Liu's eyes were trained upon the ground as he moved from side to side within the clearing, going through a series of incredibly complex movements that would've normally left him flailing but seemed somewhat...natural to him now. There was always a certain magic in the air of early morning, something that changed his movements from clumsiness into an air of actual elegance. He flicked the fan in his hand to the right, watching in satisfaction as the cloth from the fan danced out and followed him as he moved right in a series of twists and turns.

Chinese fan dancing was a precise art, filled with flicking movements and absolutely sure steps. The steadiness of it was soothing in any occasion to Liu, and sometimes he would just retreat to his little corner of the world to practice his art – it wasn't the only type of dance he knew, but others were more than irritating to him and he certainly didn't have the skill level to actually do them without a certain level of frustration.

Another kick to his right... and dear god ouch. Liu shrieked as he tripped over a rock, his hands immediately going to protect his face and body curling as he landed. His cerulean layered fan sat at his right. Alright, so not all the clumsiness was gone. The white-haired boy stood up gingerly, his eyes flickering around him in pain, staring at the criminal rock that had caused all the problems. "Bad rock." Liu pointed his finger at it, frowning. "That was very mean."

one, two, three, one two three...

When Van found herself in the forest, it was more often than not to train, and this afternoon was no different. The fighter pulled out of her latest series of leopard-style movements, breathing deeply to steady her breath as she recovered. It was no different from any other training day in the forest; everything was quiet, tranquil, giving her ease of focus. She had certain things to attend to tonight, however, and so these finishing moves would be her last for the day. Pulling her pack onto her back and slinging a towel over her shoulder, she headed back in the direction of home.

Her movement was easy, due in part to the fact that she was wearing a stripped-down version of her usual garb, favoring a simple but chic set of workout clothes. A flash of flying fabric in the next clearing caught her eye, but the woman waved it off. After all, it wasn’t uncommon to run into others who were also training, here.

Except that this boy didn’t seem to be training, but rather, dancing...? Van’s footsteps paused as she looked on through the trees with curiosity. She supposed that it wasn’t weird, just perhaps a bit unusual. The sudden shriek followed by a thump caused her attention to return to the clearing, where she saw that the Lunarian just ahead had tripped and fallen. Hiding a smile as the boy scrambled to his feet, cursing the rock that had caused his literal downfall, Van stepped into view.

“Are you alright?” she called, her voice carrying neatly to the edges of the clearing. The high ponytail on her head swayed in rhythm with her footsteps as she approached the fair-haired boy, and upon closer look she could tell that he was probably a bit younger than her. The corners of her amethyst eyes crinkling as she watched him, it was impossible to tell whether she was laughing at him or whether she was genuinely concerned.

Liu silently chastised the evil rock, his gaze almost sullen as he took it in his hands and threw it as far away as possible (which wasn't very far, but the effort was what counted. right? right?). Then he crossed his arms and tapped his feet in a somewhat teenaged fashion and thought about what to do next. He couldn't go back to dancing; there was a certain spirit and tone to the actual art, and once one was interrupted, it was fairly hard to go back to that. Liu didn't want to return home either – his mother was in one of her sessions with the conduit shaman who'd come to visit them, and though he wanted her to succeed and become better, Liu would be blasted if he was required to see his mother so vulnerable. Jing Mei was the only constant in his life.

He was so deep into his thinking that he almost missed the silent steps behind him; whirling backwards in the starting moments as the woman talked didn't count. Liu cursed at himself silently. His grandfather would've been disappointed – one of the first things the old man had taught Liu was to recognize the steps of an enemy. Or to, well, recognize anyone's steps at all.

The girl – no, woman – in front of him was very beautiful, with a sheet of ebony hair that tumbled over her shoulders in a high ponytail, and generous proportions, as well as a semi-serious look on her face, but ––– oh great. She was probably laughing at him. Liu felt the tiniest of red creep up his neck, almost embarrassed. She was probably training, and doing a much better job of it than Liu had been. Effortlessly competent, deadly, all the things that Liu just really wanted out of life; instead he was just sort of strange, good at cooking of all things, and probably making his grandfather roll in his grave. Liu sighed and scrunched his nose up, just watching the girl out of the corner of his eye. "Just my ankle, but it's alright, thanks." He said shortly, waving at the foot almost dismissively, as if this sort of thing happened everyday (which it did). "It was the rock's fault!" He added, venomously, sticking his tongue out in an almost pout.

