"You must be cheating."
"I am not."
"You have to be."
"You're paranoid."
"I don't get paranoid."
There was a snorting of laughter, followed by a small slap. Chuntao had laid her cards down on the glossy, cherry wood table in front of them with a satisfied look on her heart shaped face. Of all of the Qián daughters, she was by far the most beautiful, with silky black hair that framed large blue eyes and pale lavender scales - though Ehuang never made the distinction, and reminded all of her daughters of just how beautiful they were. However, Chuntao, with her grace and elegance and flocks of suitors, had never let it go to her head - a fact the entire family appreciated greatly.
Jianyu, reclining back in his seat, eyed the cards rather suspiciously.
"Why is it that you have beat me handily three times in a row?" he said in mock irritation, and tossed his own cards down - cards that were significantly less than the ones his younger sister had showed. Her eyes flickered up towards him, a smile tugging at the corners of red lips as though she were fighting back the very strong urge to laugh.
"Because you're just terrible at play cards," said Chuntao, and covered her mouth, the laughter spilling out after all.
With a rueful sort of sigh, Jianyu collected the cards up again, giving his sister a pointed look as he shuffled them through scaled fingers. "And here I thought I was doing so well. However it seems that my skills are somewhat...lacking in this area..."
Tossing back her black hair, Chuntao leaned forward, crossing one leg over the other and resting her chin in her hand, elbow pressed against her knee as she surveyed him beneath thick dark lashes. "I think you think too hard," she told him with a grin. "You're too busy trying to win, and therefore...you don't."
There was a small pause. Then she added, with a cheeky little smile "Or you're just terrible."
He threw one of the cards at her. "That is not it."
Still laughing, Chuntao ducked, picking up the card and twirling it between her fingers. "Shinzo is much better than you are."
"And how is our dear cousin?" Jianyu asked as she shifted the cards around. It had been a very long time since he had come home for an extended visit (the last time had not been very long, enough for Jianyu to show them the changes in his body and life as a result of the magic collision), but now he had decided to make - at the very least - to return once a week, especially now that Shinzo was entirely moved in. Yue was perfectly all right with this arrangement, and most of the time would probably accompany him, but this time she was spending the day on Main Street, and Jianyu had decided to pay a visit to his family. He did miss them rather dearly.
"Why don't you ask him yourself?" replied Chuntao with a smile. "He's around somewhere."
Jianyu glanced down at the cards, debating internally.
"One more round."

Having finalized his move into his uncles' home had been taxing, if only because Shinzo had come to realize he actually owned much more stuff than he'd ever realized he did. Most of it of... questionable value, given the fact he'd unpacked small trinkets that were probably better suited to small children but were kept for their sentimental value. Alas, most of the work had been done (save a box or two which he'd left inside a closet in his room for later down the week) and he'd mostly accommodated himself to the new house. New people, new room, new bed, new everything; it'd been exhausting for the young man, whom was barely used to going outside of what he considered familiar.
He was still technically not done exploring the whole house, which he'd found was much bigger than he remembered from earlier excursions to it during his childhood. Then again he hadn't really been able to explore the house back then and had thus, a wrong impression of how big it really was. He'd been putting off the exploring due to settling down into his academic life; given his stubbornness and his habit of seeking challenges, he'd taken to books, scrolls and the like with fierce determination. He was, in fact, doing just that when his ears picked up the unmistakable sound of his name, dragging him effectively out of lala land.
His head lifted from the scroll he'd been reading as he padded his way towards the kitchen (having decided only now after a couple of hours of tummy rumbling, that he was horribly hungry). Slowing down his pace to a complete halt, Shinzo turned, finally having determined the sound came from somewhere to his right, "You called?" the voice was drawled softly at the two players as he approached them, his robes long and almost dragging across the floor as he placed himself behind Jianyu. He was well aware they hadn't really called him, but it was a sort of easy way to greet him and a way to explain his approach. He figured his cousins knew him well enough to know that.
The scroll he was carrying was lowered considerably as he took in the table and the cards that were being played, his attention having been effectively refocused. He spoke only after several minutes of silent watching, "I would not play that card right now if I were you," his tone was soft spoken but considerably bored as he addressed his older cousin, almost as if he were addressing a rather daft child, "I believe our dear Chuntao will draw a queen of swords in a couple of turns, and given the fact she already has a king of swords... you playing that card is going to yield disastrous results for you."

