. A confidant creature who wants to build a home rather than letting Gabriel cling to the ability to retreat from everyone and everything at will.