"So. What were you doing around here!" Liu asked, nodding his head in her direction, because he really wasn't in the mood for awkward conversations and the only way to solve those was to talk. Which he was doing. Very successfully. Yes.

Van looked on in mild interest, raising her eyebrows slightly as the boy continued cursing the rock as if it were the cause of all of his problems. He hadn’t seemed to notice her, even when he’d picked up the offending stone and had thrown it some small distance away. The woman’s eyes briefly followed the trajectory of the throw, seeming a bit unimpressed when the thing had landed on the ground as she returned her gaze to the boy standing in front of her... to find that he had finally noticed her. Her face broke into a brief smile, one that was decidedly catlike. “Hello.”

In the fleeting silence that followed, Van tilted her head a bit as she fixed her gaze upon him, hardly noticing the faint blush that had displayed itself across the boy’s exposed collarbone. It was no reaction that she was unused to, after all.

When he made a face and turned away from her, waving his small accident off and blaming the rock once again, Van was moved to make that mysterious smile with her eyes one more time. Now, though, it was more apparent that mirth was the driving emotion behind the expression. “I’m sure,” was the smooth reply—Van was a nice enough person; she wouldn’t question the boy or the rock if it made him feel better about himself! Seeming unaffected by the younger Lunarian’s rather unwelcoming expression, she continued, “Well, I was on my way back from the training grounds when I heard you here. I was just making sure you were alright.”

It was not entirely a lie, though it was less her concern that drove her here than it was pure curiosity. Most people were fine after falling down once or twice—it just didn’t hurt to seem like a caring citizen, and in this case, it had given Van an excuse to approach the boy. Looking around now, she saw nothing to indicate that he had been training, at least not in the sense that she had been. Her eyes fell upon the fan that now lay several feet away, noting that it was just a regular decorative fan, concealing no blades. It was not a weapon. “Pardon my question, but...” she said finally, blinking as her eyes met his light gaze, “were you dancing?”

Liu looked at the girl with a head cocked sideways, his eyes following her moves unashamedly. She was pretty, if you liked that sort of thing – dark-haired and sexy, if that was the word you could use and um. Yeah. He was an awkward boy, he didn't talk about these sort of things. Now that the initial shock of seeing a pretty girl talk to him was over, Liu loosened up easy enough, slipping back into his bad posture and giant smiles.

"Uh, that's nice of you!" Liu nodded a little jerkily, smiling wide and being generally awkward, as usual.

He was caught completely off guard by the question of his dancing – it wasn't something he really discussed about with, well, anyone. It wasn't the most admirable activity in the world for a man, especially not when his grandfather had taught him to be a protector or something of that sort for his mother. He had, instead, gone for the cooking or dancing or being generally girly direction. Anyways. Well, if she was going to ask him this, he wasn't going to lie. It was nice that someone was interested, though Liu couldn't tell for the life of him whether or not her question was in a positive or negative light. Talk about stoic. "Yeah. I was dancing, until that rock came along."

"Jing Liu, by the way!" He held out a hand happily enough. "Nice to meet you."

Van measured the other Lunarian’s reaction curiously, amusement dancing behind her violet eyes as she watched him watch her. He seemed a typical teenage boy, if nothing else, and she wondered now whether he was attending the Academy or whether he was one of those rich spoiled brats who’d never be called upon to fight. Most students would have been training out here, after all, but this one was dancing instead. She wouldn’t begrudge him his hobbies, of course, but perhaps she’d inquire about it further, later.

The fighter smiled naturally in response to his, and she took his hand in a firm handshake when he offered it. “Au Tuyet Van,” the woman stated fluidly, giving her full name in response to his. “Most people simply call me Van. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance.” She couldn’t say why she was being so formal to someone who didn’t seem to be too concerned about pretty words and appearances, but it was always a good impression to make.

Allowing herself a chuckle, Van looked downward at the mention of the rock. “I’m sure there’ll be bigger obstacles than just that rock, one day,” she said honestly, a small smile creeping across her pale face. Then, a thought occurred to her, and she raised her gaze again. “Perhaps you could show me how to dance, one day?” It wasn’t an unreasonable request, not in her eyes, though she had no idea of knowing whether she herself was serious about it. Being too committed to a hobby wasn’t possible for her the way her schedule was now, but the skill and footwork would do nothing but aid her in her study of martial arts, particularly in the circle walking movements that comprised baguazhang. Van waited for his response.