"Are you entirely certain you're not cheating?"
"We are not starting this again."
The laugh that escaped Jianyu's throat was a lighthearted, teasing one as he rifled through the small stack of cards he held in his scaley hands. Eyebrows drawn together, a look of great concentration on his face, he did not even hear the footsteps as they padded into the room, nor did he hear the voice of his cousin as he peered over his shoulder. Chuntao gave the boy a smile and a nod, a twitch of her lips suggesting that she was amused by the fact that her brother had yet to notice, and lowered her gaze, shuffling through her cards.
"There," said Jianyu triumphantly, slapping down a card. Chuntao eyed it. Then laughed, covering her hand.
"Nope."
He glared at her, then looked down at his cards again - and it was then that Shinzo's voice finally broke into his inner musings, loud and clear and...talking about what he was supposed to be playing.
Jianyu lifted his eyes, catching sight of the figure hovering over his shoulder.
"Good afternoon to you too, cousin," he said, with a raised brow, but his expression shifted again, turning into a musing, bemused one as he glanced down at his cards again. He had no idea whether or not Shinzo was actually right, but he had not even known the other knew how to even play, let alone play well.
"...since when did you play?" said Jianyu, with a tilt of his head as he slipped out a different card than his original. "Did we ever play as children?"

Shinzo watched calmly as Jianyu lifted his gaze to meet his, offering the other make merely an arched brow for all response. Then, just as calmly, he slipped his hands into his sleeves and watched both his cousins play the game, "No," he said, "No I did not. But it was a puzzle, so I became intrigued. Turns out it is not as difficult as people make it out to be; it's all purely mathematical," he motioned towards the cards on the table, then slipped one hand out of his sleeves, picking out one of the cards in Jianyu's hands, "Play this one," he motioned to a spot on the table, "Over there, under that ten."
That said, he once more slipped his hands into his sleeves and was content to watch. There was silence for a while, and then a slow smirk that grew across the black haired youth's features, "She is, by the way, not cheating. you are just quite bad at this game. You play with your instincts, when you should be playing with your brain. This is not a fight, and not a hunt. It is all pure maths, which I don't recall you ever being really good at," a pause, "Has that changed or improved any at all?" then, almost as if just to be obnoxious, he motioned towards the card Jianyu was about to draw, "That card will be a queen of swords," there was technically, only about seventy per cent chance he'd be right, but then again, probability was on his side and he wanted to tease his cousin, so he figured he'd go with it.
It was, after all, quite amusing to see Jianyu squirm, and this was one of few ways he'd seen anyone manage it. He understood why Chuntao often played with him now; it was just quite interesting to see the other male looking so frustrated over something that wasn't meant to be taken so seriously, "I don't understand the appeal of this anyhow. Once I figured it out, it stopped being quite the challenge I figured it would be," but then again, while Chuntao did not cheat while she played... Shinzo did, albeit unknowingly. He did not know that what he did was essentially cheating. How would he? Besides, he had quite a good poker face to boot.

It had been so long since he had last seen Shinzo that Jianyu had quite forgotten what his cousin even looked like. Now, as he tilted his head back to slant a gaze towards him, he took in the dark hair, longer than he remembered, and casually tied with a length of string - dark red fins, studded with silver rings, and a very calm, stoic expression. If nothing else, Jianyu did recall the seriousness - Shinzo had always been a very quiet, demure child.
He looked back at his cards, idly tapping a finger against the back of one. "I never really thought of it as a puzzle before," he said, and crossed one leg over the other, leaning back in his chair and shuffling the cards around a bit more. Playing these games was something that he had done all through his Academy school years, but it had been so long since he had gambled that he did not remember the rules of it. He did, however, remember that it shouldn't take more than a few simple observations and reasonable deduction skills to determine how to win a game.
He let Shinzo slip a card free, and Jianyu eyed it a bit warily. His gaze flickered towards the table, and then, with a small shrug, set it down.
Chuntao lifted a brow, but said nothing, only smiled benignly and played her next card. This went on for several more moments, silence filling the room, until -
"She is, by the way, not cheating. you are just quite bad at this game. You play with your instincts, when you should be playing with your brain. This is not a fight, and not a hunt. It is all pure maths, which I don't recall you ever being really good at."
Jianyu nearly dropped his cards. Chuntao gave a snort, which was hastily turned into a suspicious sounding cough, turning her face away and covering her mouth with her hand.
"Just because I wasn't good at math," said Jianyu, with as much dignity as he could muster under the circumstances - which wasn't very much, but it didn't hurt to try. "doesn't mean that I am terrible at card games and puzzles. I happen to be very good at this game, thank you very much."
And, as if to prove this, he slapped down a card decisively on the table. This was followed by another snort of barely concealed laughter as Chuntao threw down her card - a sword.
"I win," she said, eyes dancing, and Jianyu threw up his hands, the cards flying everywhere. This apparently gave his sister the go ahead, since she stopped trying to hide the fact that she was amused and began laughing outright, snorting and coughing.
Jianyu turned to look suspiciously at Shinzo, as if to say this is all your fault.
"Okay, maybe it's not quite as easy as I thought."
